APOCALYPSE - a not-so-gradual Global Warming

Thursday, November 5, 2020

Then the seven angels with the seven trumpets prepared to blow their mighty blasts.  The first angel blew his trumpet, and hail and fire mixed with blood were thrown down on the earth.  One-third of the earth was set on fire, one-third of the trees were burned, and all the green grass was burned.  Then the second angel blew his trumpet, and a great mountain of fire was thrown into the sea.  One-third of the water in the sea became blood, one-third of all things living in the sea died, and one-third of all the ships on the sea were destroyed.  Then the third angel blew his trumpet, and a great star fell from the sky, burning like a torch.  It fell on one-third of the rivers and on the springs of water.  The name of the star was Bitterness. It made one-third of the water bitter, and many people died from drinking the bitter water.  Then the fourth angel blew his trumpet, and one-third of the sun was struck, and one-third of the moon, and one-third of the stars, and they became dark. And one-third of the day was dark, and also one-third of the night.  Then I looked, and I heard a single eagle crying loudly as it flew through the air, “Terror, terror, terror to all who belong to this world because of what will happen when the last three angels blow their trumpets.”  Then the fifth angel blew his trumpet, and I saw a star that had fallen to earth from the sky, and he was given the key to the shaft of the bottomless pit.  When he opened it, smoke poured out as though from a huge furnace, and the sunlight and air turned dark from the smoke.  Then locusts came from the smoke and descended on the earth, and they were given power to sting like scorpions.  They were told not to harm the grass or plants or trees, but only the people who did not have the seal of God on their foreheads.  They were told not to kill them but to torture them for five months with pain like the pain of a scorpion sting.  In those days people will seek death but will not find it.  They will long to die, but death will flee from them!  The locusts looked like horses prepared for battle.  They had what looked like gold crowns on their heads, and their faces looked like human faces.  They had hair like women’s hair and teeth like the teeth of a lion.  They wore armor made of iron, and their wings roared like an army of chariots rushing into battle.  They had tails that stung like scorpions, and for five months they had the power to torment people.  Their king is the angel from the bottomless pit; his name in Hebrew is Abaddon, and in Greek, Apollyon—the Destroyer.  The first terror is past, but look, two more terrors are coming!  Revelation 8:6-9:12

  • You are probably all too familiar with the syndrome of “then”.
  • You were only four, and your big brother was going off to school; you were told that someday soon you would also get to go; you couldn’t wait until then.
  • You were 12 and bigger kids played on the teams…you would grow and then.
  • You were 14 and still had to wait to begin driving…wait until then.

We wait, anticipate, long-for-the-day, and then it comes.  We’re excited (for a while), and then we’re on to the next set of waiting, longing, and arriving.  In light of that then stuff, how do you feel about the End of Times…apocalypse?  This prophecy of Apocalypse, the End Time terrible tribulation, is not on many peoples’ front burner; not even “theologians”.  Truth be told, it is an icky kind of truth to tell.  After all, who wants to hear about a third of the earth’s waters, lands and creatures consumed by fire?  Some people believe…and tremble.  But, even then, one-third leaves you a two-out-of-three chance of surviving.  Good odds, even in a Las Vegas casino.

But this isn’t a roulette wheel, and we’re not talking about vacation time or silly games.  This subject is God’s impending righteous judgment of the world for sin.  And it won’t be a third of the world being judged; the last sentence of the text completes the equation…this bloodbath is only 1/3 complete…the other two-thirds are right on its heels.  That hammer WILL fall.  The only question is WHEN?

Many have taken a step onto that ledge of predicting the when of the then.  But that is as foolish as ignoring the coming of judgment.  When Jesus was teaching his followers about the end of times he told them they couldn’t know the “when” – that was in the Heavenly Father’s hands:

“However, no one knows the day or hour when these things will happen, not even the angels in heaven or the Son himself.  Only the Father knows.  Matthew 24:36

For You Today

I can think of a lot of ways I’d rather suffer than by fire, but the moment and circumstances of our judgment is not something we get to choose.  The good news is that we can choose to take a moment in time to change the outcome of that judgment.  That is the gift of Jesus’ death on the cross.

It may be a hard truth to contemplate, that sin will be judged, and every person is accountable to God, and guilty before God.  But, the Word of God declares this judgment is coming.  There are three “thirds”.  If you add them up, they total 100%.  All will be judged when God sets it in motion.  So, accept Christ now, and be spared the terror of judgment for your sins.  He has already paid the price of your redemption.  It’s your move.

You chew on that as you hit the Rocky Road; have a blessed day!

Going Out in a Blaze of Glory - Part 2

Friday, November 10, 2017
O my people, listen to my instructions.  Open your ears to what I am saying, for I will speak to you in a parable.  I will teach you hidden lessons from our past—stories we have heard and known, stories our ancestors handed down to us.  We will not hide these truths from our children; we will tell the next generation about the glorious deeds of the Lord, about his power and his mighty wonders.  For he issued his laws to Jacob; he gave his instructions to Israel.  He commanded our ancestors to teach them to their children, so the next generation might know them—even the children not yet born—and they in turn will teach their own children.  So each generation should set its hope anew on God, not forgetting his glorious miracles and obeying his commands.  Psalm 78:1-7(NLT)
This Psalm, or maskil, a Hebrew song sung in worship, sets the stage for proclamation of God’s ways through the retelling of humanity’s journey from Eden to the present.  Its purpose is to instruct the congregation in God’s Word so it will be passed-down through the generations.  As the final verse unfolds we see God’s wise challenge; this is not a rote-memory project, mechanically reciting the words to commit to memory.  Rather it is an experience that helps the Word come alive for young (and old) minds.  This is the awakening dawn of faith; hope gets set anew on God in each generation.
Yesterday’s devotion made a point about the reality of the cycle of generations.  Just by looking at the changing color of the leaves we understand that the fall announcement of winter’s coming is a perfect metaphor for what happens in the human family.  We start off as buds, mature into healthy green leaves, turn a blaze of colors, then…gone!  The leaves’ swan song is brilliant; they go out in a blaze of glory.  But it’s death, nonetheless.
I have to admit that at seventy I think a lot more now than before about this cycle and my responsibility in God’s plan to pass along the faith.  (When you’re raking up 54 gazillion leaves a day you have some time to think.)
In some ways we are no different in the 8th decade of life than the first; we still learn by example.  The pictures we paint for our children with our behavior are a powerful source of understanding how life is/can be lived.  The old saying do as I say, NOT as I do speaks true volumes when it comes to failure in communicating authentically.  We cannot convince our children and grandchildren to DO differently than we have simply by ordering it; behavior is more caught than taught!  Occasionally a child who is wise beyond her years might reason that a command makes sense; but, that would be a child well-beyond his years.  Mostly our children watch us, see what we do, and then proceed to make their way for good or bad based on our example.  Ripples do affect the lake!
And so the whole point of this Passing-Along-the-Faith-Psalm is to model living God’s ways daily, so our children grasp more fully what it means to be God’s child.  We are all flawed and make mistakes, but by the time our youthful green meets the cold snap of Fall’s change in color, the pattern of our discipleship ought to display a grand flourish of devotion to the will and way of God.  And so much, so that the generation immediately behind can’t help but see the loveliness of what God has built.
We usually express the growing older image with the metaphor of the color of our hair being snow on the roof; today I am officially changing it to:  I am in the season of going out in a blaze of glory.
I want my children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren to see God’s best; I want to offer them a memory of Godliness that’s authentic.  I want them to see the change God has made in me.  I want to be part of helping the next generation set their hope anew on the Lord Jesus.

For You Today

No matter how close you are to the going out part of going out in a blaze…while you’re breathing it is not too late to begin to let God set you on fire!
You chew on that as you hit the Rocky Road…have a blessed day!

Going Out in a Blaze of Glory - part 1

Thursday, November 9, 2017
Revelation 8:13 & 9:1-12(NLT)
The Book of Revelation records the final judgment of God.  Terror, scorpion-like stinging, torture, preferring death, but unable to find it, and then the bad news; it’s not over yet!
This is just a small portion of the description of what awaits those who reject God by refusing His Son, Jesus.  It’s not at all popular in any sense to speak about such things.  I understand that; it isn’t popular with me, either; yet, there it is…how can we avoid it?
Short answer:  we can’t!
The world as we know it will be changed by a violent judgment at the time of God’s choosing.  While we do not know the exact time or how much of what we read in Revelation is metaphor or literal, we do know that if it is literal, it’s horrible.  And, if it’s simply metaphorical, that doesn’t make it any less threatening.
These verses always come to my mind in fall.  The trees are turning bright, vibrant hues, announcing the beginning of the end of growing, and the time to harvest and prepare for winter.  The trees along our street were spectacular this year.  It’s easy to get drawn into the color show, and forget what’s really happening.  The leaves are dying, and are about to hit the ground (then get raked-up, and raked-up, and raked-up)!  The leaves’ swan song is brilliant; they go out in a blaze of glory.  But it’s death, nonetheless.
Leaves dying, letting go of the branches, falling to the ground and returning to the dust from which it came – does that raise any parallel thoughts for you?  It certainly reminds me of the liturgy I’ve spoken over too many gravesites:  ashes to ashes, dust to dust…!
And so…to the point…everything changes…leaves, seasons, lives, circumstances…all; with one exception:
I am the Lord, and I do not change…Malachi 3:6a(NLT)
That’s frightening and comforting.  It’s frightening to acknowledge if you recall that God always keeps his word; judgment is certain.
It’s comforting if you remember that God always keeps his word; forgiveness is also certain for those who trust in Christ’s atoning death.

For You Today

The most important thing in your life, past, present or future is something of which your Google assistant or IPhone calendar program will never remind you…to accept Christ and serve Him with all your heart, soul, mind and strength.  Haven’t you put that off long enough?  It’s fall…leaves and lives are hitting the ground.
You chew on that as you hit the Rocky Road…have a blessed day!
