I Believe in ME

Friday, November 23, 2018

When the king heard what was written in the Book of the Law, he tore his clothes in despair…. So Hilkiah the priest, Ahikam, Acbor, Shaphan, and Asaiah went to the New Quarter of Jerusalem to consult with the prophet Huldah.  She was the wife of Shallum son of Tikvah, son of Harhas, the keeper of the Temple wardrobe.  She said to them, “The Lord, the God of Israel, has spoken!  Go back and tell the man who sent you, ‘This is what the Lord says:  I am going to bring disaster on this city and its people.  All the words written in the scroll that the king of Judah has read will come true.  For my people have abandoned me and offered sacrifices to pagan gods, and I am very angry with them for everything they have done.  My anger will burn against this place, and it will not be quenched.’  2 Kings 22:11, 14-17(NLT)

Josiah became Judah’s king in when he was still a child.  This chapter records that he was a very godly man all his life.  When he was only 26 the scrolls of God’s Word were discovered during a renovation of the temple.
(Hear that again:  God’s Word … hidden … in God’s House!).
The king was mortified and began an investigation as to how to make things right; he’d discovered (by reading this hidden Word of God) the whole nation had forsaken their LORD and were in danger of the mother of all woodshed experiences.  God was not pleased with a nation that worshipped themselves.
I’m pretty sure nothing has changed in that department!  When God says His anger will burn, and it will not be quenched, there’s nothing to doubt about how God sees the sin of paganism.
That said, we must take a look at ourselves; there is a neo-paganism in the land.  Current surveys show the largest, and fastest growing demographic in our land is aptly-dubbed the nones.  These are people who self-identify as atheists or agnostics, as well as those who say their religion is “nothing in particular….[2]
While the surveys include atheism, the “belief” that there is no god, no “higher power”, that is the smallest part of the problem, and always has been; atheism is whistling in the dark, hoping there isn’t a god who’s really in charge!  Scripture tells us God has imprinted His image on our souls, and so we know He is there, and we are accountable to Him.
When it comes down to the rest of the demographic, besides atheism (which amounts to around 3.1% of Americans[3]) the other 24% who have left church in the rearview mirror are unsure, or disenfranchised.  The most common and rising explanation you hear these days is:  I’m very spiritual; just not religious.
Understanding what that buzz-phrase really means is:  I’d rather worship myself; I believe in me, my rights, my personal self-esteem, my time, my choice.
And that’s pretty much it; the new-paganism in the land is worshipping other than the one-true-living-God – it’s the god-within.  This is not anything new; in fact, it’s rather ancient (so old as to be quite boring when you hear it again):

“How you are fallen from heaven, O shining star, son of the morning!  You have been thrown down to the earth, you who destroyed the nations of the world.  For you said to yourself, ‘I will ascend to heaven and set my throne above God’s stars.  I will preside on the mountain of the gods far away in the north.  I will climb to the highest heavens and be like the Most High.’  Isaiah 14:12-14(NLT)

Of course, Scripture is giving us a peek into Lucifer’s mind (and his eventual fate, fallen!)
Choosing to turn your back on God’s prior claim on your life is a matter of sin.  Any attempt to explain why a person chooses to reject worship is a further compounding of that sin.  I am not saying it is wrong to question, or even to leave a group because there is a lack of worship, or faithfulness inherent in that group.  However, it is sinful to decide to just delete from your life assembling with other believers for worship, prayer, fellowship, witness and supporting the mission of Christ, when Scripture clearly indicates that is counter to God’s will for all humans.  It is neo-paganism at its worst!

And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near.  Hebrews 10:25(NLT)

In a culture gone a little bonkers over the human rights thing, we have managed to confuse the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, as the right to think we’re in charge; and that isn’t right …
For You Today
I have a little prayer I say at the beginning of the day; join me?
God, YOU are God, and I am not.  Amen.

Lenten Walk - Part 19

Tuesday, March 13, 2018
If you think you are standing strong, be careful not to fall.  The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience.  And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand.  When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure.
1 Corinthians 10:12-13(NLT)
Paul’s wild-child in the faith was the Corinthian bunch, a church planted in a garden that was a rampant sinful culture; it was sexually-charged, superstitious, arrogant and unrestrained.  That certainly sounds like the 21st century in the good ol’ USA!
The letters Paul wrote to the church at Corinth were heavy on correcting their wrong ideas about how to live the life of a disciple of Jesus Christ.  And in these three short sentences we find some of the greatest (and sometimes most misunderstood) advice to any believer endeavoring to live the life in-Christ when residing in a culture that is a moral cesspool.

There is a caution:

Paul says that human nature is now what it has always been; what is written in Scripture about those who fell into sin is there to teach and remind us of just how powerful and insidious moral failure can be.  In the current day we should not need such words; our culture would probably make 1st century Corinthians blush!

There is a reminder:

Paul reminds his fellow believers that God is faithful, and will not allow a temptation in your life greater than you are able to withstand.  This is one of those verses that is so-often misunderstood.  Sometimes temptation comes that is way over our pay grade.  That doesn’t mean God has laid-down his faithfulness; it usually means we have wandered off the straight path and gone looking for forbidden fruit.

There is a light:

Notice Paul didn’t write in his letters to the believers IF you are tempted; he used the more definite WHEN you are tempted.  Temptation is a little like trials and tribulations.  You’re either in the middle of one, just come out of one, or, brace yourself because you’re about to bump-into one.
The great reformer Martin Luther analogized temptations as the picture of birds circling overhead.  His teaching was that you cannot help it if they land on your head, but you certainly have something to say about them building a nest up there.
Temptation is a fact of life in the fallen human race.  But Paul points to the light that God will always provide a sure path to defeat temptation.  The light Paul offers in his advice to the Corinthians is equipped with the switch, so-to-speak, that is in our hands.  God will show you the way out IF you’re ready to cooperate with the Spirit and do the right thing.  If you’re pre-disposed to claiming victim status – that you can’t resist – the temptation is too strong, what you’re really saying is that Christ in you is a lie, and God’s promise is untrue.
My dear Christian friends, save the cards, letters, and emails about the power of addictions and the pitiful nature of those with poor genetic inheritance; temptation is an offer of sin against Almighty God, whom you have promised to worship and obey.  Like you, I have a carnal nature within that feels the pull of temptation.  I also have the Spirit within fighting against that nature.  Which is going to win that spiritual war going on?  The answer is much like the owner of two fighting dogs – the dog that is equipped to win is the one the owner feeds.  Feed your temptation/addiction/genetic-disposition with its cravings…or feed your spirit that which dwells on a higher plane.
For You Today
1 Hand-PenGod has promised to provide a pathway through, around, or over the temptations that come your way.  The choice comes down to the straight and narrow, but sometimes really hard way…or the one our culture offers.  The choice is always ours!

New Branches; Old Trees

Tuesday, August 22, 2017
Notice how God is both kind and severe.  He is severe toward those who disobeyed, but kind to you if you continue to trust in his kindness.  But if you stop trusting, you also will be cut off.  And if the people of Israel turn from their unbelief, they will be grafted in again, for God has the power to graft them back into the tree.  You, by nature, were a branch cut from a wild olive tree.  So if God was willing to do something contrary to nature by grafting you into his cultivated tree, he will be far more eager to graft the original branches back into the tree where they belong.
Romans 11:22-24(NLT)
The metaphor of garden goes back to the creation.  Adam and Eve were placed in Eden and instructed to be fruitful.  The whole point of being part of God’s creation is to be productive as God himself watches over everything He created:
The LORD God placed the man in the Garden of Eden to tend and watch over it.
Genesis 2:15(NLT)
Paul called himself the Apostle to the Gentiles.  An “apostle” is literally a messenger, one who speaks for God.  In writing to the believers at Rome he took care to explain that they needed to keep a watch on their attitude.  The apostle pointed to God’s chosen nation, Israel, and how their disobedience and arrogance caused them to be outside of God’s will.  The Gentiles were considered a new branch grafted into the old tree.  This was a warning that just as an old olive tree in a grove can become unproductive, and is removed by the gardener, in the same way a disobedient and unproductive new branch of people can be removed from God’s vineyard.
The New Testament church is coming up on its 2,000th birthday.  That is about the same age Israel boasted during the time Paul lived and warned the Gentiles about becoming stodgy and full of themselves with pride.  That makes this warning is as poignant today as it was then!  The whole issue is of trust.  Paul’s warning was about how God will cut off those who stop trusting Him, but be very kind to all who trust Him fully.  So, it’s never a matter of past tense (what you have done for God); it’s a matter of present tense – whether you are trusting Him or not.
One of my acts of 4 year-old childish disobedience was the zipper on my jacket.  I could never get that thing right.  It frustrated me to no end!  Mom knew it and would get the zipper untangled and start it over again.  As soon as I saw her get it right I would reach out and grab the zipper to finish the job.  Now, a child needs to learn to operate zippers and other everyday functions in life…but with respect due his teacher.  In the same way a Christian must understand that whatever we accomplish is really not because of our power; it is Christ in us.  We are like gloves, totally useless unless the hand is placed inside, moving the fingers to the will of the body.  The gloved hand, having grasped, lifted, and placed an object in the right place, that glove can no sooner take credit for the accomplishment than a wolf baying at the moon can claim he caused the sun to rise.
But we are like that as soon as we begin to think we can get along without abject, worshipful humility before God.  And it shows in places like Charlottesville when, instead of unity in the Spirit there is hatred in the heart; that is the inevitable result when people become bored with being servants of God and begin to imagine themselves being god.
The branch imagines itself the Gardener.

For You Today

Let’s hear the last word today from Paul:
Because of the privilege and authority God has given me, I give each of you this warning: Don’t think you are better than you really are. Be honest in your evaluation of yourselves, measuring yourselves by the faith God has given us.  Romans 12:3(NLT)
You chew on that as you hit the Rocky Road…have a blessed day!
