The Will to Choose

Wednesday, April 12, 2023

But if you refuse to serve the Lord, then choose today whom you will serve. Would you prefer the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates?  Or will it be the gods of the Amorites in whose land you now live?  But as for me and my family, we will serve the Lord.”  Joshua 24:15

Albert Einstein gave an interview in 1929 in which he shared some of his personal philosophy, including a human being’s will:

"I am a determinist.  As such, I do not believe in free will.  The Jews believe in free will.  They believe that man shapes his own life.  I reject that doctrine philosophically.  In that respect I am not a Jew… I believe with Schopenhauer:  We can do what we wish, but we can only wish what we must.  Practically, I am, nevertheless, compelled to act is if freedom of the will existed.  If I wish to live in a civilized community, I must act as if man is a responsible being.  I claim credit for nothing.  Everything is determined, the beginning as well as the end, by forces over which we have no control.  It is determined for the insect as well as for the star.  Human being, vegetables or cosmic dust, we all dance to an invisible tune, intoned in the distance by a mysterious player.”[1]

I am certainly no match for the likes of Albert Einstein; I have trouble enough keeping up with my grandchildren.  On the other hand, being an individual, I strongly believe I possess the choice to agree (or not) with his philosophy.

Einstein’s deterministic view of human free will borders closely on a religiously hyper-Calvinistic version of irresistable grace, where God has pre-ordained who will be saved, and we have no choice in that matter…or anything else.  On this point I have to take issue, as I believe Scripture already does:

For the Lord is the Spirit, and wherever the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.  2 Corinthians 3:17

Einstein was born a Jew, yet held the full expression of that heritage at arm’s length, choosing a rather sad and hollow deterministic view of life’s meaning and purpose.  Yet, as Christians belive, the image of God, stamped upon his soul, cannot utterly deny the mysterious player of the invisible tune to which he gives place in that interview.  It’s my belief that crack in Einstein’s systematic theology of an imposed will by the hidden tune-player (God) demonstrates something of a humility to admit he doesn’t know everything.

If, as Scripture indicates[2], there is a beginning and an ending which God has pre-determined, and, behind the scenes is orchestrating, there is certainly room for human free will to exist.  What Scripture tells us is God’s sovereign will is determinative…the beginning of things created in 6 days, and the ending of things a re-creation of Paradise.  That does leave the meantime, the middle of things, in which we live, move, and have our being.  If we are to hold Scripture objectively, without prejudice, God gives us this moment to “determine” by our volitional choice where we will be when the cosmic dust settles.

For You Today

The bottom line is the coming judgment of God.  If all were set-in-stone, determined without room for choice, where would be the grace of God?

You chew on that as you hit the Rocky Road; have a blessed day!

What is God Like?

Wednesday, July 1, 2021

How great is the Lord, how deserving of praise, in the city of our God, which sits on his holy mountain!  It is high and magnificent; the whole earth rejoices to see it!  Mount Zion, the holy mountain, is the city of the great King!  God himself is in Jerusalem’s towers, revealing himself as its defender.  The kings of the earth joined forces and advanced against the city.  But when they saw it, they were stunned; they were terrified and ran away.  They were gripped with terror and writhed in pain like a woman in labor.  You destroyed them like the mighty ships of Tarshish shattered by a powerful east wind.  We had heard of the city’s glory, but now we have seen it ourselves—the city of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.  It is the city of our God; he will make it safe forever.   Interlude
O God, we meditate on your unfailing love as we worship in your Temple.  As your name deserves, O God, you will be praised to the ends of the earth.  Your strong right hand is filled with victory.  Let the people on Mount Zion rejoice.  Let all the towns of Judah be glad because of your justice.  Go, inspect the city of Jerusalem.  Walk around and count the many towers.  Take note of the fortified walls, and tour all the citadels, that you may describe them to future generations.  For that is what God is like.  He is our God forever and ever, and he will guide us until we die.  Psalm 48:1-14

Throughout Scripture we find the principle of free will, the right God has placed within each soul to decide the course our life will take.  The desire for the exercise of this freedom is self-evident.  If you need a chapter and verse proof text, note what Joshua said to the Israelites on the eve of entering into the Promised Land:

…choose today whom you will serve.  Joshua 24:15b

The nation of former slaves was at least hundreds of thousands strong, perhaps, according to some scholars, several million.  Joshua offered that challenge of life’s most important question, what God will you serve?

On a personal level, to find the answer within my heart and soul for that question, I had to ask another question, who is God (JHWH, Jesus)…what is he like?

The answer to both questions is nestled into today’s text; you cannot see Him, but you can begin to understand what he is like.  God is like the towers and walls of the citadel, Jerusalem, God’s own city.  Those walls and towers are protection for the people within, and an impenetrable fortress to those who would even think to assail her.  But, before this metaphor of walls describing God is carried too far, leaving us to imagine God as an impassable monolith, just standing as another idol, lifeless, vast, but unthinking, move beyond the comparison and look at the evidence – personal evidence.  God entered time and space from above and outside time and space.  The Creator entered His own creation and became flesh, blood, and bone…and it was too much for us to live in His presence.  The creation crucified our Creator.  So he rose from the grave and offers us a second chance.

What is God like?  He is all the vast power of the universe and beyond.  As the genius of Michelangelo was more than his paintings or sculptures, the creation is always so much less than the Creator.  This is why the Psalmist began his musical ode to the God of Jerusalem’s towers with extolling the worthiness of God to receive praise and honor.

For You Today

Our Creator is beyond comprehension, but not beyond inviting us into His presence. Like Joshua’s challenge to the Israelites as they took the next step in their journey to choose today the God you will serve, that offer to come inside the walls of Mount Zion with our hearts, souls, and eternal lives still stands before each of us.  We recognize what God is like.  But with that understanding God leaves us choice of whether we will serve him with all our heart, mind, soul, and strength.

In a few days we will celebrate our independence in America.  It is a sacred gift and responsibility.  We choose to live with and serve our fellow Americans.  But how much greater the other choice – to serve the God of all freedom.

You chew on that as you hit the Rocky Road; have a blessed day!

Following the Truth

Tuesday, March 17, 2020

I don’t want you to forget, dear brothers and sisters, about our ancestors in the wilderness long ago.  All of them were guided by a cloud that moved ahead of them, and all of them walked through the sea on dry ground.  In the cloud and in the sea, all of them were baptized as followers of Moses.  All of them ate the same spiritual food, and all of them drank the same spiritual water.  For they drank from the spiritual rock that traveled with them, and that rock was Christ.  Yet God was not pleased with most of them, and their bodies were scattered in the wilderness.  These things happened as a warning to us, so that we would not crave evil things as they did, or worship idols as some of them did.  As the Scriptures say, “The people celebrated with feasting and drinking, and they indulged in pagan revelry.”  And we must not engage in sexual immorality as some of them did, causing 23,000 of them to die in one day.  Nor should we put Christ to the test, as some of them did and then died from snakebites.  And don’t grumble as some of them did, and then were destroyed by the angel of death.  These things happened to them as examples for us.  They were written down to warn us who live at the end of the age.  1 Corinthians 10:1-11

Jesus said the truth will set you free.[1]  This week I watched (yet another) broadcast warning about dangers of the Coronavirus, and the epidemiologist being interviewed was asked what one thing government could do to help stem the spread of this disease.  His answer was that our government must be totally transparent with the truth.  Perhaps this scientist was quoting Jesus.
Movements, like the Israelites following Moses out of Egypt, are faith-based, and can come unglued in a hurry; just ask any presidential candidate who never won the election.  But, what about those which appear to be successful?  What about the elections won?  What then?  I seem to recall President Bill Clinton uttering that storied phrase:  O’m’gosh…I’m president; what do I do now?  I’m sure he wasn’t the first president who sensed he was in way over his head.  On a personal note, I had that sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach when I was chosen to serve in my first pastorate.  Mine was…Oh, man, what are these people thinking?  Do they really think I’m Moses?  What will they do when they find out I’m just like them…trying to find God’s will and serve, but clueless as to the next step?
The truth…as transparent as it comes…that’s what it’s like for God’s people who want to be obediently walking by faith.  To follow the truth you step out on a lot of thin air, not knowing, but believing that air is inhabited by God’s Spirit, and will hold you up.
The apostle Paul warned the Corinthian believers to remember Moses, the commands of God, and how the early followers of Yahweh messed it up with distractions like sexual perversity and cultural cravings.  There were a lot of bodies strewn all over the desert wilderness because of wavering faith and wanton disobedience.
What is most important in truth-following comes down to a settledness without stubbornness.  That means if you want to follow Jesus, the embodiment of truth and righteousness, you must choose like Joshua:

But as for me and my family, we will serve the Lord.”  Joshua 24:15b

But there cannot be a stubborn cantankerousness about it all; God’s Spirit won’t hang with immovable, unfeeling, hardened hearts.  There are enough of those to go around; God wants willing, open, and vulnerable hearts.
For You Today
Paul wrote that the mistakes of the early followers were written down for the benefit of current followers.  What’s the next generation going to say about you?

The Ability to Blush

Wednesday, May 16, 2018
At the time of the sacrifice, I stood up from where I had sat in mourning with my clothes torn.  I fell to my knees and lifted my hands to the Lord my God.  I prayed, “O my God, I am utterly ashamed; I blush to lift up my face to you.  For our sins are piled higher than our heads, and our guilt has reached to the heavens.  From the days of our ancestors until now, we have been steeped in sin.  That is why we and our kings and our priests have been at the mercy of the pagan kings of the land.  We have been killed, captured, robbed, and disgraced, just as we are today.  “But now we have been given a brief moment of grace, for the Lord our God has allowed a few of us to survive as a remnant.  He has given us security in this holy place.  Our God has brightened our eyes and granted us some relief from our slavery.  For we were slaves, but in his unfailing love our God did not abandon us in our slavery.  Instead, he caused the kings of Persia to treat us favorably.  He revived us so we could rebuild the Temple of our God and repair its ruins.  He has given us a protective wall in Judah and Jerusalem.  “And now, O our God, what can we say after all of this?  For once again we have abandoned your commands!  Your servants the prophets warned us when they said, ‘The land you are entering to possess is totally defiled by the detestable practices of the people living there.  From one end to the other, the land is filled with corruption.  Don’t let your daughters marry their sons!  Don’t take their daughters as wives for your sons.  Don’t ever promote the peace and prosperity of those nations.  If you follow these instructions, you will be strong and will enjoy the good things the land produces, and you will leave this prosperity to your children forever.’  Ezra 9:5-12(NLT)
Ezra was instrumental in rebuilding Jerusalem after the Babylonian captivity.  After hearing reports that the people had totally disregarded God’s commands to become involved in sinful practices, he did what we 21st century Christians have seem to lost the ability to do…Ezra blushed with embarrassment before God.  In his priestly prayer Ezra lifted up the sins of a nation, steeped for generations in spiritual adultery.
Many have misread this prohibition of inter-marrying as a racial issue.  God never forbade inter-racial, or inter-cultural marriage; God’s issue was inter-spiritual unions…a joining of those with faith to those without.  It is marrying outside your faith, not outside your race, that brings the judgment of God on your choices.
The Apostle Paul made it pretty clear (from just about any perspective…marriage, business partners, playdates for children), it is spiritual, not racial difference that matters when it comes to choosing your life partner, friends or associates.
Don’t team up with those who are unbelievers. How can righteousness be a partner with wickedness? How can light live with darkness?  2 Corinthians 6:14(NLT)
God’s reasons are God’s reasons, and we cannot second-guess the Almighty.  However, you can see, from a human reasoning perspective, the logic of Christians choosing those with strong faith in Christ as friends, and particularly those with whom you will spend a lifetime in marriage.  Faith (or the absence of faith) influences virtually every desire, ethic, or decision you make.  For those who sincerely desire to be transformed by Christ into the image of Christ, the desires, intentions and direction of life is going to be 180o from those interested in the world.
Simply put…you cannot go East and West at the same time!
For You Today
Last words of famous people are often recorded as powerful messages for generations to come.  The successor to Moses, Joshua, led the people of God in the conquest of the Promised Land.  As he said his farewell after decades of leading, Joshua held up that same principle of obedience with his last words before the new nation:
But if you refuse to serve the Lord, then choose today whom you will serve.  Would you prefer the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates?  Or will it be the gods of the Amorites in whose land you now live?  But as for me and my family, we will serve the Lord.”  Joshua 24:15(NLT)

The Trouble With Buffet Faith

Wednsday, October 11, 2017
“The Lord your God will soon bring you into the land he swore to give you when he made a vow to your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.  It is a land with large, prosperous cities that you did not build.  The houses will be richly stocked with goods you did not produce.  You will draw water from cisterns you did not dig, and you will eat from vineyards and olive trees you did not plant.  When you have eaten your fill in this land, be careful not to forget the Lord, who rescued you from slavery in the land of Egypt.  You must fear the Lord your God and serve him.  When you take an oath, you must use only his name.  “You must not worship any of the gods of neighboring nations, for the Lord your God, who lives among you, is a jealous God.  His anger will flare up against you, and he will wipe you from the face of the earth.  You must not test the Lord your God as you did when you complained at Massah.  You must diligently obey the commands of the Lord your God—all the laws and decrees he has given you.  Do what is right and good in the Lord’s sight, so all will go well with you.  Then you will enter and occupy the good land that the Lord swore to give your ancestors.  You will drive out all the enemies living in the land, just as the Lord said you would.  “In the future your children will ask you, ‘What is the meaning of these laws, decrees, and regulations that the Lord our God has commanded us to obey?’  “Then you must tell them, ‘We were Pharaoh’s slaves in Egypt, but the Lord brought us out of Egypt with his strong hand.  The Lord did miraculous signs and wonders before our eyes, dealing terrifying blows against Egypt and Pharaoh and all his people.  He brought us out of Egypt so he could give us this land he had sworn to give our ancestors.  And the Lord our God commanded us to obey all these decrees and to fear him so he can continue to bless us and preserve our lives, as he has done to this day.  For we will be counted as righteous when we obey all the commands the Lord our God has given us.’
Deuteronomy 6:10-25(NLT)
It seems buffet faith is quite popular these days.  People claim to be spiritual, but not religious.  In a sense that’s good, not falling back into ritual for the sake of getting religious duties out of the way, so you can get on with what you really want to do.  However, a buffet approach to faith isn’t much better, where you take a little bit of this or that into your belief…whatever scratches the itch, so to speak…mix & match different appealing combinations of faith until you have a plateful.  That may work as a handy source of party chatter, but it will fail you in the middle of the night when life begins to fall apart.
Now, don’t misread this – I am quite comfortable with the idea of “tolerance” – meaning I will not presume to push my faith down anyone else’s throat; but tolerating can never be confused with validating or agreement with another’s belief system.
In our Scripture today you would notice God took great pains to make sure Israel understood they were to keep their faith razor sharp, not letting other gods creep into their worship.  That wasn’t intolerance; that was making certain their faith didn’t fall apart and leave them as spiritual orphans, having a name of being Godly, and no real connection with the God who had saved them from bondage down in Egypt.
Buffet-style religion or faith systems don’t come near a vibrant relationship with God, made possible by Jesus’ death on the cross.  Scripture declares that we cannot purchase that relationship – it is offered without any fees, shipping or handling.  But, it IS conditional; we come with the understanding that it is God, Creator, sustainer and sovereign of the universe we serve, and Him only.
Over and again Scripture tells us to keep every worldly and false influence at bay so you worship God alone.  As one example, after years of leading Israel to conquer the Promised Land, Joshua was about to turn in his retirement papers; he stood and addressed all the people one more time about being clear in their worship of Almighty God:
But if you refuse to serve the Lord, then choose today whom you will serve.  Would you prefer the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates?  Or will it be the gods of the Amorites in whose land you now live?  But as for me and my family, we will serve the Lord.”
Joshua 24:15(NLT)

When You Come To a Fork in the Road...

The real estate agent was attempting to be honest, telling the prospective buyers the disadvantages and the advantages of the house:  The disadvantages are that the stockyard is just a half-mile to the west; North is a rubber factory; two bloks East is the sewage plant; and just south is the paper mill.
The couple asked:  What are the advantages?
She replied:  You can always tell which way the wind is blowing.
For those of us who look at history as the unfolding of God's plan and purpose, the winds of nations rushing toward a collision course with disaster are unmistakable.
No nation – especially a powerful and greatly-blessed nation as ours is, exists for its own glory, or to carry out its own plans.  The greatness of our (or any) country depends on the adherence of the people to the principles of righteousness and faith toward God.
Years ago the U.S. Senate chaplain, Richard C. Halverson said,
A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government.  It can only exist until the voters discover that they can votethemselves money from the Public Treasury.  From that moment on the majority always votes for candidates promising the most benefits from the Public Treasury...with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship.  That dictatorship may be disguised in the form of a multi-trillion dollar national deficit.
The average of the world's greatest civilizations has been 200 years. These nations have progressed through the following sequence:
From bondage to spiritual faith – From spiritual faith to great courage
From courage to liberty - From liberty to abundance
From abundance to selfishness – From selfishness to complacency
From complacency to apathy – From apathy to dependence
From dependence back into bondage."
I'm no doomsayer, but we fit this pattern.  We have travelled far down that road from the courage and unselfishness of our Revolutionary forefathers, to the present day with its' entitlement mentality.  We, as in all generations past, face the constant threat of judgments, both natural and spiritual.
Joshua took over the leadership of God's people when Moses’ time expired.  He led a bunch of rag-tag slaves over Jordan to conquer Palestine.  They had come out of the bondage of Egypt to become the people of God, wealthy, powerful, and respected by every nation on earth.
Just as it was the hand of God that formed the nation of Israel and blessed her, so it is with the land of the free and the home of the brave.  We sing God Bless America, and the chills run up and down our spines.  Some tremble out of nostalgic sentiment; we simply wish for what used to be.  Still others use that sentiment to manipulate a popularity to carry them into public office.
But if you tremble, and your heart is stirred in fear and holy reverence for the God who gave the blessing of His hand upon our nation, and Who (if He so chooses) could remove that hand and watch us fold up like a spider stuck in the belly...well, then you tremble rightly, and with good cause.
Just as the word spoken by the God of Creation at the beginning of time, that His Spirit would not always be patient, and that His judgments are not lagging behind, God will not ALWAYS bless America just because He once did!
·       He will not bless a nation that says In God we trust, and then pulls the plug on prayer.
·       He will not bless a nationthat says, Thou shalt not kill, yet stands idly by while our so-called healing professionals every year cut the lifeline on a million heartbeats before unborn eyes see the light of day.
·       He will not bless an America that offers Islaamic prayers in the Senate, and refuses to hear the name of Jesus in the classroom.
I am an American; 69 years worth, last Monday.  When my country asked, I served in our most unpopular war in Southeast Asia.  I pay taxes.  I love apple pie and my Mom.  I don't park in handicapped parking zones, and I answer Congressional junk-mail surveys.  I recycle and don't litter if I can help it.  I vote in elections and support the turkeys the rest of you elect.
I am not a perfect citizen...but I am an American!
And so, when I say this next sentence:
·       you mark it down as from one who despises Communism, socialism, and the other forms of repressive power-grabbing;
·       you mark it down as coming from one who loves this country, and the values it was founded upon;
·       you mark it down as from one whose heart breaks when I see poverty, crime, war, and indifference destroying the spirit and hope of our land.....
THIS COUNTRY MUST RETURN TO GOD, OR WE FACE THE GREATEST RETRIBUTION THE HAND OF GOD HAS LAID UPON A NATION SINCE THE DAWN OF MAN.
What must America do for God to once again bless her?  If God is going to bless America, we will have to listen to sound advice from God’s Word. And we will have to do more than listen – this is a time to act!
The erstwhile sage and philosopher from Brooklyn, New York, Yogi Berra once said, when you come to a fork in the road, take it!  You and I would probably and immediately ask, which one?
Please think with me about some symbols of dealing with the choices that are before us, and what Christians, genuine believers who are surrendered to the Lordship of Jesus Christ, sacrificial, unselfish, God-honoring and faith-filled people will do when faced with the fork-in-the-road kinds of decisions we see destroying our land today.
First there is the symbol of the Ostrich[ii]

The old expression alludes to sticking your head in the sand.  This is a way of avoiding having to see the dangers around.  An ostrich at a fork in the road would refuse to see the choice that has to be made.  For humans, Christians in particular, NOT making a choice is making a choice to stick your head in the sand.
Second is the symbol of the Chameleon[iii]

Chameleons change color so as to fit-in with the background.  A human who acts like a chameleon doesn’t want anyone to know what his thoughts and real character are; he blends-in with what will produce the least amount of conflict.  A chameleon will see a fork in the road and jump into the grass, turn green and stay real still.  It’s different than the ostrich…this is professional hiding!
Third is the symbol of the DoDo Bird[iv]

In case you’ve never heard, the DoDo is extinct.  You have to go to a museum to see its skeleton!
It’s extinction came about (say scientists) due to the fact that, although the bird had wings, it never flew.  God made it with wings, but it refused to use what God had given.
What would be a DoDo bird’s reaction to a fork in the road?  It would stop and sit down in the middle of the road in front of the fork, paralyzed, refusing to make a decision; it would get run-over by the next car.  Among the human population the DoDo bird has a lot of cousins!
And so…ostrich head-burying, chameleon hiding, DoDo do-nothing…
And Finally, the symbol of the Eagle[v]

Here we are on the eve of celebrating our nation’s independence day – a country that has for its national symbol the bald eagle.
When America was still quite a young there was a lot to decide upon as to what symbols would represent this country.  The eagle was chosen over the objections of Benjamin Franklin, who wanted the U.S. represented by the turkey.  Now, there’s a big difference between turkeys and eagles.  Eagles are birds of prey, turkeys are the guest of honor at the dinner table.
What would an eagle do at a fork in the road?
I think it would do what it was created to do – lift off, fly over the scene, spot something that fits its eye, and get busy getting dinner!
Getting back to Joshua and the nation of Israel, that is what they did…
·       they stopped burying their ostrich heads in the Sinai desert and began to follow God’s leading boldly
·       they stopped trying to blend in with the Amorites, Amalekites, Perizites and all the other “ites” like a chamelon on steroids, and became the peculiar stand-out treasure known as the people who served JHWH, the one, true living God
·       they stopped being DoDo’s who never learned to use their wings and fly
·       they started being eagles, conquerors of Canaan.
Today there are many churches that choose anything but flying like eagles.
Like ostriches, we choose our comfortable hole in the sand, where we can block out what’s really happening; we deny there’s a fork in the road, and sooner or later we will just fade into the landscape, a footnote listed in the minutes of an Annual Conference that closes the doors for good.
We choose to be chameleon churches, fitting-in with a safe background of compromising our history and future by just trying to not have too much controversy or anything that would force us to take a stand.
We choose the way of the DoDo if we get paralyzed by what it might cost to fly; we don’t want to do anything to jeapordize what we have.
Jesus told a parable one time about making decisions at the fork in the road.  It was about servants who were given some of their Master’s goods to manage while the Lord of the house was on an extended trip.
Some of the servants worked at investing what the Master had given.  They gained some interest and profit to turn over to the Master when he returned.  But one of the servants played the fearful ostrich and buried all his trust in the sand.  He played the hiding chameleon, who tried to be like all the people around him, fishing and playing golf when he should have been serving the Master.  And he ended up a paralyzed dodo, not understanding the most basic thing about why he was created – to soar like the Master’s eagle in training.  Rather, he was content to scratch around in the dust like a chicken in Colonel Sander’s back yard.
Our lay delegate shared with you that some of the more disturbing issues our denomination is continuing to fuss-over are just not going to go away.  Being an ostrich and burying our heads so we can just deny there’s a problem doesn’t work.
Fitting-in with the crowd like a chameleon church will just mean you’ll end up going over the cliff when the crowd moves in that direction.
And being like the DoDo bird, refusing to fly, because you have never flown before will make you just as extinct as the 7 churches that were closed at Annual Conference this year.
Joshua said to his flock, what are you going to do about this fork in the road?  Make up your mind…be an ostrich, chameleon, dodo or turkey if you want; but me and my house are going to serve the Lord of the Eagle.  Who is on the Lord’s side?
Every one of us humans is going to live until the day we die.  That is a fork in the road you cannot change.  So, today I would like to say to you, as a dying man, speaking to dying people, it doesn’t matter to a dying person which fork you take, but you’d better do something; time’s running out!  People of God…act with the courage of eagles!
In the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit!
