Mustard Faith

Wednesday, August 2, 2023

Jesus said, “How can I describe the Kingdom of God?  What story should I use to illustrate it?  It is like a mustard seed planted in the ground.  It is the smallest of all seeds, but it becomes the largest of all garden plants; it grows long branches, and birds can make nests in its shade.”  Jesus used many similar stories and illustrations to teach the people as much as they could understand.  In fact, in his public ministry he never taught without using parables; but afterward, when he was alone with his disciples, he explained everything to them.  Mark 4:30-34

As a tourist or resident, walking the busy streets of New York isn’t a complete experience unless you get a hot dog from a street vendor.  And, of course, you must have mustard!  (If you eat it plain the STREET-EATS POLICE will get ya’).

As a former New Yorker who has eaten many of those “tube-steaks” I can attest to the oft-mused answer to the question about what gives those doggies their special flavor.  The answer is threefold simple…ambiance of the great city, a fair amount of soot, and taxicab tailpipe exhaust in the air[1].

Now, It's something of a leap from street-vendors selling New York hot dogs, to Jesus talking about mustard in Jerusalem; but there is a connection.  You do know there isn’t a person in the entirety of humanity who hasn’t tasted a hot dog.  In the same way everyone in the crowd to which Jesus spoke in that agrarian community knew mustard seeds as a “must” for the garden.  The image of the tiny seed, growing into a huge, tree-like bush, and how mustard’s pungent taste can enhance many foods, is common in any culture you care to name.  When you bite into anything coated with mustard, you know it’s there.  And that may be a hint of why Jesus used such a common image to help people understand God’s Kingdom.

The rapid growth of a tiny seed, coupled with its unmistakeable presence when matured, is an appropriate characterization of what God is able to do with us.  Consider the magnificent presence of Mother Teresa…as tiny a human being (physically) as you could ever meet, and quiet enough, personally, that you’d never expect a mustard kind of effect out of that little package.  But she drew the attention of the entire world to change the way children are treated.

Much as a mustard plant can double as a shade tree for a hot, weary bird or two, any tiny human being, whether isolated in the mountains of Cambodia, or living on the busy streets of Mubai, India, another face in the crowd of 21-million other people, God can grow some evidence of His Kingdom-presence to feed a leper, or put clothes on a street kid.  Small, common seeds…big, holy results!

For You Today

From the antiquities of the first century church we have what Paul told the belivers at Colossae:

Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people.  Colossians 3:23

You may not be called to work with children like Mother Teresa, or labor at a microscope to cure cancer, or gear-up with the astronauts to travel to distant stars.  But whatever God places in your hand, your heart, or your head, He has placed it, and you, there to make a difference.  Start as a mustard seed; grow to be a shade tree for some weary, wandering bird who needs to know what it’s like to come face to face with the Kingdom of God.

You chew on that as you hit the Rocky Road; have a blessed day!

To Conceive; Or Not to Conceive…a conundrum in an overly sexualized culture

Monday, July 17, 2023

You guided my conception and formed me in the womb.  Job 10:10

You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb.  Psalm 139:13

Just as you cannot understand the path of the wind or the mystery of a tiny baby growing in its mother’s womb, so you cannot understand the activity of God, who does all things.  Ecclesiastes 11:5

“I knew you before I formed you in your mother’s womb.  Jeremiah 1:5

The recent decision of the Supreme Court of the United States’ to overturn Roe v. Wade, and the ensuing public debate over abortion, once again stir the division between left-wing and right-wing political factions.  At the risk of further polarizing, I offer something of a contribution, not from a denominationally-mandated/politically-connected viewpoint…simply an interface of God’s Word with commitment to truth-telling, meant for the hard decisions of everyday life. We live in that kind of world; pragmatism confronts our surrender to Holy Scripture, and we must respond.

The debate (ongoing in history, and greatly inflamed on January 2, 1973, when Roe v. Wade – the decision to “legalize” abortion was passed)…this debate has widened the chasm between left and right, politically, and largely ignored the underlying divide that is the preceding cause of abortion, which could have been avoided, to wit:  We don’t follow God’s Word…and we end up in this mess, blaming each other, with the greatest harm being done to the unborn.

Note:  much of this message is excerpted from an article published October 8, 2021 in Perspective Magazine, a production of Good News  (Hereafter referred to as GN)

“There seems to be broad consensus that what exists within the womb is alive.  After all, it is growing and developing and even has a detectable heartbeat by the sixth week of pregnancy.

Some would say that a fetus is simply part of a woman’s body.  Having an abortion for some is the moral equivalent of removing a tumor or having plastic surgery.

Against this view is the fact that a fetus has different DNA than its mother.  If the fetus were simply part of the woman’s body, it would have the same identical DNA as the mother.  But of course the fetus has both the mother’s and father’s DNA, combined in a new and unique way, so it has a distinct life from that of the mother….Ultrasound technology shows us that a fetus has a life and existence of its own.  When it comes to the baby in the womb, the mother is dealing with a separate new life, which takes the question into a different moral category.

As reported by Emma Green in The Atlantic, activist Ashley McGuire recounts her own experience of pregnancy.  ‘When you’re seeing a baby sucking its thumb at 18 weeks, smiling, clapping,’ it becomes ‘harder to square the idea that that 20-week-old, that unborn baby or fetus, is discardable.’”(GN)

That is some (not nearly all) of the context of the debate, which, if conducted honestly, always includes three things:  science, faith, and emotional response.  What follows is a longer amalgam of the cause of why this debate (in my view) should be ended, and can be ended:

“This is where our overly sexualized culture does women a disservice.  Wpomen are often expected to engage in sexual relations without any form of commitment by the man, yet women are the ones who bear the consequences in terms of pregnacy.  This is fundamentally unjust.  But the answer is not to do away with the consequences by ending the pregnancy.  Rather the answer is to return to God’s plan for how we experience our sexual relationships.

God designed sexual relationships to be experienced within the context of marriage, which represents a commitment by the man to care and provide for his wife and any offspring that might be conceived.  Without that commitment, women and children are left unprotected and not provided for.  An irresponsible man simply expects the woman to have an abortion to eliminate the consequences of his irresponsibility.

Biblical theology teaches that men and women should reserve sex until marriage.  This protects the woman from being taken advantage of, and it prevents the vast majority of potential abortions by reserving pregnacy and childbirth to the safety of marriage, where bothe the woman and her child are provided for.  The CDC reports that 85 percent of abortions are obtained by unmarried women.

This approach to sexuality is counter-cultural.  Jesus and the apostles consistently invite us to live by a different set of values and assumptions than our culture does.  Such an approach also avoids the emotional pain, emptiness, and even the physical consequences of promiscuity.  It is the healthiest way to live.” (GN)

The Call to Live the Life Which God Intends for our Blessing

“Biblically, life is a gift of God.  God creates life and expects us to be good stewards of the life we are given.  While the mother and father play a crucial role in bringing new life into the world, ultimately, God is the one who forms life in the womb (Psalm 139:13-16).  Children are a gift from God (Psalm 127:3).  His purpose for our life dates back before our birth (Jeremiah 1:5).  God loves and values unborn children.

The issues around abortion are painful ones to wrestle with, and there are no easy answers.  We can prayerfully consider how God would want to use the challenging circumstances in which we find ourselves for our good, the good of others, and his glory.  We do not want to close the door on the possibility of miraculously answered prayer.

At the same time, women with undesired pregnancies provide an opportunity for the body of Christ to come around them with love and support that would make that pregnancy manageable.  We ought to be the hands and feet of Jesus in serving women and their unborn children with love and acceptance.  Often, that support needs to continue past the birth and through the baby’s childhood, particularly for single mothers and women in poverty.  The church’s pro-life ethic is not just during pregnancy, but extends through all of life.” (GN)

For You Today

The debate and level of emotions run deeper and much broader than these few pages of thoughts, primarily from the faith-centered pro-life position.  But these few things seem to be the most important issues upon which Christians cannot afford to abandon:

1.    We have a mandate to protect life at any stage, invitro, or ex….and that includes the mother, Christian believer, or not.

2.    Part of protecting and caring is found in listening…to simply trumpet pro-life platitudes won’t cut it for a single mom at three in the morning, when she’s only had two hours of sleep, the bills are unpaid, and her full-time job, with two other part-time things won’t even cover childcare and rent.

For our final word today, let’s listen to Albanian-born Mother Teresa as she accepted the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize for her work with children worldwide:

Abortion has become the greatest destroyer of peace, because it destroys two lives, the life of the child and the conscience of the mother.[1]

P.S.:  This has come closer to a full-size sermon, rather than a five-minute devotional, but the issue is too important.  (I’ve also not preached in the two weeks since I retired….so thanks for listening.  I’m tempted to ask if any church needs a supply preacher next week…but I wouldn’t do that ).

I do eagerly encourage you to read the Good News Article in its entirety…it is kind, well-presented, and a Scripture-based call to the church to embrace God’s will for His body to be like Jesus who came that we might have life, and that more abundantly.[2]

You chew on that as you hit the Rocky Road; have a blessed day!

2-20-17 Not Duplication; Transformation

Monday, February 20, 2017
And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you.  Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable.  This is truly the way to worship him.  Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think.  Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.  Romans 12:1-2(NLT)

Occasionally I cross paths with someone who is pushing hard on the idea that God, if he really exists, only wants copycats, endless reproductions of well-behaved nerds who are so nice they make Mr. Rogers and Big Bird look like gangsters.  People who have that kind of picture of what it’s like to be Christian have misunderstood Scripture bigtime!  That is, they misunderstood it if they actually read it, and aren’t just parroting-back something they heard; kind of like a copycat agnostic wannabe.

Actually that kind of thinking is a brand of fear that if you give into the notion God is a real person, and you bow your knee at His throne, you will somehow be swallowed up, have your personality ground-up like sausage and spit-out; you’ll be totally-unrecognizable, lost in a kingdom of rubber-stamp do-gooders who have to give up whatever’s fun, interesting or original.

The real truth about what God wants for every person is not duplication of someone else’s life, but transformation to the life of Christ, the most exciting, original, and, yes, fun life ever lived.

A case in point is Mother (now Saint) Teresa.  This was no copycat do-gooder!  She was a most gifted communicator of what real Christianity looks like:

In 1950 Teresa founded the Missionaries of Charity, a Roman Catholic religious congregation which had over 4,500 sisters and was active in 133 countries in 2012. The congregation manages homes for people dying of HIV/AIDS, leprosy and tuberculosis; soup kitchens; dispensaries and mobile clinics; children's- and family-counselling programmes; orphanages, and schools.[ii]

That resume is well-documented, and the mental image of a shriveled old woman who, by God’s design, became a driving force for life in this world, the very symbol of what God is about, is astounding.  She looked like the least powerful and least influential person you’d ever meet, yet she became God’s poster child for vitality.

And that voice for life spoke with authority.
How did all that happen?  She decided as a pre-teen her life belonged to God.  The rest of the story is a matter of daily serving and allowing God to transform her by everything she saw, heard and did.  God spoke into Teresa’s heart a life’s-passion for children and the plight of those in poverty.  Her life’s original and meaningful work flowed out of that heart’s response.
She listened; God led!

For You Today

Have you ever stood still long enough to listen – to really put away that fear of being swallowed-up – to hear the voice that will transform your life and speak the passion of a calling into your heart?
You chew on that as you hit the Rocky Road…have a blessed day!

Small Package - Big Message

Wednesday, May 18, 2016
Don’t do as the wicked do, and don’t follow the path of evildoers.  Don’t even think about it; don’t go that way.  Turn away and keep moving.  For evil people can’t sleep until they’ve done their evil deed for the day.  They can’t rest until they’ve caused someone to stumble.  They eat the food of wickedness and drink the wine of violence!  Proverbs 4:14-17(NLT)
If your father is the wisest man in the universe, and he tells you “don’t even think about it…keep moving” – well, it pays to heed the advice.  Solomon characterized the two ends of the spectrum of human character – the low end goes to evil continually, eating the food of wickedness and drinking the wine of violence.  The other, higher end of human character is that which aspires to Godly kindness.   Solomon told his son to watch out for the wicked…just turn and keep moving!
Mother Teresa of Calcutta made a lifetime of doing that.  In 1979 this humble sister of the Roman Catholic Order of the Missionaries of Charity received the Nobel Peace Prize for her worldwide orphanage work based in Calcutta.
She was born in Skopje, a little town that is part of Kosovo, the scene of much violence and human brokenness.  It would have been quite normal (and much easier) to sit with violence and wickedness, but Teresa walked the different, higher pathway, touching the lives of millions with the love of Christ.
Physically she was only 5’ tall, but it would be wrong to characterize this physically-diminutive woman as tiny in character or courage; she had the heart of a lion.
In 1988 she received an honorary degree from the University of San Diego and used her address to the crowd of 6,000 admirers like Solomon counselling his son about good and evil.  Here’s what she said:
"Abortion has become the greatest destroyer of peace, because it destroys two lives, the life of the child and the conscience of the mother," she said. " . . . Let us thank our parents for wanting us, for loving us, for giving us the joy of living. . . . You are priceless to God himself."
In her address, Mother Teresa also recited an anecdote to illustrate that every person, whether rich or poor, is significant in the eyes of God.
She talked about a desperate father who arrived at her mission with his only son, who was sick and dying. The doctor had given the child a prescription, but the father could not afford to purchase the medicine. As she was talking to the father, another man walked in with a basket full of medications. At the top of the pile was the medicine needed by the child.
Even with "millions and millions and millions of children in the world," God was still concerned with "that little child in the slums of Calcutta," said Mother Teresa.[2]
Remember that Mother Teresa was speaking to a graduating college crowd at the end of the 20th century, and she was doing so in California, to privileged young people steeped in the wine of personal privilege and rights, only a decade after Roe vs. Wade made abortion legal.  She was being honored, and could have basked in the sunshine of the moment; she chose to speak truth against the tide of cultural power!
Small woman; big message!

For You Today

As you move about in this world, keep it in focus that Solomon never told his son to ignore evil; he told him to turn from it.  That means move in the other direction, but it doesn’t mean take your eyes off it.
Like another wise man said:  Be harmless as doves and wise as serpents![3]
You chew on that as you hit the Rocky Road today…have a blessed day!
