Time to Wake Up

Monday, September 4, 2023

“Write this letter to the angel of the church in Sardis.  This is the message from the one who has the sevenfold Spirit of God and the seven stars: “I know all the things you do, and that you have a reputation for being alive—but you are dead. Revelation 3:1

In Great Britain, each year since 1974, an average of 85 churches closes their doors for the last time; they go out of business.  As a result, there is an abundance of church furnishings being sold to commercial enterprises.  Christening fonts are sold as bird baths.  Pews and screens are used as restaurant decorations, and stained-glass windows are now household ornaments.

We shake our heads at 85 British churches closing; and then stare in amazement when we are told that more than double that number are closing each year in America.  We should not be surprised.  Nearly 90% of America's churches are either plateaued or declining in membership.  You cannot decline without somehow decaying, and, eventually deceasing!  Some would suggest that the Christian Church is dying for the lack of Christian living.

Our text tells us that Christianity in the church and the individual Christian can die.  The programs and services can be staffed and performed, but without life.  The blower in the furnace is on, but the fire has long since been extinguished!  Someone has said that if the Holy Spirit left most churches today, she wouldn't be missed.  Let's look at a church that had that very problem.

A reputation for being alive suggests vitality and authority.  Sardis was built on the top of a  90o cliff that was totally inaccessible from three sides.  There was only one gateway into the city; the residents felt safe.  They were prosperous, and lived in an impregnable fortress.  However, the city was conquered and destroyed twice in its history.  In BC 549 the Medes under Cyrus came right through the front gate while the guards slept.  The same thing happened in BC 218.  Antiochus the Great caught the guards napping, and waltzed right in the front door.  This ancient city had a reputation for being impregnable to military conquest, but it went to sleep, and the fall was great.  In the same way, Jesus speaks to the fellowship of Christians at Sardis – a group without financial hardship, or persecution – a church of successful people, and he says:  "Your reputation is that of being strong, impregnable -- you are badly mistaken!"

Jesus then cautions them to wake up:

Wake up! Strengthen what little remains, for even what is left is almost dead. I find that your actions do not meet the requirements of my God. 3 Go back to what you heard and believed at first; hold to it firmly. Repent and turn to me again. If you don’t wake up, I will come to you suddenly, as unexpected as a thief.  Revelation 3:2-3

If you have ever pulled guard duty in the Army, you know it requires considerable effort to keep the eyelids in function-mode for four long hours.  There's just something about someone saying, "Stay awake!" that just makes you want to immediately go to sleep.

The sense of these verses is that ministry which was ongoing and vital at Sardis had waned; it was fading fast, and would soon die altogether.  Jesus warns them to shake-out of the lethargy and turn around.

For You Today

The message of Jesus to Sardis rings as strongly today as it ever has in history.

If you had a heart on-fire for God, it’s time to rekindle it; blow on those embers before it’s too late!  If you were an evangelistic soul-winner, get busy in the neighborhood knocking on doors.  Don't let the ministry die!

You chew on that as you hit the Rocky Road; have a blessed day!

Joshua's Caution

Wednesday, July 6, 2022

The years passed, and the Lord had given the people of Israel rest from all their enemies.  Joshua, who was now very old, called together all the elders, leaders, judges, and officers of Israel.  He said to them, “I am now a very old man.  You have seen everything the Lord your God has done for you during my lifetime.  The Lord your God has fought for you against your enemies.

“Soon I will die, going the way of everything on earth.  Deep in your hearts you know that every promise of the Lord your God has come true.  Not a single one has failed!  But as surely as the Lord your God has given you the good things he promised, he will also bring disaster on you if you disobey him.  He will completely destroy you from this good land he has given you.  If you break the covenant of the Lord your God by worshiping and serving other gods, his anger will burn against you, and you will quickly vanish from the good land he has given you.”  Joshua 23:1-3, 14-16

When Moses was about to die he passed the leadership of the young Israeli nation into Joshua’s hands.  Joshua had faithfully followed and served God, assisting Moses during the wilderness wanderings.  But it was time to cross Jordan without Moses, and obey God’s command to conquer and occupy the Promised Land.  Now, years later, Joshua is getting ready to pass along the leadership to another.  As he leaves the people he loved and led, he gives one last vital caution:  Keep serving God, who loves you – resist anything else.

The meaning of that message needs little explanation…except when a nation, obviously blessed by the hand of God, fails to remember what a blessing they’ve received, and begins to act like they can get along without guidance from, and obedience to, the hand from which that blessing came.

Walking with God’s approval means obeying God’s will.

It doesn’t get simpler than that.

I mused on that late at night on July 4th as I tried to go to sleep.  The fireworks flashing and sounding off made sleeping somewhat difficult, and the musing led to an inner sense of longing for America to return to serving God.  We have a long way to go on that journey.

Every journey begins with a first step, and God’s people know the right direction to step out.  Standing still will not suffice.

Wakeup Call

Wednesday, June 1, 2022

After seven days the Lord gave me a message.  He said, “Son of man, I have appointed you as a watchman for Israel.  Whenever you receive a message from me, warn people immediately.  If I warn the wicked, saying, ‘You are under the penalty of death,’ but you fail to deliver the warning, they will die in their sins.  And I will hold you responsible for their deaths.  If you warn them and they refuse to repent and keep on sinning, they will die in their sins.  But you will have saved yourself because you obeyed me.  “If righteous people turn away from their righteous behavior and ignore the obstacles I put in their way, they will die.  And if you do not warn them, they will die in their sins.  None of their righteous acts will be remembered, and I will hold you responsible for their deaths.  But if you warn righteous people not to sin and they listen to you and do not sin, they will live, and you will have saved yourself, too.”                Ezekiel 3:16-21

I’m not sure there is anything quite so annoying as the sound of an alarm clock at 5am.  It interrupts dreams, starts the dog barking, and pumps that early morning awareness that the workday beckons, and I’m still tired.  It’s a disturbance of the peace, and I’m not comfortable with that.

Ezekiel was Israel’s early morning alarm clock, the watchman for God’s signal that there was work to do, righteousness that was failing, responsibilities ignored, and the devil to pay for defying God’s holiness.  Ezekiel’s voice may have been the most annoying, irksome, and interfering sound they could hear.  But alarms are not supposed to be comfortable…you don’t want to sleep through it!

It's impossible to read any of the prophets and not get a little uncomfortable, that is, if you’ve got an ounce of sense in your body.  The message is always disconcerting, particularly for those who have been either fighting God, or trying to ignore Him.  The duty of a prophet/watchman is to be a harbinger of judgment.  Most people don’t want to hear that; they’d rather concentrate on taking that vacation to Disney.  But judgment is at the end of things, just as surely as that sign-then-drive contract at the car dealership means you’ll be paying big time at the end of the month.

Scripture warns of such, both death, and God’s judgment following death:

And just as each person is destined to die once and after that comes judgment, Hebrews 9:27

For we must all stand before Christ to be judged. We will each receive whatever we deserve for the good or evil we have done in this earthly body.  2 Corinthians 5:10

But the sound of voices like Ezekiel, Hosea, Isaiah, Jeremiah, and all the others, can also be reassuring.  The reminder of judgment also signals the lovingkindness of God, His forgiveness just waiting for us to return to Him.  As a promise, this rates better than five-stars on a hotel at Disney or the Riviera – it’s a pathway right to the throne room in Heaven.

For You Today

The next time your pastor preaches on either judgment or Heaven, remember that BOTH are always present.  If you want one, and not the other, the choice is always available.

You chew on that as you hit the Rocky Road with Jesus; have a blessed day!

Despite Wickedness

Friday, May 6, 2022

“As for you, O people of Israel, this is what the Sovereign Lord says:  Go right ahead and worship your idols, but sooner or later you will obey me and will stop bringing shame on my holy name by worshiping idols.  For on my holy mountain, the great mountain of Israel, says the Sovereign Lord, the people of Israel will someday worship me, and I will accept them.  There I will require that you bring me all your offerings and choice gifts and sacrifices.  When I bring you home from exile, you will be like a pleasing sacrifice to me.  And I will display my holiness through you as all the nations watch.  Then when I have brought you home to the land I promised with a solemn oath to give to your ancestors, you will know that I am the Lord.  You will look back on all the ways you defiled yourselves and will hate yourselves because of the evil you have done.  You will know that I am the Lord, O people of Israel, when I have honored my name by treating you mercifully in spite of your wickedness.  I, the Sovereign Lord, have spoken!”  Ezekiel 20:39-44

The Sovereign Lord is the Creator of the universe.  Despite the wickedness of His chosen people, Israel, God was not only willing to forgive, He promised it as a matter of prophetic certainty.  In all prophetic utterance, by prophets, apostles, and metaphorical stories[1], there is typically a current application, AND a future expectation.  We often miss that, because we cannot see the future, even 5 minutes ahead.  It’s like two mountains, the closer one (our current day) larger than the one behind it (the future prediction).  We are at ground-level, so to speak.  Our sight is limited.  Prophetic utterance is God, the Creator of time and space, and is therefore not governed by either time, or space.  God is above time and space (as a helicopter hovering above the two mountains), and He can see what we cannot.[2]  When the God above speaks, we who ARE governed by time, space, and the expectations of their Creator, should pay attention.

God reminded Israel of their wickedness, worshipping idols out of a fear of not fitting-in with the surrounding cultures, and dishonoring their calling to be God’s special chosen ones to proclaim God’s love to the world.  But the warning threat of accountability also came with a prophecy that they would get past the regret of despising their own sins, to be forgiven and restored to right relationship with God.

In our 21st century culture there is enough identifying with ungodly culture going on (even in the church) to be like a second-mountain behind the first (of Ezekiel’s time).  The church of the third millennium is no different than the first two-thousand years…we leave our first-love of Jesus in the dust like the church at Ephesus which apostle John wrote about in Revelation 2:1-5.  There was also a prophetic warning in that message.

For You Today

Prophecy isn’t about sensationalism, or all about God getting even with us for our wickedness.  Prophecy is God’s despite of our wickedness to proclaim the love and providence of our Lord for lost and wayward sheep.  It’s an open invitation to come back to the purpose for which we were created…an intensely intimate relationship with a God who loves us supremely.

You chew on that as you hit the Rocky Road with Jesus; have a blessed day!

[1] Some consider, for instance, Adam and Eve, Jonah, and other accounts of miracles and historical events to be “fictional stories” told to make God’s point.  I leave that to the reader’s conscience.  Prophecy is not a metaphor, however; all of God’s word is His promise (and warning).

Watch Yourselves

Wednesday, February 23, 2022

One day Jesus said to his disciples, “There will always be temptations to sin, but what sorrow awaits the person who does the tempting!  It would be better to be thrown into the sea with a millstone hung around your neck than to cause one of these little ones to fall into sin.  So watch yourselves!                     Luke 17:1-3a

A warning is only as big as the power owned by the one making the threat.  In Luke’s account, the threat carries more weight than a herd of elephants cascading over Niagara Falls.  Jesus spoke to the stormy winds on the Sea of Galilee and they immediately hushed.  That’s impressive, but climate control is nothing compared to the power that speaks to death and then walks out of a sealed tomb!

That being said, the warning Jesus gave to his disciples, about tempting others to sin, carries the kind of powerful retributive promise which should leave anyone shaking in his boots.  If the Creator of everything speaks, it’s important to listen.

A prime example of those who do not listen is found in the entertainment industry.  This statement points at virtually the entire industry, with few exceptions.  Frankly, compared to even 20 years ago, the amount of vile language, indecent depictions of sex, and graphic violence, have gone off the charts.

A typical “excuse” used to prop-up the industry’s self-aggrandizing image is that they simply offer a product.  They claim to bear no responsibility for what the people view.  It is true there is an on-off button to TV, internet, publishing, and theatre.  But there is plenty of responsibility nonetheless!

A man who grew up in the same house with Jesus was the apostle, James, who had this to say about the source of temptation:

Temptation comes from our own desires, which entice us and drag us away.  These desires give birth to sinful actions.  And when sin is allowed to grow, it gives birth to death.  James 1:14-15

So, if temptation comes from within, it is our own fault…yes?  No argument there, says the Hollywood producer…let the buyer of my indecent artwork beware.  However, if you objectively (and honestly) revisit what Jesus said to his disciples about the sorrow that awaits those who do the tempting, you’d be hard-pressed to make a case for producers of smut and visual filth getting off scott-free on judgment day!  You cannot own both sides of an argument, and the fattening of bank accounts will swing the ledger’s testimony against the entertainment industry at the foot of the Great White Throne!  Even O.J.’s attorney wouldn’t be able to pull that one off!

For You Today

Whichever side of the “smut vs. decency” issue you support (and you ARE on one side or the other, either by your words, deeds, or simply silence), remember the warning of Jesus.  He wasn’t joking.  If you’re on Jesus’ side of this issue, pray for those who aren’t; they are in a very precarious place.  When the king of glory says Watch Yourselves, looking the other way isn’t an option; you’re either with him, or against him.

You chew on that as you hit the Rocky Road; have a blessed day!

“However, no one knows the day or hour when these things will happen, not even the angels in heaven or the Son himself.  Only the Father knows.  And since you don’t know when that time will come, be on guard!  Stay alert![1]     “The coming of the Son of Man can be illustrated by the story of a man going on a long trip.  When he left home, he gave each of his slaves instructions about the work they were to do, and he told the gatekeeper to watch for his return.  You, too, must keep watch!  For you don’t know when the master of the household will return—in the evening, at midnight, before dawn, or at daybreak.  Don’t let him find you sleeping when he arrives without warning.  I say to you what I say to everyone:  Watch for him!”  Mark 13:32-37

That corner of the room where Elizabeth and I eat breakfast and have our morning devotion together is watched-over by my Mom and Dad’s grandfather clock.
As I read Mark’s account of Jesus telling his disciples to be watching diligently for His return, the clock knew what we were reading.  I read the words of Jesus be on guard…stay alert!  Right on cue, the clock struck…BONG, BONG…just over my left ear.  I tell you; it was hard to concentrate on finishing the reading.  There is something just foreboding and portentous about the sound of those Winchester chimes bonging from the depths of that clock’s presence.  But when it arrives with the words of Jesus, STAY ALERT cannot be ignored.

We are in the first light of a new calendar year.  I would ask how those resolutions are going, but I wouldn’t be that unkind.  It’s always on God’s agenda to give us a fresh start.  Resolution is part of that process, and, for obvious reasons, staying alert is always the next step in the process.  The most important of those evident reasons is greasy tracks.  It’s been said our lives are like railroad tracks, and God always greases the tracks in the direction you choose.  If you start walking in God’s direction, he will be found.  If you walk away from Him, you’ll find it easier and easier to ignore that still small voice every day.

Finding God’s will in your process is imperative; it’s like reading the owner’s manual.  Much like a manufacturer of computers sends updates to keep your machine working properly, God’s will is His ultimate human software patch

To carry any analogy too far is dangerous, but just to beg the elephant in the room (about God’s will and our programming) we must consider malware viruses.  The enemy is constantly looking for ways past your security system.  The apostle Peter echoes Jesus’ warning:

Stay alert!  Watch out for your great enemy, the devil.  He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.  1 Peter 5:8

God’s will can be found in His Word – that which will seek out and dismantle any hacking attempts by the enemy.

For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.  Hebrews 4:12

One last computer comparison:  Prayer is the activation code.

Devote yourselves to prayer with an alert mind and a thankful heart.  Colossians 4:2

For You Today

In a world that has been lulled into dozing off by a myriad of distractions, keeping an alert mind that keeps in-focus and eyes on the goal of God’s will in your life.  What else could be more important than staying alert?

You chew on that as you hit the Rocky Road; have a blessed day!

What Calls from Below

Friday, March 27, 2020

“Son of man, give the people of Israel this message:  You are saying, ‘Our sins are heavy upon us; we are wasting away!  How can we survive?’  As surely as I live, says the Sovereign Lord, I take no pleasure in the death of wicked people. I only want them to turn from their wicked ways so they can live.  Turn!  Turn from your wickedness, O people of Israel!  Why should you die?

“Son of man, give your people this message:  The righteous behavior of righteous people will not save them if they turn to sin, nor will the wicked behavior of wicked people destroy them if they repent and turn from their sins.  When I tell righteous people that they will live, but then they sin, expecting their past righteousness to save them, then none of their righteous acts will be remembered.  I will destroy them for their sins.  And suppose I tell some wicked people that they will surely die, but then they turn from their sins and do what is just and right.  For instance, they might give back a debtor’s security, return what they have stolen, and obey my life-giving laws, no longer doing what is evil.  If they do this, then they will surely live and not die.  None of their past sins will be brought up again, for they have done what is just and right, and they will surely live.  Ezekiel 33:10-16

The prophet Ezekiel’s clear watchman message on the absence of a neutral position on sin is that, it matters what you do with what’s in front of you, much more so than what you did yesterday.
Some of the conversations I’ve had with people since the onslaught of the newest plague, Covid-19, have turned to whether or not this is the beginning of the End-Time judgment of God.  Is the blood of past sins calling down the wrath of God on humankind?  There’s a case to be made for that; some would say a strong case!  After all, God does not wink at sin.  All the way through Scripture it is presented clearly that sin’s penalty is death.  From the very first warning of God to Adam and Eve, that, in the day they sinned their souls would experience death’s sting…through the cursing of the ground, decline of health and life’s longevity, and the displays of God’s willingness to save from sin, this has been the human story:  we sin, experience a little more hell until we repent; God forgives and covers the sin with His righteousness.  And we hardly learn the lesson.  It’s like the shampoo bottle instructions – lather, rinse, repeat.
So, is Covid-19 God’s judgment gavel about to hit the bench?  Are we toast?  The answer is threefold, yes, no, and I really don’t know.

Yes …is the sense that God always judges humankind’s sin.

No …is the sense that we humans were created in the image of God, but that image is dimmed so much by our wickedness, we hardly can understand the concept of God’s will and righteousness, much less know what God is up to.

I Really Don’t Know …is my final answer – God has reserved the timing of his judgment to himself.  As Jesus told his followers…no one but the Father knows that day

For You Today
Considering we cannot know, when judgment will come, or even if Covid-19 is part of it, it is much smarter to do what Ezekiel suggested…turn…turn!  The Bible word for turning is repent; to repent is to turn away from sin and turn to God.
Remember, Ezekiel said that God said your past wickedness can’t destroy you if you turn to Him.  So…are you waiting for a particular reason other than unbelief?
You chew on that as you hit the Rocky Road; have a blessed day!

Who REALLY Knows How Bad It Is?

Hear the Word of the Lord given through the prophet Jeremiah, who issued a warning to God’s people (leaders and followers), and then offered hope:
Jeremiah’s Warning

This is what the Lord says: “Cursed are those who put their trust in mere humans, who rely on human strength and turn their hearts away from the Lord.  They are like stunted shrubs in the desert, with no hope for the future.  They will live in the barren wilderness, in an uninhabited salty land.  Jeremiah 17:5-6(NLT)

Jeremiah presents a contrast between those who cave-in to the culture, as opposed to those who live Godly lives no matter which way the wind blows.  The cursed are eventually going to be stunted shrubs in the barren desert; there will be no hope.  But the Godly ones who resist the cultural shift towards evil…they will draw from deep waters; their fruit will stand the test of time.  In short, they have God’s blessing, which is the hope of all who trust in Christ, not the culture.
I do not have to tell you that the early Methodist movement under John and Charles Wesley bore the Godly fruit of holiness, which blessed this nation and the world for generations.  Among that fruit the world saw an end to slavery, the beginning of sweeping spiritual revival, and social reform.  In the mid-part of the last century Methodists were also at the forefront of combatting racism.
But the shift of lukewarm waters into our baptismal fonts of recent generations has made Methodism more like a social club than a holy movement.  Where once Methodists were considered people of the Book of Books, now we’re a wide tent of anything goes!  God’s book lies collecting dust on coffee tables and tucked-away in grandma’s cabinet, and even absent in many church worship services.
United Methodists do have a huge book of rules, most of which means nothing, because nobody wants to offend anybody.  We elect people to lead, but the only place they lead whoever’s following is into temptation.
·      Where is the deliverance of leaders and followers in hot pursuit of God?
·      Where is God’s remnant?
·      Where are the Methodists who have God as their hope?
·      Where are the people of God who have a backbone and not simply a wishbone, hoping problems will go away?
I’ll tell you where they are – they’re in Africa.
While North American Methodism grows more tepid and lukewarm with every passing liberalization of faith and practice, our black brothers and sisters on the dark continent are standing in light; they’re standing strong for Biblical faith, Biblical marriage, and sexuality without perversion.  And they are not slaves to money and buildings, because they know they’ve got a King who owns the cattle on a thousand hills, and a building not made with hands.
In 2007 I went to the South African nation of Zimbabwe to help build a seminary building and teach African pastors the doctrine of End Times recorded in Daniel, Matthew and Revelation.  Many of these young pastors were so hungry for the Word of God they walked 10 or more miles each day to the seminary.
After a full day of study and work on the building they walked back home to tend their meager little farm plots and meet with their congregations under a tree somewhere.  They had little of this world’s stuff, but they were covered in the anointing of God’s Holy Spirit.  I taught them what I learned studying Scripture, but they taught me what it means to be a real disciple, one who has tapped into the power follow Jesus Christ, make more disciples, and transform the world.
While we were in Harare, Zimbabwe we held a 4-day outdoor Vacation Bible School for the children.  I shared the simple Gospel through an interpreter and more than 100 little girls and boys received Christ as savior.  I’m not an evangelist, but when the Spirit of God is working you do the best you can, and then get back out of the way, because wonderful things happen!  I was no missionary to them; they were teaching me what the real work is all about.
The children I met that week were not looking for cell phones, or more sophisticated toys to collect dust; their parents had taught them well to respect others and to turn to the Word of God.  This was evident because, when the invitation to accept Christ was offered, the children were also offered a choice between staying behind to make their decision to accept Jesus or go outside with their teachers to play and have some candy.  Most of the children stayed behind.  These children rarely had treats and free time to play, so candy is always a big draw.  But, for those 8, 9, and 10-year-old children, following Christ meant putting aside a momentary treat in favor of eternal salvation.
There are those who think of Africa and parts of South America as backward and third world because of financial poverty and backward educational levels.  But in those impoverished places the Spirit of God is moving, and they are rich in the things of God – something of which all the riches of Solomon or Fort Knox will never buy or even understand.  The only backwardness of these people is they’ve gone back to God’s Word, while the rest of the so-called civilized and progressive world has gone forward to the shame of apostasy, Godless and proud of it!
Beloved, if you think Africa is full of savages, I invite you to look at the savagery the so-called first-world countries display.  We kill each other over stock portfolios, parade our sexual perversity as if it’s a badge of sophistication, and snuff out the lives of the unborn like squashing a mosquito.  Meanwhile, the so-called savages of the African bush are sharing burdens, enduring hardship, and even persecution; our African brothers and sisters protect life, gender purity, and preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ, pure, unadulterated and doctrinally-sound.  I ask you, who’s the REAL savage?
We Americans like to call ourselves a “Christian” nation.  Friends, if ever we were a so-called Christian nation, we have graduated to become the evil, apostate, and lost nation we read about in Scripture:

What sorrow for those who say that evil is good and good is evil...Isaiah 5:20a(NLT)

And the irony of it all is that we don’t even know it; we reject it when we hear it, we squabble over nitpicking things like whether the black people will be black in heaven…and we are still murdering the prophets, the unborn, and persecuting the bride of Jesus Christ.
And some of us will never find out those things because heaven will never be seen, except from the side of the throne where the goats gather!  There is coming a day when God is going to set things right; He is continually searching the hearts of human beings, and Jeremiah’s warning includes an assurance that, where he finds unbelief, there will be judgment:

“The human heart is the most deceitful of all things, and desperately wicked.  Who really knows how bad it is?  But I, the Lord, search all hearts and examine secret motives.  I give all people their due rewards, according to what their actions deserve.”  Jeremiah 17:9-10(NLT)

The warning couldn’t be clearer; if a person will not serve Jesus, the Cornerstone, then, to you He becomes the Rock of Offense, a stumbling stone that will crush whatever life you may think you possess.
Warnings without consequences may be what parents do these days, but our Eternal Heavenly Father knows no such thing; what He promises, He delivers!
Jeremiah also has a word of hope.
Jeremiah’s Hope

But blessed are those who trust in the Lord and have made the Lord their hope and confidence.  They are like trees planted along a riverbank, with roots that reach deep into the water.  Such trees are not bothered by the heat or worried by long months of drought.  Their leaves stay green, and they never stop producing fruit.  Jeremiah 17:7-8(NLT)

This hope is simple; those who place their trust in the LORD, receive the LORD as their hope.  Jesus’ love and friendship to us is the kind of eternal life and strength of deep roots in the heavens.  There may be storms down here, but we stand like the great cedars of Lebanon; we may stand here physically battered, but we’re growing stronger with every wind of adversity.
How strong is that strength?

And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love.  Romans 8:38(NLT)

And, by the way, that promise is sure, and includes whatever happens this week, next month, or in the next thousand years.
The edicts of human kings and queens tend to fall apart like grass withering and fading to oblivion, but the Word of God stands forever.
In the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit…Let it be so!
