Evil Growing Stronger

Friday, November 10, 2023

Then the sixth angel blew his trumpet, and I heard a voice speaking from the four horns of the gold altar that stands in the presence of God.  And the voice said to the sixth angel who held the trumpet, “Release the four angels who are bound at the great Euphrates River.”  Then the four angels who had been prepared for this hour and day and month and year were turned loose to kill one-third of all the people on earth.  I heard the size of their army, which was 200 million mounted troops.  And in my vision, I saw the horses and the riders sitting on them.  The riders wore armor that was fiery red and dark blue and yellow.  The horses had heads like lions, and fire and smoke and burning sulfur billowed from their mouths.  One-third of all the people on earth were killed by these three plagues—by the fire and smoke and burning sulfur that came from the mouths of the horses.  Their power was in their mouths and in their tails.  For their tails had heads like snakes, with the power to injure people.  But the people who did not die in these plagues still refused to repent of their evil deeds and turn to God. They continued to worship demons and idols made of gold, silver, bronze, stone, and wood—idols that can neither see nor hear nor walk!  And they did not repent of their murders or their witchcraft or their sexual immorality or their thefts.  Revelation 9:13-21

According to Genesis 12, the Euphrates is a natural border of Israel.  The reason God’s judgment is focused on this area is because it is the place of beginnings for evil in the world.  Those evils included the first sin, first murder, and first recorded idolatry, when Nimrod built the infamous Tower of Babel.  God may take His time in bringing judgment, but He always brings it about properly at the right time!  All the different kinds of evil in this world are staggering to the average person.  We wonder how God can sort it all out – especially if we have felt its sting.

When I was serving as pastor in Gainesville, Florida, there was an assault on our church buildings one night.  Fortunately no one was there, but the "gang" left the place, including my study, in shambles.  There were satanic symbols painted on the walls, and broken stuff everywhere.  The Chief of Detectives of the Gainesville Police was a member of our church, and he assured me it was the same as some other Satan-worshipping rituals he'd seen.

How deep does evil run?  An Associated Press release in 1990 reported that …in Medellin, Columbia, the home base for the billionaire drug barons of Columbia, their most vicious weapons are sicarios, hired assassins who, with shotguns, pistols and icepicks, have killed presidential candidates and judges, a newspaper publisher, an attorney general, assorted army personnel and at least forty police officials. These sicarios are recruited children, as young as six and trained to be professional killers by fourteen.[1]  It takes demonic inspiration to bring children to this depth of evil.  We are not yet in that time (the Great Tribulation) yet we see the seed being planted, and growing each year.

If you are a normal human being, you ask:  Why all this evil?  The answer falls under the general heading of the judgment of God, but the reason of Satan’s brutality will be to amass an army large and mean enough to kill one-third of the world's population…and his ultimate end will be to gain control, to rule the entire earth.  His front man for this is called the Beast elsewhere in Scripture.  The world is being conditioned at this very point to accept the ways Satan's henchman operates.  Evil is growing stronger in this world.  Human minds, under the inspiration and direct manipulation by the Enemy, are up for grabs.  Technology, combined with economy, is influencing the minds of tomorrow's world leaders.  Consider MTV a micro-cosmic example (as reported in 1993):   A recent self-promotional ad in an advertising trade publication brags:  ‘Any channel can deliver eyeballs. But how many can include hearts and minds?’  In another ad, MTV calls itself ‘not a TV channel, but a cultural force.’  Still another and perhaps even more revealing ad shows a young man relaxed in an arm-chair with his remote control. The ad copy tells us this man is the ‘opinion leader’ among his friends.  The headline declares, ‘Buy this 24-year-old and get all his friends absolutely free.’[2]

It is impossible to gauge the amount of influence cultural giants like Twitter, Instagram, and all the other social media giants will wield in the Great Tribulation.  But, just the same, I'm glad God is still in control, and He will allow Jesus to pluck the church out of this world before that all starts.  It’s commonly called rapture.

War is seldom the war to end all wars.  But this one is getting close.  Under the holocaust of the fourth seal (Rev. 6), one-fourth of the world’s population die.  Under the sixth angel's trumpet, one-third of those survivors now die.  You would think even the worst God-haters would get religion after that!  But that doesn’t account for the stubbornness of those delusional enough to think they’re greater than God.  The people left on earth, rather than repent and give glory to the true living God, simply become more hardened than ever, and turn even more so to their material gods and devil worship.

It is indeed an amazing thing that people would worship or entrust their future to nutty things like Ouija boards, Witchcraft, and other goofiness, rather than a God who came right to us, and died for us, and rose again so we could too!  Yet, that is exactly what they do, and they get angry at anyone who tells them the truth.

It is reported that in Germany there are more registered fortune tellers than pastors.  Satan worshippers all over the world pray to the devil for him to break up the marriages of pastors.  And that’s just a faint shadow of delusion's ultimate stubbornness, which will show up when the Beast is in charge.  Dr. John Phillips, in a commentary on Revelation gives a great statement of just how unglued the whole idea of righteousness will become in the Great Tribulation:

What a picture of a crime-oriented culture!  Man has finally arrived at his goal:  a government and culture in which permissiveness is the accepted norm and where all kinds of deviation and misbehavior are applauded and encouraged, a government presided over by a fascinating but foul individual called the man of sin. [3]

Up to this juncture the seals and trumpets have been judgments of God's Allowance.  The extreme judgment in this passage indicates the progressive nature of sin and its consequences; this time the judgment is by God's Activity. It is the wrath of God that falls.  And in the day of God's wrath, who can stand?

The Psalmist says it plainer than anyone:

God is an honest judge.  He is angry with the wicked every day. Psalm 7:11

Apostle Paul wrote that clearly:

Don’t be fooled by those who try to excuse these sins, for the anger of God will fall on all who disobey him.  Ephesians 5:6

Apostle John also covered that in his Gospel:

And anyone who believes in God’s Son has eternal life.  Anyone who doesn’t obey the Son will never experience eternal life but remains under God’s angry judgment.”  John 3:36

For You Today

These judgments could tend to depress you -- if they didn't scare you to death and make your heart pound!

I am glad that God waited at least until 1956 to begin the Tribulation and His judgments.  That was the year I gave my heart to Jesus Christ.  He saved my soul, and sealed my life and eternity against the day of judgment the world is going to go through.  And if Jesus forgave enough sin to save me, He will save ANYONE!

One final word in this devotion that has turned into the length of a sermon:

If you have never trusted Christ, by asking Him to forgive your sins, but you do see now that is exactly what your heart wants more than anything, simply bow your head and tell Him that.  He’s just waiting to hear from you.

In the Valley of Jehoshaphat

Tuesday, October 25, 2022

Say to the nations far and wide:  “Get ready for war!  Call out your best warriors.  Let all your fighting men advance for the attack.  Hammer your plowshares into swords and your pruning hooks into spears.  Train even your weaklings to be warriors.  Come quickly, all you nations everywhere.  Gather together in the valley.”  And now, O Lord, call out your warriors!  “Let the nations be called to arms.  Let them march to the valley of Jehoshaphat.  There I, the Lord, will sit to pronounce judgment on them all.  Swing the sickle, for the harvest is ripe.  Come, tread the grapes, for the winepress is full.  The storage vats are overflowing with the wickedness of these people.”  Thousands upon thousands are waiting in the valley of decision.  There the day of the Lord will soon arrive.  The sun and moon will grow dark, and the stars will no longer shine.  The Lord’s voice will roar from Zion and thunder from Jerusalem, and the heavens and the earth will shake.  But the Lord will be a refuge for his people, a strong fortress for the people of Israel.  Joel 3:9-16

Human beings cannot see the future.  However, looking at the times in which we now live, and measuring it carefully against what Holy Scripture’s prophetic books paint as the picture of what end times will look like, we are living in the prologue of Armageddon, the final battle between God and all the evil forces Satan can muster, fought in what Joel called the Valley of Jehoshaphat.

What is happening in Ukraine (and other places around the world, like North Korea’s nuclear testing) is the saber-rattling of nations that will attack Israel in the final days.  It is the warm-up to the earth-shattering clash between heaven and hell, marking the end of the Prince of Darkness’ rule of terror and evil.

Of all the nations on earth that possess nuclear warheads (USA, Great Britain, Russia, China, Israel, and others), Jerusalem stands as the central point of what will be the final conflict, which will happen just prior to the return of Christ to the earth.  It marks the end of human-dominated rule and the beginning of the thousand-year divine rule of Jesus as Lord.  Christians everywhere pray for that day to come, just as Christ instructed us to pray in the final verses of Scripture:

He who is the faithful witness to all these things says, “Yes, I am coming soon!”  Amen!  Come, Lord Jesus!

Revelation 22:20

For You Today

Considering the looming possibilities of wars, even nuclear catastrophes, there is a word from God for us today upon which we must dwell; it is a strong message of hope and strength for living in uncertain times:

Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the Lord.  Psalm 27:14

That phrase, be of good courage appears 17 times in the Old Testament, and marks what waiting on the Lord builds in God’s people’s hearts, during troubled days like these.

You chew on that as you hit the Rocky Road; have a blessed day!

King of Kings; Lord of Lords

In the United Methodist Church we affirm our common belief in God as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.  It’s usually done at the first of the year, and includes the affirmation of prophetic faith in Jesus’ bodily return to set everything right.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ….He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.[1]

Until that day Christ commissions all believers to live in the here and now; we are expected to live into God’s plan for building His kingdom.  The problem is that God’s enemy, Satan, always wants to go in the opposite direction!

The Christian life is compared often in Scripture to a warfare.  And so it is!  Whenever I think of war movies, the 1940's black and white ones are the pictures in my mind's eye.  There are always some constants:

n  there is a guy who prays a lot because there's an enemy.

n  there is a couple who want to get married before Johnny goes off to battle.

n  and there is a time of preparation for the battle.

These are scenes of worship, weddings, and war.

John’s letter to the churches is organized in the same manner.  Let’s join our hearts and heads together to study what it means to be the church during today’s challenging times, and what the difficulties mean to our service of the King.

1.  Worship Scene

After this, I heard what sounded like a vast crowd in heaven shouting, “Praise the Lord!  Salvation and glory and power belong to our God.  His judgments are true and just.  He has punished the great prostitute who corrupted the earth with her immorality.  He has avenged the murder of his servants.”  And again their voices rang out:  “Praise the Lord!  The smoke from that city ascends forever and ever!”  Then the twenty-four elders and the four living beings fell down and worshiped God, who was sitting on the throne.  They cried out, “Amen!  Praise the Lord!”  And from the throne came a voice that said, “Praise our God, all his servants, all who fear him, from the least to the greatest.”  Then I heard again what sounded like the shout of a vast crowd or the roar of mighty ocean waves or the crash of loud thunder:  “Praise the Lord!  For the Lord our God, the Almighty, reigns.  Revelation 19:1-6

Only here (in the New Testament), does this phrase praise to the Lord appear.  Another translation uses the word alleluiaAt the end of this text the crowd shouts the Almighty reigns.  That descriptive word “almighty” carries the meaning, He who controls all.

At another church I served, we often sang as the call to worship, Our God Reigns.

How lovely on the mountains are the feet of those

who bring good news, good news,

Proclaiming peace and liberty to everyone,

Our God reigns, Our God reigns.

There was never a time when we sang that song that the little hairs on the back of my neck didn't stand at attention.  It put the picture in my mind of that great worship scene, where the praise of the multitudes of saved sinners lifts the roof off planet earth.  Salvation, power, honor, and glory are expressions of gratitude, reverence, and trust in the God who is omnipotent and reigns.

By this point in Revelation, God has judged the false church, and now defeats the Beast with his truth.  His judgment was predicted:

Let sinners be consumed from the earth, and let the wicked be no more. Bless the LORD, O my soul.  Praise the LORD!  Psalms 104:35 (NRSV)

And His reign was predicted through the line of David:

Your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before me; your throne shall be established forever.  2 Samuel 7:16 (NRSV)

Why do we worship in anticipation of the reign of the Lord God, Almighty?  It is the defining moment in human existence.  It is the fulfillment of the promise that sin would not always be our lot.  It is the moment when God declares that enough is indeed enough!  It is the second coming of our Lord.

Beyond the Worship Scene, there is a...

2.  Wedding Scene

A READY AND RIGHTEOUS BRIDE

Let us be glad and rejoice, and let us give honor to him.  For the time has come for the wedding feast of the Lamb, and his bride has prepared herself.  She has been given the finest of pure white linen to wear.”  For the fine linen represents the good deeds of God’s holy people.  And the angel said to me, “Write this:  Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding feast of the Lamb.”  And he added, “These are true words that come from God.”  Revelation 19:7 - 9

If the saved of the ages anticipated the second coming of Christ; it is the marriage supper of the Lamb, for which the church has waited.  Paul's passage which we read at weddings is really about the church, the bride of Jesus:

Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, in order to make her holy by cleansing her with the washing of water by the word, so as to present the church to himself in splendor, without a spot or wrinkle or anything of the kind—yes, so that she may be holy and without blemish. Ephesians 5:25 - 27 (NRSV)

This tells us that Jesus is expecting a righteous bride.  By contrast with the harlot of a false church in the Tribulation period, the true church of Christ is faithful to Him.  It is something that ought to make us pause and check the things we do daily.  Our works do follow us to glory.

But how can we be wrinkle-free?  (I can't even get a no-iron shirt out of the dryer without a major wrinkle or two -- How am I going to have my own life without spot or blemish?)  The answer is in the imputed righteousness of Christ.  We can never be perfect -- but He is, and God forgives us for Christ's sake!  That's how the church will be spotless -- Jesus puts us through the holy rinse and spin cycle!

The sight of all this made John the apostle, lose his sense of propriety -- he fell at the feet of an angel to worship him,

Then I fell down at his feet to worship him, but he said, “No, don’t worship me.  I am a servant of God, just like you and your brothers and sisters who testify about their faith in Jesus.  Worship only God.  For the essence of prophecy is to give a clear witness for Jesus.”  Revelation 19:10

Only God should be worshipped.  He is the author and finisher of our faith, and everything in scripture points to Jesus.  That which we do in Jesus' name here on earth, will become like a fine white linen garment of righteousness.

We will not wear them very long, however.  I believe, as in the case of the Elders casting down their golden crowns at the feet of Jesus, we too will gather around, and the garment of His righteousness in us will serve to reflect the glory of the throne throughout the entire universe.

Nothing created -- including the devil in the abyss, and the lost of all ages -- will be able to look in the direction of the throne.  It will be too wonderful and painful a sight for them.  But for us --- glory, glory, glory!

A worship scene, a wedding scene, and,

3.  A War Scene

Then I saw heaven opened, and a white horse was standing there.  Its rider was named Faithful and True, for he judges fairly and wages a righteous war.  His eyes were like flames of fire, and on his head were many crowns.  A name was written on him that no one understood except himself.  He wore a robe dipped in blood, and his title was the Word of God.  The armies of heaven, dressed in the finest of pure white linen, followed him on white horses.  From his mouth came a sharp sword to strike down the nations.  He will rule them with an iron rod.  He will release the fierce wrath of God, the Almighty, like juice flowing from a winepress.  On his robe at his thigh was written this title:  King of all kings and Lord of all lords.  Revelation 19:11-16

This is indeed a war scene, but there is hardly anything of war -- but there most definitely is A Warrior!  The picture of the coming of the Lord should make our mouths drop to the floor.

Dr. Jim Henry was the Senior Pastor at First Baptist Church in Orlando, Fl.  He tells of an incident from his youth.  He was saved at Hopewell Baptist near Nashville, Tenn.  Just as he entered his teens there was going to be a special service at Hopewell.  Jim lived nearly 30 miles from the church by then.  Wanting to attend, he convinced his mother to allow he and his cousin to hitch-hike out to the service.  As they were walking along, a big black Oldsmobile came down the road, going in the same direction.  Jim Henry stuck out a thumb.  Those were the days when you could still do that and not imagine you were going to be a tragic news story the next day.

As the car got near, it began to screech to a halt, and Henry noticed a State Trooper sitting behind the wheel.  He was afraid the Trooper would arrest him.  The window rolled down. Wher'ya goin' boys? he said.  Jim explained, and he and his cousin were invited to hop in.  When he got in the back seat there was another man in a suit.  The man stuck out his hand and said, Hello, Jimmy, I'm Frank G. Clement, governor of Tennessee.  I am going up to the Hopewell Church to speak, and I will be glad to give you and your friend a lift.

They took off and the patrolman got them there in a flash.  When they pulled up there was a welcoming crowd.  The whole county was there.  Who was the first one out?  Jimmy Henry!  He tipped his hand in the direction of Mr. Clement, and said:  Thanks for the ride, Governor -- and God bless you.  Ol' Jimmy Henry was somebody![2]

The fact is Jimmy Henry was next to somebody.  He was still little 13-year-old Jimmy.  Governor Clement was the somebody.

Who is somebody to you?  The last time Jesus came, He had a manger, and simple barnyard animals for admirers.  He told us plainly who he was,

You call me Teacher and Lord—and you are right, for that is what I am.                  John 13:13 (NRSV)

Yet, he was still a nobody to us all:  He came to what was his own, and his own people did not accept him.   John 1:11 (NRSV)

The Next Time

The next time Jesus comes, the only animal in sight will be the white horse underneath him, a horse ridden by a victorious, conquering King of Kings, and Lord of Lords.

n  The next time He will not be a gentle baby, with Mary singing lullabies in some feeding trough. He will be a mighty warrior with an avenging righteousness.

n  The next time He will not wear a simple shepherd's robe. He will have a garment dipped in blood, with which he will cover, cleanse, and purge the entire earth.

n  The next time He will not hold a shepherd's staff.  He will have a conquering sword that will smash the world systems into oblivion.

n  The next time He will not pass out broken bread and grape juice.   He will be marching on the grapes of wrath, and squeezing every last drop of the fierceness of a holy God who has been scorned.

n  The next time no one will put the King of Kings, and Lord of all Lords on a cross.  This time He will hold up the cross, and every knee shall bow, every tongue shall confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of the Father.  Amen!

In the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, Amen!

Chains Broken by Eggs

Monday, July 12, 2021

Come here and listen, O nations of the earth.  Let the world and everything in it hear my words.  For the Lord is enraged against the nations.  His fury is against all their armies.  He will completely destroy them, dooming them to slaughter.  Their dead will be left unburied, and the stench of rotting bodies will fill the land.  The mountains will flow with their blood.  The heavens above will melt away and disappear like a rolled-up scroll.  The stars will fall from the sky like withered leaves from a grapevine, or shriveled figs from a fig tree.  And when my sword has finished its work in the heavens, it will fall upon Edom, the nation I have marked for destruction.  The sword of the Lord is drenched with blood and covered with fat—with the blood of lambs and goats, with the fat of rams prepared for sacrifice.  Yes, the Lord will offer a sacrifice in the city of Bozrah.  He will make a mighty slaughter in Edom.  Even men as strong as wild oxen will die—the young men alongside the veterans.  The land will be soaked with blood and the soil enriched with fat.  For it is the day of the Lord’s revenge, the year when Edom will be paid back for all it did to Israel.  The streams of Edom will be filled with burning pitch, and the ground will be covered with fire.  This judgment on Edom will never end; the smoke of its burning will rise forever.  The land will lie deserted from generation to generation.  No one will live there anymore.  It will be haunted by the desert owl and the screech owl, the great owl and the raven.  For God will measure that land carefully; he will measure it for chaos and destruction.  It will be called the Land of Nothing, and all its nobles will soon be gone.  Thorns will overrun its palaces; nettles and thistles will grow in its forts.  The ruins will become a haunt for jackals and a home for owls.  Desert animals will mingle there with hyenas, their howls filling the night.  Wild goats will bleat at one another among the ruins, and night creatures will come there to rest.  There the owl will make her nest and lay her eggs.  She will hatch her young and cover them with her wings.  And the buzzards will come, each one with its mate.  Search the book of the Lord, and see what he will do.  Not one of these birds and animals will be missing, and none will lack a mate, for the Lord has promised this.  His Spirit will make it all come true.  He has surveyed and divided the land and deeded it over to those creatures.  They will possess it forever, from generation to generation.  Isaiah 34:1-17

You cannot read very far in Holy Scripture before you stumble across the judgment of God.  I have known people who never wanted to hear anything of harsh nature, rather preferring to dwell on the lovely passages that promise God’s mercy, forgiveness, and blessing.  But how can you read with such blinders?

Isaiah depicts the desolation of a nation that stood as Judah’s archenemy, as far back as the conflict between Jacob and Esau.  The Edomites, descendants of Esau, even conspired with Babylon’s 6th century BC destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple.  Many scholars connect this with the great tribulation event of God’s judgment on all nations for the sin of oppressing fellow humans.

The picture of a nest of eggs against a backdrop of chains seems odd, but a perfect representation of God’s purposes in judgment.  Out of the chains of oppressive bondage comes the promise of new life.  It is a glorious reminder of Calvary’s cataclysmic event, where the perfect sacrifice of one, totally innocent, brings the birth of eternal life as a possibility for all.  And, in the juxtaposition of the desolation of Edom, stands Edom’s land, deeded to the creatures of God’s choice, flourishing.  Who would have imagined such a turn?
Grabbing the chains of power is not, and has never been, God’s plan for His church.  Real power waits in the promise of God.

And yet, isn’t that what God has promised for those who turn their eyes upon Jesus?  Isn’t it the surety of reigning with Christ that we see? It is harmless doves elevated to the throne room; the eggs of promise breaking the chains of death!

For You Today

You chew on that as you hit the Rocky Road; have a blessed day!
