Taking Your Meds

Thursday, April 14, 2022

For I pass on to you what I received from the Lord himself.  On the night when he was betrayed, the Lord Jesus took some bread and gave thanks to God for it.  Then he broke it in pieces and said, “This is my body, which is given for you.  Do this in remembrance of me.”  In the same way, he took the cup of wine after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant between God and his people—an agreement confirmed with my blood.  Do this in remembrance of me as often as you drink it.”  For every time you eat this bread and drink this cup, you are announcing the Lord’s death until he comes again.  1 Corinthians 11:23-26

Medication time is somewhat tedious if you're the giver, and the patient has four legs.

But our dog, Wellie, who is in a long term relationship with chicken (in any shape, size, original, or extra-crispy), gives me no problem with pills.  I could wrap a lethal tarantula the size of Cleveland in an ounce of chicken skin and he would swallow it like a vacuum inhales a feather.  Problem solved!

Overweight Shih-Tzus aside, few people enjoy taking their meds.  I could be biased…, but nonetheless, I’m one who utterly despises any medication, even though taking the stuff helps keep me breathing.  Of late, when my doctor asks me how I’m doing, I growl, FINE!  It seems to be effective in avoiding more trips to the pharmacy!

The apostle Paul’s words to the Corinthian believers sounds somewhat like a doctor prescribing:  Do this…it’s an announcement of the cross, a reminder of the resurrection, and strength for when Jesus comes back.  And, truth be told, this was a vitally-required spiritual medication for the Corinth church.  They were in dire need of healing for their selfish, hedonistic ways.  They had little appreciation for the worship moment of The Supper, which, in their case, had turned into a dinner-on-the-grounds pig-out.

There are some who, for whatever reason, view The Supper that way…a routine to be followed…ho-hum, pass the bread and Welch’s, please.  It goes down like the regimented swallowing of a pill, absentmindedly giving little or no thought to the holiness of the moment.  Somehow the magnitude of what’s going on at the table is lost, and (sadly enough) so is its’ grace-filled benefit.  It leaves no lasting aroma like the gift of Mary’s anointing of Jesus’ feet with expensive perfume, or savoring of the taste of what Isaac Watts called sorrow and love flow[ing] mingled down[1].

For You Today

Maundy Thursday of Holy Week, is a particularly poignant time for celebrating the coming cross, and eating the Holy Meal, remembering that passion of our Lord’s sacrifice.  Our eternal souls should not need the meal wrapped in chicken to go down gladly.  So, let’s go there allowing the Proverb writer the last word on taking our meds…

A cheerful heart is good medicine....  Proverbs 17:22a

You chew on that as you hit the Rocky Road; have a blessed day!

After Pentecost

When God, in the person of the Holy Spirit, moves into our hearts, it is just like what happened at Pentecost.  God showed up and things changed!  That Pentecost IN the church is best understood considering Jesus’ analogy (John 16) of the Vine and Branches.  Jesus is the True Vine, and we are his branches.  The branches are supposed to bear fruit.  What kind of fruit?  Note what Paul said:

But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.  There is no law against these things!  Galatians 5:22-23

So, this morning I would like for us to explore three results you will always see when the Spirit of God moves-in on Pentecost, and what that looks like afterward.  Let’s see the results after Pentecost.
Result #1 Spiritual Blessing
Fruit is a good thing.  We call it a spiritual blessing because that is what the Bible calls it.  Spiritual food – in this case the fruit of spiritual blessing – is supposed to satisfy the spiritual hunger you have for the things of God.
Food is a touchy subject for those of us in the “Weight Watcher crowd.”  The Good news is the fruit of the Spirit isn’t fattening or filled with cholesterol.  It has no additives, preservatives or carcinogens.  It won’t make you fat, grumpy, hyper or drunk.  It just might, however, cause people to view you with a new appreciation for goodness and graciousness.
THE FRUIT IS A GIFT FROM GOD

All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ.  Ephesians 1:3

Spiritual gifts are themselves gifts from God.  There are three things we should do about these gifts

a. Uncover them

Let love be your highest goal! But you should also desire the special abilities the Spirit gives—especially the ability to prophesy.  1 Corinthians 14:1

In the lives of many believers these spiritual gifts, or God-given abilities lie dormant.  We need to uncover, or re-discover them.

b. Understand them

Now, dear brothers and sisters, regarding your question about the special abilities the Spirit gives us. I don’t want you to misunderstand this.  1 Corinthians 12:1

Spiritual gifts aren’t spooky things you do in a trance.  The gifts of the Spirit involve teaching, helping, preaching, mercy and wisdom.  Spiritual gifts are not simply abilities, they are talents and strengths with which God has blessed you, and we need to use them for His glory.
For instance, if your gift is mercy, you might really enjoy helping people out of a tough spot.  However, even though you enjoy it, your enjoyment isn’t the point; the person being helped learning to praise God for His answers is the point!  The fact that you enjoy being merciful is one of the little side benefits a believer who is willing to be used of God experiences.
Understanding the gifts means investigating what God wants you to do, and then trusting Him to put the power to do that very thing into operation.

c. Use them

And the same is true for you. Since you are so eager to have the special abilities the Spirit gives, seek those that will strengthen the whole church. 1 Corinthians 14:12

To strengthen the church is to build up others.  Our gifts are for the building of the Kingdom of God.  That means winning the lost and teaching the saved.
There is (at least) one other application to the building up of God’s people besides edification; there is reclamation.  Sheep who have strayed need to be gathered back into the fold.

Dear brothers and sisters, if another believer is overcome by some sin, you who are godly should gently and humbly help that person back onto the right path. And be careful not to fall into the same temptation yourself.  Galatians 6:1

There is not a more difficult, nor a more neglected activity in the body of Christ than the reclaiming of saints who have wandered away.  Many of them have been sent away by grouchy, temperamental wolves among the sheep.
It is hard to be delicate about this matter.  However, those of us who are faithful have no right to be the cause of someone else’s loss of faith.  Jesus said it would be better for me to have a gigantic grinding stone tied around my neck and thrown into the Uwharrie River, than to offend a little one.  He was talking about making certain that we are kind, gentle and gracious.  Some folks have all the graciousness of a bulldog.  When we are offensive in spirit or personality it sends the opposite message of what Christ intended,.
GENUINE HOLY SPIRIT FRUIT IS A GRACIOUS FRAGRANCE
You can tell quickly when you’re around someone who is indwelt and controlled by God’s Holy Spirit.  There is an atmosphere, an aura of Christ likeness.  In my first pastorate out of seminary, McIntosh’s biggest industry was the Huff Orange Groves.  Most of the orange grove acreage was on Orange Lake.
Every Easter we would have a community sunrise service in a little clearing overlooking the lake.  At 5 o’clock in the morning, when you turned onto the dirt path, surrounded by orange blossoms, there was no mistaking that you were in Huff’s groves.  The fragrance was overwhelmingly sweet.  The lake was still, and the air was crisp.
It is like that with joy, peace and gentleness; there is a sweet fragrance of God all around people who belong to Him.  You may not be able to adequately describe it for a non-believer.  But you know it when you’re near it, that spiritual blessing.
Result #2 Numerical Blessing
Some people say that Methodists are too hung up on numbers.  If there’s more than one, we’ll count it, put it in a new class, and report the stats to the Holy Land in Charlotte.  The principles of bearing fruit help us understand that fruit always multiplies.  It begins with the seed.  Spiritually speaking, Jesus is the seed of Christianity.  Paul called Jesus the first fruits of resurrection[1].  You don’t get a fruit without a blossom, or branch, or vine, or seed.  It all begins with the seed; what Jesus was in seed, we are to be in fruit.
The life of Jesus was filled with the seed of joy.  You could find him at weddings, parties.  He ate with the down and outers, and the up and outers.  Children came to Jesus.  Sinners were forgiven.  People were healed.  That was the seed.
Jesus invested his whole life and ministry in the lives of twelve men, and a few women that followed.  He was the seed; they became the branches that would bear fruit.  Now, the law of the harvest demands that you always must sow the seed to bear the fruit.  It also decrees that you reap later than you sow, and you always reap more than you sow.  But you will definitely reap WHAT you sow!  Jesus reaped spiritual fruit in the disciples who followed him, because his seed was love, joy, peace, etc...
Numerical blessing applies to virtually every discipline of life.  When the Spirit of God moves into the heart of man, the harvest will be plentiful.  Our duty is simply to open the gate, let Him move in.
Result #3 Physical & Mental Wholeness

A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit saps a person’s strength.  Proverbs 17:22

Fruit sustains life.  A balanced diet will provide for the physical or nutritional needs of life, which also affects our mental, or emotional state of wholeness.  If there is one thing sorely needed in our culture, it is balance.
Balance includes our relationships, and how we treat others.  A woman told the evangelist Billy Sunday that she had a bad temper, but that it was all over in a minute.  He replied, so is a shotgun; but it blows everything to pieces.
In the list of spiritual fruit is goodness.  This is not so much the act of being good or behaving oneself.  It is the existential condition of inherent goodness, with outward manifestations that affirm the inner being.  Huh?  Really!  It means as William Barclay has written, Good, through and through, and everybody can see it.  How does this come about?  It is a gift from the Spirit of God.
We need to be careful to allow God’s Spirit to reign in all areas of our lives.  If you struggle with temper, grouchiness, or a critical spirit, that means that you are reigning in that area of your life.  God wouldn’t act that way.
Can you change?  Yes, with the Spirit’s help.
Mental and physical wholeness are connected.  I know a doctor who refers to treating the physiological conditions as the hardware of this computer we call a body.  The emotional state is our software, our programming.  They are so connected that this doctor has an MD, and a Ph.D.  He treats the hardware if you’re physically sick, and the software if you’re emotionally unstable.  In the same way, the Spirit of God wants to deal with every area of your life.
The Bible describes heaven and the fountainhead of this spiritual fruit we’ve been talking about.

On each side of the river grew a tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, with a fresh crop each month. The leaves were used for medicine to heal the nations.  Revelation 22:2

The healing of the nations is a description of perfection in spiritual fruit.  A perfect state of love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance.  Some people in this auditorium are going to partake of that fruit.

Blessed are those who wash their robes. They will be permitted to enter through the gates of the city and eat the fruit from the tree of life.       Revelation 22:14

You can go to the harvest.  The one command that you must obey to have a right to the tree of life is what the Scripture calls being born again!
When you are born again, the Holy Spirit of God comes into your life and gives spiritual blessing, numerical increase, along with physical and mental wholeness.  This is the meaning of Pentecost.
God’s Spirit came to birth the church, and after Pentecost the Spirit now lives in us to bear Kingdom fruit!
In the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; Let the church say “Amen”!

Having the Mind of Christ

Monday, February 4, 2019

Yet when I am among mature believers, I do speak with words of wisdom, but not the kind of wisdom that belongs to this world or to the rulers of this world, who are soon forgotten.  No, the wisdom we speak of is the mystery of God—his plan that was previously hidden, even though he made it for our ultimate glory before the world began.  But the rulers of this world have not understood it; if they had, they would not have crucified our glorious Lord.  That is what the Scriptures mean when they say, “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love him.”  But it was to us that God revealed these things by his Spirit.  For his Spirit searches out everything and shows us God’s deep secrets.  No one can know a person’s thoughts except that person’s own spirit, and no one can know God’s thoughts except God’s own Spirit.  And we have received God’s Spirit (not the world’s spirit), so we can know the wonderful things God has freely given us.  When we tell you these things, we do not use words that come from human wisdom. Instead, we speak words given to us by the Spirit, using the Spirit’s words to explain spiritual truths.  But people who aren’t spiritual can’t receive these truths from God’s Spirit.  It all sounds foolish to them and they can’t understand it, for only those who are spiritual can understand what the Spirit means.  Those who are spiritual can evaluate all things, but they themselves cannot be evaluated by others.  For, “Who can know the Lord’s thoughts?  Who knows enough to teach him?”  But we understand these things, for we have the mind of Christ.  1 Corinthians 2:6-16(NLT)

Inside stories are a puzzle to those on the outside.  It may be something simple, like a 4-digit code to get in your mower shed; you’re the one who owns the lock, so you know that simple code.  Outsiders have to use their own mower.
Those who have become God's children through faith in Christ also understand the family ways and the inside stories
If you had ever had the opportunity to sit down to dinner with my Mom and Dad, and part of the meal is pickled red cabbage, you’d have thought my mother lost her mind.  The reason is an inside family joke.  Years ago, someone mispronounced it while setting it out on the table.  Since that moment Mom has not been able to look at "Red Garbage" without breaking up.
Inside jokes are what make family reunions great.  You tell the same story for the 1,800th time, and it is enjoyed better every year.  There is much laughter in the family of God.  And God approves!  In fact, He created us with a built-in capacity and need for joy!

A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit saps a person’s strength.  Proverbs 17:22(NLT)

The mind of Christ is an inside-the-family concept.  Simply expressed, it is thinking like Jesus, so you can be more like Jesus.  Now, if that’s all you have of the story, you’re liable to miss the key ingredient, the code that unlocks this shed.  It is only by the Spirit of God that you receive the mind of Christ.  The Apostle said it clearly – NO human mind has imagined what’s on God’s mind!  You just cannot read the Bible, weigh its advice, and decide to have the mind of Christ.  It is a gift to those who give their hearts to Christ.
Paul was a brilliant man, schooled at the feet of Israel’s best scholars…yet he was as lost as a goose in a snowstorm when it came to understanding God’s simplest blessing – the Gospel.  He missed it like a man on a pogo stick trying to jump up to the moon.  But when he finally surrendered his will, his life, energy, and thoughts to God, everything fell into place.
If you read the account of Paul’s surrender to Christ in Acts 9, you find he went blind.  Once he committed his life to the Lord, God sent him to the home of a believer named Ananias.  This man prayed for Paul, and the scales of blindness fell off his eyes; he then saw God’s plan clearly.  Paul now had the mind of Christ spreading over his consciousness like a warm friend’s embrace.  In obedience, Paul lived with that understanding the rest of his life.
For You Today
The mind of Christ makes big changes.
You ready for that?
You chew on that as you hit the Rocky Road; have a blessed day.

Flamingled

Thursday, June 21, 2018
A cheerful heart is good medicine,
but a broken spirit saps a person’s strength.  Proverbs 17:22(NLT)
My daughter Jen and I have a war (of sorts) going on.  It’s been raging for some years now.  It has to do with flamingos.  More than a decade ago I found out that one of the reasons she was glad to move from Florida to North Carolina is flamingos…she despises the little plastic pink ones people put in every Florida front yard.  I made the mistake of agreeing that I wouldn’t ever put one in my yard (but then I don’t like any statues or fake deer, flamingos or Santa blow-up decorations).  On my next birthday, that ruthless daughter gave me a plastic flamingo the size of Chicago.  I retaliated one Sunday morning after they left for church by lining her driveway with about two dozen of the despicable birds.
I thought that had been the A-Bomb of the bird war, but a few years later I got a present that was wrapped in flamingo paper; inside was two strings of Christmas lights…each light a little pink plastic birdy-thorn in my saddle.  And so, a year ago for her May birthday she got no flamingos…just a regular present.  That was me setting the trap.  Shortly after, with my unsuspecting daughter certain she’d won the war with the Christmas-light flaminglow fiasco, I gave her a coffee mug, complete with a flamingo on the inside…the one you couldn’t see if the mug was full of coffee, but would be staring at you with a big pink eye as you drained the cup.  Ha!  Jen said thanks by getting me a desk paper weight from their Florida vacation….flamingos on a Florida island!
And then there was Father’s Day last week.  We had offered to bring the grilled sausages for the family gathering.
When we arrived at Jen’s house after church, sausages and buns in hand, we were invited to the kitchen counter buffet, complete with flamingo plates, cups with flamingo-topped swizzle sticks, napkins that invited Let’s Flamingle, and a special pool floatee-thing for my iced tea…a pink flamingo floatee!  The day was a flaming, flamingo, festival!  I told her I had three words for her:  I GIVE UP!
Now, it may sound an awful lot like the flamingo war is absolutely the worst example of a cheerful heart medicine.  But that’s exactly what it has been like for me (and I expect for Jen too).  I’m not sure I’ve laughed harder, nor been more joyfully-surprised at the resourceful thoughtfulness it takes to go one-up in this pink bird-slinging contest.
I’m wondering how to get a real flamingo into a bathing suit and have it sit on Jen’s porch writing its memoirs on an iPad.  I wonder…
For You Today
Well, it doesn’t have to be flamingos, exactly…but what connects you with someone in your life that takes a little thought, trouble, and going out of the way to make their day?  If you don’t have that, may I recommend a pink, floatee-thing for their iced tea?  I can let you have one real cheap.
You chew on that as you hit the Rocky Road; have a blessed day.
