The House of Wisdom

Tuesday, April 25, 2023

Wisdom has built her house; she has carved its seven columns.  She has prepared a great banquet, mixed the wines, and set the table.  She has sent her servants to invite everyone to come.  She calls out from the heights overlooking the city.  “Come in with me,” she urges the simple.  To those who lack good judgment, she says, “Come, eat my food, and drink the wine I have mixed.  Leave your simple ways behind, and begin to live; learn to use good judgment.”  Proverbs 9:1-6

The Proverb-writer has purposefully described the open-handedness of God in a universal invitation to gain wisdom.  There’s a great banquet of wisdom, and an army of messengers to spread the open offer to come close to the source.  It’s a house of life-giving good judgment; it’s a place to grow strong, leaving the simplicity of childish ways, for the strength of providing for others.

The “front door” of wisdom’s house arrived early-on in the introduction Solomon gave the Proverbs…where to begin if you wish to live a life of disciplined success, knowing how to do what is right, just, and fair.

Fear of the Lord is the foundation of true knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.  Proverbs 1:7

The foundation of wisdom’s house is fearing God…being reverent, respectful, and obedient to our Creator.  It is a small, but exceedingly-meaningful and important step to begin any journey.  If that step is in the wrong direction, the end of the journey will not be what one hoped.  That first step (surrendering every aspect of your life to reverencing God all through the journey) cannot be over-valued.

John was a retired Naval officer I met many years ago.  He attempted to side-step that first step.  He had seen much of the world and experienced many different cultures, but neglected Solomon’s advice about wisdom’s front door.  He had his own agenda, and that was his god.  Now, I do not say that with prejudice, or lightly; it’s simply an observable fact.  Whatever you do reveals that to which you give your allegiance.  If I go fishing 12 hours a day, it’s a reasonable assumption my behavior means I’m devoted to fishing.

A living, breathing, passionate thirst for God’s Kingdom indicates you have (at least) begun the journey towards wisdom.  The retired Navy man craved experiences that pleased him.  When we met he was ready to “experience” faith.  He went through the motions, profession of faith, baptism, and church membership.  But, for John, it was like a field trip, another experience.  Soon, that brush with religious activities became boring, and then turned hostile.  In the end he became a sad footnote on the evening news, committing suicide in a stand-off with police in front of the local K-Mart store.

I cried privately over John for months.  He had made the choice of a foolish and anguished moment, after trying to live life on his own.  In the end, experiences and the pleasure he thought they ought to bring him, just weren’t enough.

For You Today

It’s not enough to proclaim faith, get wet in a baptismal ceremony, have your name recorded on a church membership roster, and attend church regularly for the rest of your life.  Solomon did all of that, and also experienced every pleasure possible, and came to understood that real wisdom meant reverencing Almighty God.  Scripture tells us how we should respond to God, our maker:

“Be still, and know that I am God!  I will be honored by every nation.  I will be honored throughout the world.”  Psalm 46:10

You chew on that as you hit the Rocky Road; have a blessed day!

James the Just - Part 10 - Wisdom and Peace

Monday, August 26, 2019

But the wisdom from above is first of all pure.  It is also peace loving, gentle at all times, and willing to yield to others.  It is full of mercy and the fruit of good deeds.  It shows no favoritism and is always sincere.  And those who are peacemakers will plant seeds of peace and reap a harvest of righteousness.  James 3: 17-18

My friend, Charles, travelled some deep waters over the last several years supporting a longtime friend who recently lost the battle and gained heaven.  Charles, also a pastor, was doing pastoral care, up close and personal, and difficult.  He wrote Facebook posts to keep his friends and colleagues up on progress.  Listen to some of his thoughts:
Sometimes I wish life could return to normal! But then, I realize I have no idea what normal is anymore. Through all my Critical Incident Stress Management Training and Clinical Pastoral Care, we learn and teach folks that go through traumatic life experiences that life will never return to the normal that was. With each traumatic experience in life, we enter a “New Normal.” The problem most people have trying to cope, they are trying to find or live the normal that was, it is gone forever, we have to come to the realization that we are in a “New Normal” and learn to accept and embrace it. That is where our faith and trust in God shines through, because no matter what changes and “New Normals” we go through in life, God is always our constant, his love never changes and he will never leave or forsake us…So, I have to embrace what this “New Normal” is in the present and remember God is with us in and through it.[2]
It would be normal to be angry and bitter when life gets intensely unfair.  And while most believers would agree that letting go of bitterness is good, the question really is, HOW?  How in the world do we let go of something that holds onto us like the plague?
Listen to the promises in these two verses, and see if it makes sense…

Steep your life in God-reality, God-initiative, God-provisions.  Don’t worry about missing out.  You’ll find all your everyday human concerns will be met.  Matthew 6:33(TMNT)

I’m leaving you well and whole.  That’s my parting gift to you.  Peace.  I don’t leave you the way you’re used to being left—feeling abandoned, bereft.  So don’t be upset.  Don’t be distraught.  John 14:25(TMNT)

You let go by letting GodIN!  You surrender.
So, you LET GO…and then look what happens when you…LET GOD:
According to James (1.5) when you let go of the world’s ways, and ask God for His way, the wisdom to make good choices in your life begins to come your way.  So, it’s wisdom seed which God plants within us when we Let Go, and wisdom begins to change us.

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.  Proverbs 1:7

When God plants seeds of His wisdom in you because you open the ground of your life to Him, even in (and especially-in) the worst of times, that which develops is a person who has taken his stand publicly for Christ.  God helps you become a person of mercy and convictions, teaching you to be a person of integrity, convinced in the faith, living a life of loving the Lord…publicly and privately.
That sounds like quite a crop, doesn’t it?  Yet, that is only the showy tassel above the corn.  The real kernel – the real fruit of what grows from God’s seeds planted in your life, is what’s underneath all that…peace!
For You Today
Peace comes in an atmosphere of the Kingdom life, filled with wisdom.  When you chase it, demand it, or try to imitate it…it will slip through your fingers like a greased pig.
But when you go about seeking the kingdom of God, He plants seeds of peace in your life.  The crop that follows is that condition of peace in you, around you, and as a gift for others who know you, which becomes a blessing to God, your family, your community, and it passes all understanding in you!
That’s worth letting-go, so you can let-God.
You chew on that as you hit the Rocky Road; have a blessed day.

Measuring Strength

Monday, September 24, 2018

Just as Death and Destruction are never satisfied, so human desire is never satisfied.  Fire tests the purity of silver and gold, but a person is tested by being praised.  You cannot separate fools from their foolishness, even though you grind them like grain with mortar and pestle.  Proverbs 27:20-22(NLT)

When it comes to what humans want, nothing is ever enough!  If a child has a handful of M&M’s they want a truckload.  If they had access to a truckload, they’d wonder how they could get their hands on a fleet of trucks.  And so, it goes…
As adults the equation doesn’t change.  What does change is the size, complexity, and cost of the M&M pile.  It’s like the old rhyme:  There is no difference between men and boys…only in the size and cost of their toys.
Our proverb writer takes a step farther into this deep truth – a fool will remain a fool.  The question becomes:  How can you measure foolishness?  One test for measuring the strength of human integrity (which is the opposite of foolishness) is praise from other humans.  The proverb master suggests that if you want to know if you’re dealing with a fool, praise him.  A fool will respond to any kind of praise and crave more; those with integrity of character may accept a compliment, but it will not change them.
And a measure of strong character is always why we do what we do.  I am a preacher, called into the ministry of proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  It is not MY ministry, it is a gift with which Christ has blessed my life.  The call compels me to use my time, spiritual gifts, and whatever strength I have, to bring praise to the name of Jesus.  If I am to carry-out this calling with integrity it will NOT be by fishing for compliments on how well I do it; that’s not fulfilling my call – it is pandering my call to satisfy my foolish pride.
That sometimes gets dicey.  In social situations we remember mother’s advice to keep quiet if we don’t have something nice to say.  But some of us, particularly people pleasers, go beyond silence and praise others just to pump them up.  It’s a nice lie.
But what does that say about our moral center?  Should we offer (untrue) praise, just because it makes fools happy?
Well, this whole discussion can lead to a downward corkscrew of what constitutes flattery, and what is appropriate praise.  And the whole thing becomes a semantic morass of acceptable vs. unacceptable words.
Rather, applying the principle that foolishness is empty, and integrity with humility is everything, we should aspire to put praise – words from another flawed human – in its’ proper place and appreciate the thought, but never place enough weight on praise to make it our end goal.  The real goal of a human life is to please God, and fools cannot do that.

Fear of the Lord is the foundation of true knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.  Proverbs 1:7(NLT)

For You Today
To walk through this life as a wise person, and not a fool, is simply a matter of surrendering your life to pleasing God.  All else is foolishness, and it fails the test of measuring true strength!
You chew on that as you hit the Rocky Road; have a blessed day.

Oda Mae Brown and Ted Williams

 [1]
Wednesday, July 1, 2015
“Then if anyone tells you, ‘Look, here is the Messiah,’ or ‘There he is,’ don’t believe it.  For false messiahs and false prophets will rise up and perform great signs and wonders so as to deceive, if possible, even God’s chosen ones.  See, I have warned you about this ahead of time.   Matthew 24:23-25(NLT)
There are a lot of false offers of salvation out there.

In the 1990 movie “Ghost” Whoopi Goldberg played a reluctant psychic named Oda Mae Brown, who was drawn into a money, mayhem and murder plot.  She was a sham, a fraud, working the unsuspecting for a few dollars.  When the real deal of hell’s demons showed up, she was as helpless as a cast statue of Buddha.

When we were living in Florida more than 15 years ago I used to see advertisements all along the roadside where Astrologers and fortune tellers like Oda Mae claimed they could help you win it all in the Florida Lottery by predicting the numbers.  One time the Lotto rolled over for 17 straight weeks because nobody picked the winning numbers.  With all those astrological geniuses out there able to predict the winning numbers, wonder why?

Apparently there are those who still believe astrology, fortune-telling and other mysterious dark arts can predict your life’s pathway or keep you out of disaster.

Many scoff at the idea of astrologers and fortune-telling flim-flam artists.  They have confidence that science, with its computers, sophistication, and knowledge will come up with all the answers we need.

Boston Red Sox slugger and legend Ted Williams thought so.  Williams died in 2002, and his son signed off on having Williams’ body cryogenically frozen, so that someday, when science breaks through and conquers death, he and his son and youngest daughter will be reunited.  Ted Williams was looking for one last home run.

Meanwhile Ted’s body lies in a freezer, and allegations are that the son has been busy trying to make a zillion bucks selling clone material.

Why do we grasp at straws when it comes to gaining an edge on death and the future?  It’s the same reason the serpent had an easy mark with Eve – we are prone to deception. We grasp at anything to be independent from God.

If Oda Mae and Ted Williams can teach us anything, it’s:

The fool has said in his heart, ‘there is no God’.
Psalm 14:1(KJV)

And their example helps us understand why the wise know that:

Fear of the Lord is the foundation of true knowledge,
but fools despise wisdom and discipline.
Proverbs 1:7(NLT)

For You Today

The most incredible foolishness is available to anyone who wants to disown God and try to solve all of life’s problems on their own; just ask Oda Mae .

But for the wise, staying close to God and learning to be obedient to His ways are the source of all the real answers!
