Looking Backward - Looking Forward

Wednesday, May 10, 2023

Jesus said to the people who believed in him, “You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings.  And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”  “But we are descendants of Abraham,” they said. “We have never been slaves to anyone.  What do you mean, ‘You will be set free’?”  Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave of sin.  A slave is not a permanent member of the family, but a son is part of the family forever.  So if the Son sets you free, you are truly free.  Yes, I realize that you are descendants of Abraham.  And yet some of you are trying to kill me because there’s no room in your hearts for my message.  I am telling you what I saw when I was with my Father.  But you are following the advice of your father.”

John 8:31-38

The obvious is sometimes missed in the prejudice.  The difference between what Jesus meant, and what the short-sighted people wanted to know, is that simple!

·       They looked backward to Abraham, tracing their beginnings to a man; Jesus was pointing for them to look above earthly lineage, forward to the One who had created both Abraham, and everyone else.

·       They saw things from a point in time, honoring another point in time; Jesus had held both time and eternity in His hands when He created it all.

·       They were held captive by their backwards-look; He wanted them to be set free to a Kingdom-forward-look of Who was standing in front of them.

·       They were looking-back, stuck in pride over their Abrahamic heritage; He wanted to free them to see an eternally blessed forever family.

There are two outcomes in this encounter with the people that were following Jesus.  There are those who could not see, because they had never had their eyes opened by living truth.  And there were those who would not see, because they held their eyes shut, despite having the living truth standing in front of them.  And that prejudice makes all the difference between traveling the road lesser taken, and remaining broken in the past.

How do you tell the difference?  Jesus said that some of them (the ones he was speaking to in that moment) were trying to kill him.  That meant the others were truly seeking the truth, not looking for a reason to stifle the truth.  Closing your eyes against the light does not extinguish what truly exists.  And that is the difference of humility, ready to confess ignorance, and receive forgiveness.  It’s how light enters the heart and you see the forever family Jesus came to create.

For You Today

Whatever point you have reached in life, regarding a relationship with your Creator, the genuineness of salvation (God’s forgiveness of our sins) was/is dependent on confession of our inability to be forgiven, without the shed blood of Jesus Christ.  You do not begin that relationship with prejudice on the side of human strength; it is only available to those willing to surrender their will to God’s divine, unlimited strength!

You chew on that as you hit the Rocky Road; have a blessed day!

On the Right Side of History

Monday, January 25, 2021

The Lord had said to Abram, “Leave your native country, your relatives, and your father’s family, and go to the land that I will show you.  I will make you into a great nation.  I will bless you and make you famous, and you will be a blessing to others.  I will bless those who bless you and curse those who treat you with contempt.  All the families on earth will be blessed through you.”  Genesis 12:1-3

I’m old enough to have a history with experience.  My first vote in a presidential election was in 1968; in a total of 14 elections, I voted for the winner 8 times.  In Las Vegas, being right 57% of the time means you go home with full pockets.  But I’m not sure this applies; it’s just reporting the results like the newscasters.  “Winning” is so very temporary and having the most votes simply equates with popularity.

As each of those voting seasons came to an end, the “winning side” claimed a new era of peace, justice, and the American way, that the “other side” had been defeated, and now we can begin again to set things right.  And every time I heard one of those afterglow statements of victory, I always had an uneasiness about the certitude of the winner.  Depending on whether my vote had been for the victor, my feeling was either agreeably-uncertain, or disdainfully-uncertain.  I always had a sense of what-if, as in what-if-my-vote-was-on-the-wrong-side-of-history?

Now, before I lose you in thoughts of either gloating over winning, or sour-grapes for losing, this is about neither.  It has to do with choosing the right-side of history, which has nothing to do with which side may “win” or “lose”.

Winston Churchill is often attributed for originating the phrase history is written by victors, however it is a phrase much older than World War II.  It is also suspect according to some:  One author has it that, [t]he more accurate quote would be, ‘History is temporarily twisted by people who’re going to profit from it in the short term.’[1]

Whether it comes from the political right or left, I think this expediency motive may prove flawless.  It’s simply a matter of understanding that publicity matters when it comes to staying in power; when it comes to holding the high ground in public opinion, perception is its’ own reality.

Now, all of that is a matter of human relationships, political machinations, and intentions of those who would be the victor, not the vanquished.  The tides of popularity and so-called success are short-lived.

So, what do we make of all this?  Is this just cynicism, or hyper-criticism?  Should we not participate in it at all…summarily trash everything?  Absolutely not!

So, what then?  What is the purpose in all of this?  Why even bring up the matter if there is no end to it?

Well, I’m glad you asked.

Like the unknown cards in another’s hand, God stands behind the curtain of our ability to see.  And, as with Abraham, the Lord stands ready to bless or curse, depending on whether we intend to act with or against His will.  This is the nature of God in His complete Sovereignty.  Sovereign God is the ultimate winner in complete righteousness.  His will is immutable and irresistible.  And, therefore, it is God’s will which constructs, writes, and validates any “history”.

For You Today

If you want to be on the right side of history, it is a matter of surrendering one’s heart and life to God’s will.

You chew on that as you hit the Rocky Road; have a blessed day!

Of God, Humankind, and Ants

Friday, January 8, 2021

Honor the Lord, you heavenly beings; honor the Lord for his glory and strength.  Honor the Lord for the glory of his name.  Worship the Lord in the splendor of his holiness.  The voice of the Lord echoes above the sea.  The God of glory thunders.  The Lord thunders over the mighty sea.  The voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is majestic.  The voice of the Lord splits the mighty cedars; the Lord shatters the cedars of Lebanon.  He makes Lebanon’s mountains skip like a calf; he makes Mount Hermon leap like a young wild ox.  The voice of the Lord strikes with bolts of lightning.  The voice of the Lord makes the barren wilderness quake; the Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.  The voice of the Lord twists mighty oaks and strips the forests bare.  In his Temple everyone shouts, “Glory!”  The Lord rules over the floodwaters.  The Lord reigns as king forever.  The Lord gives his people strength.  The Lord blesses them with peace.  Psalm 29:1-11

I’m a good bit larger than an ant.  And that’s not just because of pounds gained over the holidays, or coronavirus boredom eating; it’s just the nature of humans and ants. That is also the kind of relationship between humankind and God; we are a lot smaller than the I AM.

It’s easy enough for a human to crush an ant without much effort.  After all, at my post-holiday length, girth, and mass, it would take around 45,000 ants to equal the space I take up on this planet.  Still, if given a choice, I do not squash ants; they are God’s creatures, and you don’t mess with that.  Unless they sting you!  Or infest your picnic.  Or start gnawing the beams that hold your house up.  Then you call the exterminator.  As part of humanity my benevolence towards ants does have a limit.

There is also a correlation in this with our relationship to our Creator.  He doesn’t smash us like unwanted bugs; His benevolence and patience extend to humankind on a much deeper level than ours does toward ants (and each other).

Aside from the fact that God’s understanding of us is much greater than our understanding of anything, God also has limitless capacity for grace and mercy.  It is a good thing that is true, because we wouldn’t stand a chance of surviving otherwise.

And that is where my astonishment about we humans leaps to the foreground.  I am amazed at how lightly humankind presumes upon God’s grace and mercy by treading on His holiness.  It is almost like an ant invading the picnic and staring the human in the face and saying, I’m taking that slice of gooey German chocolate cake, buddy…and what’re YOU gonna do about it?  I can tell you, an ant with an attitude like that would be a stain on the checkered tablecloth in a heartbeat.

The Psalmist tells us our attitude towards God should be that of honor and worship.  That is a far cry from the reality of today’s world.  There are so many who deny even the existence of God, let alone His preeminence.  Many acknowledge God’s existence, but their lack of honor and worship disdains His rightful place in our lives.  For too many humans, worship is reduced to a ritualistic nod of acquiescence to custom, or simply doing what one must to cover the bases just in case God might notice their naughtiness and take away their toys.  We humans can be arrogant and petulant enough to make nursery school children look like Harvard scholars.  We seem to be as thankless to our Creator as ants raiding the picnic.

Unfortunately, it has always been thus.  The first thing Adam did upon hearing there was nothing forbidden him, except that one tree in the middle of the garden, was to hunt up a ladder to pick the highest cherry on the limb.  Our first parents literally ate themselves right out of house and home.  There is nothing like forbidden fruit to ensure we humans will make another stupid choice.

To the point for today’s Psalm…this poetic reminder of God’s majesty, holiness, and power, and the call to worship Him with all reverence and fidelity, is no suggestion; it is the sound of the ram’s horn, an alert that we stop being petulant ants at God’s picnic, and line up to serve the King of Kings.

For You Today

Here’s a good question at the start of another year:

What will you do differently this year to keep your worship of God genuine, fresh, and holy?  He is that important, you know.

You chew on that as you hit the Rocky Road; have a blessed day!

Lies That Kill - Series #1. False Teachers; Don't Believe Them

This letter is from Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus, appointed by the command of God our Savior and Christ Jesus, who gives us hope.  I am writing to Timothy, my true son in the faith.  May God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord give you grace, mercy, and peace.  When I left for Macedonia, I urged you to stay there in Ephesus and stop those whose teaching is contrary to the truth.  Don’t let them waste their time in endless discussion of myths and spiritual pedigrees.  These things only lead to meaningless speculations, which don’t help people live a life of faith in God.  The purpose of my instruction is that all believers would be filled with love that comes from a pure heart, a clear conscience, and genuine faith.  But some people have missed this whole point.  They have turned away from these things and spend their time in meaningless discussions.  They want to be known as teachers of the law of Moses, but they don’t know what they are talking about, even though they speak so confidently.  We know that the law is good when used correctly.  For the law was not intended for people who do what is right.  It is for people who are lawless and rebellious, who are ungodly and sinful, who consider nothing sacred and defile what is holy, who kill their father or mother or commit other murders.  The law is for people who are sexually immoral, or who practice homosexuality, or are slave traders, liars, promise breakers, or who do anything else that contradicts the wholesome teaching  that comes from the glorious Good News entrusted to me by our blessed God.
1 Timothy 1:1-11
A 2nd grader explained what false doctrine is...he said: false docter-in is what happens when sick people get the wrong medicine!  That's pretty close to the result of false doctrine.  When people are wrongly taught in spiritual matters they get morally sick.  The best medicine is to study God’s Word; right doctrine is like an immunization or cure against disease.
The epistles of Paul are full of great spiritual medicine to help us.  In Paul's day there were plenty of false teachers to go around. The Gnostics were steeped in false belief, just a hair removed from truth.  They believed in God, and even Jesus, but saw God as so far removed from man that there could never be a relationship.  And since God wouldn't touch or create anything bad (like material things, or humans), the creation happened when an emanation, slightly lesser in deity, went out from God.  From that emanation, another, lesser emanation flowed – and another – until the deity of God was far enough removed to dabble in things of the evil flesh.
According to gnostic thinking, Jesus was one of those lesser emanations; he was better and more holy than the average bear, but a lot less than God.  Since they considered our fleshly bodies evil, they also dismissed resurrection of the physical body.  Paul knew such teachers were always on the prowl for converts:
I know that false teachers, like vicious wolves, will come in among you after I leave, not sparing the flock.  Even some men from your own group will rise up and distort the truth in order to draw a following. Acts 20:29-30
In our day we have Mormonism, which is a rebirth of the error of gnosticism; they do not believe in the deity of Jesus Christ.
We also have the New Age teachers who would rather study the emanations than accept the revealed Word of God.
Among the worst of false teachers are those who teach the prosperity gospel, diverting our attention from the riches of faith, which God said was much more important than worrying about material things or wealth.[2]
False teachers abound, so we need what truth brings.

Truth brings encouragement

Paul left Timothy in Ephesus as a pastor, so Paul could continue on to Philippi to check on the church there.  This first letter to Timothy is filled with encouraging, strengthening help.  Paul called Timothy his true son in the ministry.  I don't know what could be more encouraging for a timid young pastor than to have the affirmation of the seasoned elder statesman of the faith.
God's people need to know how to live like God's people.  That means knowing how to recognize and deal with false teaching.  The question becomes, How can I be safe from false teachers?  The answer centers around what Paul revealed to Timothy as the reason he was writing:
The purpose of my instruction is that all believers would be filled with love that comes from a pure heart, a clear conscience, and genuine faith.  1 Timothy 1:5
Simply stated, the "bullseye" of Christianity is love.  The things which help keep a believer on track, and safe from every twit who has a new way of freeing your spirit or being at one with the cosmic presence, are the trinity of pure heart, good conscience and sincere faith.  From these, genuine Christian love sprouts like a redwood.  The best way to avoid a counterfeit anything is to constantly handle the real thing.
Notice the rings of the bullseye Paul laid-out for Timothy...

The Bullseye's Outer Ring:  A Pure Heart
The (spiritual) heart is the center of your will, emotions and mind.  This is where all of your decisions are made.
Our physical heart makes biological life possible.  The spiritual heart makes a relationship with God possible.
What makes a heart pure?
The only way for a heart to be clean is for God to clean it.  Isaiah said that all of our attmepts to clean up our own spiritual lives are like "filthy rags"
The special promise of God is that we can come to Him through Jesus' unique act of salvation.  Jesus died on the cross for our sins, and, if we confess our sins he forgive us our sins and purifies us from all unrighteousness.(1 John 1:9)
The Bullseye's Middle Ring:  A Good Conscience
Conscience is a moral barometer; it tells us whether we are doing right or wrong.  Responding to that Biblically is what we call integrity, or doing what you say you'll do.  It is also called a pure heart, or a heart of integrity.
Today even integrity is a relative matter.  Politicians, (even Presidents) are judged on their ability to govern and integrity seems to have nothing to do with the job.  Preachers discovered in extra-marital affairs go right on with their programs.  This is so different than what the Bible calls for in believers.
A good conscience is available to those whose walk lives up to their talk.  Emerson said of Seneca the philosopher, He (says) the loveliest things, if only he had the right to say them."[3]
A pure heart is the only place to start in the Christian life...But it is only a start!  Any conversion experience that still leaves you living a sinful life, without a deep desire to change, like a drowning man wants a boat, is not a conversion at all.  Love grows in a pure heart, where right actions allow good conscience.
The Bullseye's Center:  Sincere Faith
Faith is most often thought as being that quality of believing.  We say, we have faith in Jesus.  That is a verbal sense of the word faith.  But here Paul uses faith as a noun.  It is the object of belief, or what you believe.  Simply put, a sincere faith is something worth believing in!
In Paul's context of opposing the false teachers, he was holding up THE FAITH, his doctrine of Christ.  He was saying that there is a time to be saved (pure heart) and a Godly way to live life (good conscience), and a sincere, or genuine doctrine to guide them both.  We move from the outer edge of the target to the middle!
Paul gave this concept to the Hebrews as well:
Facing the truth we have to admit that just because a person is saved does not guarantee he is immediately wise.  Many come to Christ with very little knowledge of the doctrines of the faith.  Unfortunately, too many believers never make a serious effort to move past the basics of the faith.  It’s not a matter of getting degrees in seminary or a certificate to hang on the wall.  Getting a deeper understanding of Christ, and how He expects us to live is a matter of obedience and coming to the point of being a strong witness to honor Christ.
Once past that point of salvation we have a responsibility to understand our faith.
There are two primary reasons for growing deeper in understanding faith in Christ:
Freedom for me
So many believers live defeated lives because they have so little knowledge of the liberating reality of Christ.
Paul says many have missed this whole point which means missing the mark, which is one of the textbook definitions of the word sin.  Christ came that you might have liberty, an abundant life of joy and peace.
When I begin to understand the doctrines of salvation and the joy of my inheritance in Christ, I am set free from worry and defeat…not just to feel the winds of freedom blowing in my hair as I do whatever I want…but to experience just how wonderful the relationship to Christ becomes when I know how to please and honor my Lord, and act like it too!
Freedom for you.
Paul also says that those who missed the mark had turned to meaningless talk; that implies an empty result.  Whenever the subject of spiritual things comes up, folks who don't know any better want to debate empty issues that end in fruitless controversy.
That has kept more people out of the kingdom than all the bars and brothels in the world.
There is a right and wrong purpose of doctrine.  To discuss interesting, but surface issues of Christianity, while countless thousands in our own neighborhood perish without Jesus is wrong!  To allow years of learning the faith to perfect our witness so we may lead souls to the throne is right!
Some things are just not debatable.
So, let’s review the progression of a babe in Christ to a strong disciple:
·       A person on the outer ring of the bullseye receives a pure heart from God when he confesses his sins;
·       a person hitting the next closest ring to the bullseye is living his life in a holy manner, obedient, a person of good conscience;
·       but the one who takes the time to know Christ in an ever increasingly intimate way -- His fellowship, His doctrines, His power, His suffering...that is a person who has HIT the center of the bullseye!
Beloved, none of us can afford to be ignorant of the faith.  People are more informed than ever, and have a myriad of choices concerning religion.  If we are to remain strong as a witness for Christ, leading people out of darkness, we will have to go…
·       past the elementary doctrine of salvation, and
·       past the simple honest life of good conscience;
·       we must go on to maturity in the faith.
The bullseye in Christian discipleship is to be a strong believer, grounded in Christ and His word.  All the rest is passing away.
In the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit…Amen!
