Prevenient Grace

Thursday, May 22, 2014
I have been sustained by you ever since I was born; from my mother's womb you have been my strength; my praise shall be always of you.  Psalms 71:6
This morning’s news carried the story of a 15 year old High Point youth, Marcus Thomas.[1]  Marcus had a rough start in life; both of his parents are in prison and the great-grandparents who were raising him died.  He was angry and confused; he got into drugs and was headed for disaster.
Then a community intervention program (Eckerd) changed his attitude and his life.  Marcus now operates his own lawn care service.  Governor McCrory’s office heard about the teen’s turnaround and has taken an interest in both Marcus and the program.
I love success stories.
Here’s another one that may explain the first one; it’s called prevenient grace.  "Prevenient" means going before.  It is God’s grace that watches over our pathway through life and draws us towards God.
The Psalmist understood that from cradle to grave God is our strength.  When we wander from God’s way we grow weaker.  If you watch the video accompanying the story, you will hear Marcus telling you, with the conviction only experience can produce, that the road away from God’s strength – in his case hard drugs – just isn’t worth it!  What a wise 15 year old!
Today…for you
Is your pathway leading towards God?
