Lord, through all the generations you have been our home! Before the mountains were born, before you gave birth to the earth and the world, from beginning to end, you are God. Psalm 90:1-2(NLT)
That something or someone could be
eternal has always fascinated me. With
our finite
minds it’s really hard to get your mind around infinity – no
beginning or ending. When I was very young,
I thought my parents were eternal; they had always been there. Then I saw their baby pictures.
There are no baby pictures of God,
only HIs tracks, eternal, infinite, unfathomable prints of His handiwork. You can see some finite results of God’s
hand, planets, stars, worms and mountains.
These tell of God’s majesty, authority, power, and very existence, but
who can measure the number of His days? The
Psalmist[2]
didn’t even try; all he managed was you ARE God!
I pray with Moses every day: Lord, YOU are God…and I am NOT!

This prayer puts me in the mouse’s
position.
The old story has an elephant
and mouse as dearest friends. The mouse
rarely had to walk anywhere, because his place was sitting up on the elephant’s
forehead, and his job, because both mice and elephants have notoriously bad
eyesight, was to help scan the horizon for food, resting places, and possible
dangers. One day the elephant and rider
crossed a rickety old wooden bridge.
When they got to the other side the bridge was rocking and swaying from
the stress of being elephant-walked. The
mouse declared: Wow…WE sure rocked that
old bridge.
Said the elephant: Oh…hello, old friend; I’d forgotten you were
up there!
And, from our perspective, riding
on God’s planet, with things rocking and rolling, mountains falling, floods
overwhelming, and life leading to death, we are like mice who live a couple of
years, wondering why the elephant (who typically lives 60-70 years) never seems
to get older.
And yet, despite the size, power,
and eternality of The Almighty, He has declared His friendship with us. Jesus was teaching God’s human mouse-creatures
(his disciples) just how much his love for us is as immeasurable as his age:
“What is the price of five sparrows—two copper coins? Yet God does not forget a single one of them. And the very hairs on your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows. Luke 12:6-7(NLT)
For You Today
If it hurts your head to think of eternity (and it certainly ought
to), rest all of who you are, and your fragile, temporary mortality, high-up on
God’s place, especially when you cross those uncertain bridges. There’s no better place to see clearly what
eternity is all about, than when God rocks one of those rough places.
