Staying On Track

Tuesday, September 8, 2020

My suffering was good for me, for it taught me to pay attention to your decrees.  Your instructions are more valuable to me than millions in gold and silver.  Psalm 119:71-72

Let’s face it, there ARE times when God the Father takes his children to the woodshed!  We tend to think of “Father” in terms of our protector, provider, and closest friend; rightly so.  But there is more to parenting than planning birthday parties, outings to the state fair, and putting bread on the table.  If discipline is never on that table you wind up with an undisciplined, immature, unmannered, and unprincipled child in adult skin.  Repeat that enough and you have a culture that respects nothing, demands everything, and sits in a pool of tears because they don’t get what they wanted.

Uhhhh…you have 2020.

I received discipline as a child.  It wasn’t so much physical discipline (although there was that at times), but Mom and Dad’s kind of discipline warned me about the consequences that went along with my choices.  And when the choices I made fell in the unwise, or downright rebellious column, the consequences were no surprise.  It was as the name for this devotional blog suggests, a Rocky Road out there, and, so, Russell, here are the good ways to avoid those rocky places.  And when you can’t help but go through them, here’s how to ask for the right kind of help to navigate life’s tougher pathways.

No discipline, physical, mental, financial, or even the imprisonment of time-out is welcomed at the time.  But often we can look back and see the value the discipline has had in helping form our future choices, helping us stay on-track.

One such time for me was a watershed of life’s choices that placed me on the right track with God.  As a young man, I was busy with young children to raise, a wife that loved me, and a good job.  Add the chores of taking care of a house, two cars and assorted schedule management, and my life was full.  It was full of busy days, doing things, making money, going here and there…and totally empty of purpose.

Our lives had taken an upswing in direction, being newly-welcomed into a loving church where Scripture was held in high regard, modeled by leaders who understood what the Apostle James meant about living the Word, not just hearing it*.  But there was still some piece of this puzzle of how to do something with my life that would match a growing hunger to please God.

Looking back on that time (aided with the benefit of 40+ years of hindsight), I can see it was God, the Holy Spirit, Who was reminding me of God’s call to preach.  It was a calling I’d received (and tried my best to ignore) so long ago as a boy.  But at the time it just seemed like a gnawing emptiness in the pit of my stomach; it was a sense that if I didn’t do something about serving God I would somehow dry up on the inside and melt into the landscape like dried leaves blow away from the life-giving tree each fall.  It wasn’t as much selfishness, or rebellion towards my Creator, as it may have been a lack of understanding, or confidence, the kind of faith in God to take that first step as when God wanted Abraham to go to the mountain.  I was being tested, and, in fear I had been running from God.  I was off-track, and it was painful to feel so alienated from God’s loving presence.

That alienation is what we would commonly call the woodshed, God’s way of getting our attention so He can steer us back on-track to a life planned for us that is less about Him being Sovereign, and much more about Him wanting the best for His children…even us stubborn ones.

For me, hopping back on the right track took nearly 20 years from the time of my calling, until the day I finally put my pride and insecurity aside and, in a broken, halting prayer of that day, told God I was His.  I would do whatever He wanted, wherever He wanted, and with whatever He placed in my hands…I would follow Him; I was HIS!

There have been bumps along the way (it’s still a Rocky Road, remember), but the growing sense of peace in my soul has met each stone or boulder with just the right amount of faith for each day.  That’s what the right track feels like when you let God steer the engine!

So, is it just suffering?  Or is it suffering that is good for you?  Is God showing you where you jumped the track?  It’s not too late to get back on if you’re still breathing.

You chew on that as you hit the Rocky Road today.  Have a blessed day!

God's Plans

Friday, August 28, 2020

All this happened so they would follow his decrees and obey his instructions.  Psalm 105:45

Doctrine (what you believe about what you value) can be tricky, and it runs a wide path through culture; as wide as the different opinions in a church meeting on what color the new carpet in the foyer ought to be.

From this one text in Psalms it is easy to see why some people imagine the doctrine of predestination to mean God moves people around in despotic manner – they have little or no choice about the outcome of their lives; God’s plan is final, and that’s it!  While that is a supra-fatalistic view of God’s intervention in human existence, the polar-opposite doctrine has God in a hands-off mode.  That was a doctrine quite popular a few generations ago.  The picture is of God, the Creator, once having made the universe and all it holds, somewhat like a master clock-maker assembles a grandfather clock, the final move being to gently push the pendulum to get things started, now takes His hands off the masterpiece and lets it run as it will, for good, bad, or indifferent.

This is essentially the debate which has been carried on since Job sat in ashes and grief over the misery in his life, while his three friends tried to force their theology on the sufferer.  The question hasn’t been settled throughout the formation of Jewish understanding, nor the last two thousand years of Christian discipleship.  It’s a wide space between the fringes of God totally ignoring us as opposed to God holding us so tight that we have no say in the matter.  Is it free will, or frozen-stiff in God’s will?  Here is the Apostle Paul’s signature verse on the topic:

And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.  For God knew his people in advance, and he chose them to become like his Son, so that his Son would be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters.  And having chosen them, he called them to come to him.  And having called them, he gave them right standing with himself.  And having given them right standing, he gave them his glory.  Romans 8:28-30

My theological understanding, after puzzling the jumble of thoughts on this issue the last 50+ years, is somewhere near the middle of the fringes.  It would be hard to keep a straight face and say there’s no such thing as free will; there are too many if’s, but’s, and perhaps passages in Holy Scripture to deny human will is autonomous, a free-agent, so-to-speak.  It would be equally naïve (or a downright assault on truth) to declare that our human autonomous will is not influenced, and ultimately accountable-to God’s will.  He is, after all, the Sovereign God, Who created us!

So, do we have free will?  Or are our lives predestined?  Well, in a word, YES!

Now, before you start planning my execution for taking the 5th, and bailing on this little question, I really do mean “yes” – both are real.  We do have free will, and God, in His sovereign will, has some wonderful plans for our lives He will bring about.

And that works the way I heard Dr. Herschel Hobbs describe it as he led us in a small group Bible study in 1979.  He said[1]:

Predestination works like an election.  God and the devil are having a dispute over your soul.  The devil casts his vote to destroy every part of who you are.  The Lord casts His vote to redeem you and give you eternal life with Him in glory.  It’s one-fer, one-ag’n; the election’s a tie.  And the only way to settle it is YOU get to cast the tie-breaking vote!

Not bad theology for a country boy with a PhD!

The Psalmist said God arranges and does stuff so we will follow God’s commands and will.  It’s a smart thing to listen to God’s plans (read and study Scripture); in the long run it will head off a long list of mistakes and heartaches.

You chew on that as you hit the Rocky Road today.  Have a blessed day!

Turn Back ... and Live!

Tuesday, October 30, 2018

“Do you think that I like to see wicked people die? says the Sovereign Lord.  Of course not!  I want them to turn from their wicked ways and live.  However, if righteous people turn from their righteous behavior and start doing sinful things and act like other sinners, should they be allowed to live?  No, of course not!  All their righteous acts will be forgotten, and they will die for their sins.  “Yet you say, ‘The Lord isn’t doing what’s right!’  Listen to me, O people of Israel.  Am I the one not doing what’s right, or is it you?  Ezekiel 18:23-25(NLT)

I’ve heard it so often, and I expect to hear it again whenever the news reports:
·      some financial ruin, or a gruesome diagnosis, or …
·      some violent act like a mugging or hate crime, like last week’s shooting.
It goes something like:  How could God let this happen to innocent people?
There are a myriad of responses we could trot-out, but there are two ringing loudly in my bones today on the heels of another deranged man killing eleven people, and the ensuing accusations and counter-blame attempts:
1.      There are no totally innocent people.
2.      While God appears to be passively standing-by and passively letting it all happen, nothing could be farther from the truth.

About innocence in the human family

The apostle Paul, quoting the Old Testament prophets said that, among humans, there are none righteous.[2]  Paul, as well as traditional Christian theology (not to mention common sense) tell us we have inherited, and respond to Adam’s sinful nature.  That is why God’s acceptance of penitent sinners is based on mercy through His grace and mercy[3] not on our behavior.  Thank God for that!  It is our behavior which gets us into trouble; Christ’s behavior of sacrifice on the cross is what gets us out!

About God being a passive by-stander

It’s exactly the opposite; sovereign God is not only our Creator, He is the sustainer of all life and active in all that happens.  Just consider these few verses:

…“O Lord, God of our ancestors, you alone are the God who is in heaven. You are ruler of all the kingdoms of the earth. You are powerful and mighty; no one can stand against you!  2 Chronicles 20:6(NLT)

Then I heard again what sounded like the shout of a vast crowd or the roar of mighty ocean waves or the crash of loud thunder:  “Praise the Lord!  For the Lord our God, the Almighty, reigns.  Revelation 19:6(NLT)

To reign as a sovereign means you’re actively orchestrating the life and order of your subjects.  God, omniscient, understanding and aware of everything that has happened, is happening, and will happen is the very definition of supervising His Creation … and with a very detailed hand!  When the early stages of man’s development took a wrong turn, God turned things around.  Nimrod, King of Babel, decided to succeed from the union of God with man, and built him a monument…God did not stand passively by:

But the Lord came down to look at the city and the tower the people were building …  Come, let’s go down and confuse the people with different languages.  Then they won’t be able to understand each other.”  Genesis 11:5-7(NLT)

Ultimately God, Sovereign ruler of the universe and all that exists is orchestrating life and the times and events of mankind to suit His plans for what is His!  Like it or not we must be ready to cooperate with that plan.
To do otherwise is beyond foolish.
For You Today
Do you have plans for today?  What in those plans convinces you that you are cooperating with God’s sovereign will?
You chew on that as you hit the Rocky Road; have a blessed day.
