O Lord, what are human beings that you should notice them,
mere mortals that you should think about them?
For they are like a breath of air;
their days are like a passing shadow. Psalm 144:3-4(NLT)
mere mortals that you should think about them?
For they are like a breath of air;
their days are like a passing shadow. Psalm 144:3-4(NLT)
Did you ever wake up to one of those
mornings?
Of course you have!
Today was one of mine.
Having just passed a birthday…one that’s getting disturbingly close to
the dreaded “0” ones (40,50,60,70!!!!)…I find myself taking note of the little
changes that occur. You look a little
closer at that strange person in the mirror.
You wonder, my, my…where did I go?
I’ve got to admit, that last sentence was influenced
greatly by a line from a very funny movie, As Good As It Gets.[ii]
One of the central characters,
Simon Bishop (played by Greg Kinnear) has been beaten up by robbers. He is in the hospital and asks his assistant
for a mirror. As he sees his battered,
swollen, stitched-up face for the first time after the nightmarish attack, he
utters the line, where did I go?
That is the kind of moment in life when Psalm 144
shows up; you check the reality of mortality.
You wonder about a number of things:
· You wonder where the years have gone
· You wonder how many are left
· You think a lot about the meaning of
life
and where you fit it…or don’t.
It can get pretty rough from there (especially in my
mirror at 5 in the morning!).
But you need to press on through the Psalms, because
there’s a corner to be turned with just the next breath:
The Lord is merciful and compassionate,
slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love.
The Lord is good to everyone.
He showers compassion on all his creation.
All of your works will thank you, Lord,
and your faithful followers will praise you.
They will speak of the glory of your kingdom;
they will give examples of your power.
They will tell about your mighty deeds
and about the majesty and glory of your reign.
For your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom.
You rule throughout all generations.
slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love.
The Lord is good to everyone.
He showers compassion on all his creation.
All of your works will thank you, Lord,
and your faithful followers will praise you.
They will speak of the glory of your kingdom;
they will give examples of your power.
They will tell about your mighty deeds
and about the majesty and glory of your reign.
For your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom.
You rule throughout all generations.
The Lord always keeps his promises;
he is gracious in all he does.
he is gracious in all he does.
Psalm 145:8-13(NLT)
The Lord is gracious in ALL He does!
For You Today
When you have one of those mornings,
don’t forget to press-on past Psalm 144; that next one is manna to the soul!
