Watch Yourselves

Wednesday, February 23, 2022

One day Jesus said to his disciples, “There will always be temptations to sin, but what sorrow awaits the person who does the tempting!  It would be better to be thrown into the sea with a millstone hung around your neck than to cause one of these little ones to fall into sin.  So watch yourselves!                     Luke 17:1-3a

A warning is only as big as the power owned by the one making the threat.  In Luke’s account, the threat carries more weight than a herd of elephants cascading over Niagara Falls.  Jesus spoke to the stormy winds on the Sea of Galilee and they immediately hushed.  That’s impressive, but climate control is nothing compared to the power that speaks to death and then walks out of a sealed tomb!

That being said, the warning Jesus gave to his disciples, about tempting others to sin, carries the kind of powerful retributive promise which should leave anyone shaking in his boots.  If the Creator of everything speaks, it’s important to listen.

A prime example of those who do not listen is found in the entertainment industry.  This statement points at virtually the entire industry, with few exceptions.  Frankly, compared to even 20 years ago, the amount of vile language, indecent depictions of sex, and graphic violence, have gone off the charts.

A typical “excuse” used to prop-up the industry’s self-aggrandizing image is that they simply offer a product.  They claim to bear no responsibility for what the people view.  It is true there is an on-off button to TV, internet, publishing, and theatre.  But there is plenty of responsibility nonetheless!

A man who grew up in the same house with Jesus was the apostle, James, who had this to say about the source of temptation:

Temptation comes from our own desires, which entice us and drag us away.  These desires give birth to sinful actions.  And when sin is allowed to grow, it gives birth to death.  James 1:14-15

So, if temptation comes from within, it is our own fault…yes?  No argument there, says the Hollywood producer…let the buyer of my indecent artwork beware.  However, if you objectively (and honestly) revisit what Jesus said to his disciples about the sorrow that awaits those who do the tempting, you’d be hard-pressed to make a case for producers of smut and visual filth getting off scott-free on judgment day!  You cannot own both sides of an argument, and the fattening of bank accounts will swing the ledger’s testimony against the entertainment industry at the foot of the Great White Throne!  Even O.J.’s attorney wouldn’t be able to pull that one off!

For You Today

Whichever side of the “smut vs. decency” issue you support (and you ARE on one side or the other, either by your words, deeds, or simply silence), remember the warning of Jesus.  He wasn’t joking.  If you’re on Jesus’ side of this issue, pray for those who aren’t; they are in a very precarious place.  When the king of glory says Watch Yourselves, looking the other way isn’t an option; you’re either with him, or against him.

You chew on that as you hit the Rocky Road; have a blessed day!

Judgment Day

Wednesday, July 17, 2019

“But when the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit upon his glorious throne.  All the nations will be gathered in his presence, and he will separate the people as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.  He will place the sheep at his right hand and the goats at his left.  “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the creation of the world.  For I was hungry, and you fed me.  I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink.  I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home.  I was naked, and you gave me clothing.  I was sick, and you cared for me.  I was in prison, and you visited me.’  “Then these righteous ones will reply, ‘Lord, when did we ever see you hungry and feed you?  Or thirsty and give you something to drink?  Or a stranger and show you hospitality?  Or naked and give you clothing?  When did we ever see you sick or in prison and visit you?’  “And the King will say, ‘I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!’   Matthew 25:31-40

Whatever do you do with an elephant in the room.  It’s rather difficult to ignore a beast that’s 13 feet high, weighs-in at 7 tons and eats 300lbs of veggies out of your fridge every day![2]  But that’s a theological reality for many people when the topic turns toward judgment day.  So many categorically deny a final judgment, where unbelievers are consigned to everlasting punishment, or Hell.  Rob Lowe, a “Christian” preacher, at the outset of his rise to rock star status in evangelical circles, at least seemed orthodox; then came Love Wins, his book unveiling his Universalism view, that, ultimately there is no judgment…God unconditionally forgives and loves everybody forever, believers and unbelievers alike.
The question, then, is whatever became of sin, punishment, and accountability?  It’s the new elephant in the room when it comes to passages like Matthew 25 (and about 1259 other chapters in Scripture).
So, if Scripture is wrong, and Rob Lowe is right, along with all the other Universalists, atheists, agnostics, (and whatever other terms you can dredge-up for those who snicker at the thought of an actual judgment day), that must mean that I can live my life the way I want, take whatever I want, ignore whomever is in need, build my empire, exploit the weak, and generally just have a fine time being the master of my fate, the captain of my life’s ship, and get heaven in the bargain?  I can be Joel Osteen, Donald Trump, and Genghis Khan all rolled in one, and God’s gonna break into a huge, welcoming smile when I hit the pearly gates?
Is that it?
Or is the truth found in Christian orthodoxy, the faith handed down from Jesus through the apostles, recorded and taught for two-thousand years…not to mention the unquestioned teaching of the Old Testament’s four-thousand-year history of accountability and judgment for sin.
So, is it orthodox truth, or the hare-brained neo-orthodoxy of the late 20th century that says just go with my Burger King theology…have it your way!  If the hare-brains are right, we are all going to have to take a scissors to our Bibles…and cut out the last part of Jesus’ words recorded in Matthew’s Gospel.  He said:

“And he will answer, ‘I tell you the truth, when you refused to help the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were refusing to help me.’  “And they will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous will go into eternal life.”  Matthew 25:44-46

For You Today
With so much emphasis these days on unity with total acceptance of everybody’s thoughts or lifestyle, and the vilification of any kind of separation, or differences, from life roles to unmarked bathrooms, the idea that one person might go to heaven while another winds up in hell, is as intolerant an idea for this generation as can be.  It is put in the waste-bin of rejected out-of-hand nonsense, and totally unsuitable for rational culture.
Oh my…that sounds like something of a judgment, doesn’t it?
You chew on that as you hit the Rocky Road; have a blessed day.

The Great Assize

This sermon is about the final judgment…the Great Assize, and how each of us will one day stand before the greatest judge.
Remember, we will all stand before the judgment seat of God.  For the Scriptures say, “‘As surely as I live,’ says the Lord, ‘every knee will bend to me, and every tongue will declare allegiance to God.’” Romans 14:10-11(NLT)
Have you ever had to stand before a judge as the accused?  The only time for me was as the responsible adult representative of a minor child who had made a really dumb choice.

It is a very solemn thing; it’s entirely sobering and makes every nerve ending you have come alive as the bailiff summons you to stand before the one who will make decisions about your future.

It’s also a pretty humbling moment if you live in a small town and even the judges know you.  I mean, how much more embarrassing could it be than having no hole to crawl-in when the hushed courtroom silence is broken as the judge, in front of a roomful of small town citizens, begins the conversation with, Good afternoon, Rev-er-end Brownworth!

In retrospect, that kind of humiliation is a picnic compared to the reality of what Scripture’s Great Assize, the Great White Throne Judgment is all about.  Paul the Apostle says we will all stand before that judgment seat some day.

You may now shudder instead of saying amen!

Apostle John was shown the great courtroom in the vision recorded in Revelation:

And I saw a great white throne and the one sitting on it.  The earth and sky fled from his presence, but they found no place to hide.  I saw the dead, both great and small, standing before God’s throne.  And the books were opened, including the Book of Life.  And the dead were judged according to what they had done, as recorded in the books.  The sea gave up its dead, and death and the grave gave up their dead.  And all were judged according to their deeds.  Then death and the grave were thrown into the lake of fire.  This lake of fire is the second death.  And anyone whose name was not found recorded in the Book of Life was thrown into the lake of fire.   Revelation 20:11-15

when will this judgment happen?

There are only two possibilities about when we appear before the judge:

1.     We will stand there after we die, or…
2.     We will stand there when Christ returns.

But either way Scripture declares we will all stand before the throne.

Now, not everyone believes this; there are those today who declare, even from pulpits where, supposedly, God’s Word is faithfully preached, that God welcomes everyone, and there is no such thing as punishment; this is called universalism and it ignores the plain truth stated over and again in the Scripture that there is no grace for those persons who refuse to stand before God confessing their sin.

The principles upon which God created this universe include the balance of opposites; without “up” there is no “down”.  Without “cold” how can you have “hot”, and, indeed, if there is no sin to be forgiven, how can there be forgiveness; what do you forgive, if not sin?

No – the grace of God also tells us quite plainly of the judgment of God for those who reject Him.

where will this judgment happen?

The fact that Paul’s letters to the Thessalonians indicates believers join Christ in the air would have us conclude that it is there or perhaps in heaven near the throne of God.

My personal view is that it will be a mobile court.  Scripture indicates that there will be nothing of a “defense” for those who have rejected Christ.  I take that to mean the evidence of their deeds done in the body will convict them utterly.

Scripture[ii] says that during this judgment the accused will see his or her words, actions, and even the intention of their hearts for every sin ever committed.  This will require a mobile court.

For instance, if you’re Adolph Hitler, you will move from the bunker in Berlin to Auschwitz and to scenes of atrocities in Poland and the laboratories where human experiments were done on the mentally ill.

If you’re Sadaam Hussein you will see the many thousands of executions in Baghdad, and the cowardice of a hiding hole outside Tikrit.

And if it’s me…or you….everything will be revealed at the seat of the Assize; God, who is omniscient, (all-knowing) is going to replay the security camera footage of all time in every place:

For the time is coming when everything that is covered will be revealed, and all that is secret will be made known to all.  Matthew 10:26(NLT)

John Wesley fleshed-out in his 1758 sermon on the judgment what it will be like to stand in front of the throne of God in that day:
And in that day shall be discovered every inward working of every human soul; every appetite, passion, inclination, affection, with the various combinations of them, with every temper and disposition that constitute the whole complex character of each individual. So shall it be clearly and infallibly seen, who was righteous, and who unrighteous; and in what degree every action, or person, or character was either good or evil.[iii]
This is without question one of the most worrisome parts of the Great White Throne assize; the judgment comes from He who is omniscient, knowing everything from actions – to words – to deeds and even the intentions of our hearts!

what will the judgment cover?

Again, Wesley, who preached his “Assize sermon” before the magistrates who had come to Bedford, England to conduct trials:

Here [meaning, now, on planet earth, in our court systems] a man is questioned concerning one or two facts, which he is supposed to have committed: there we are to give an account of all our works, from the cradle to the grave; of all our words; of all our desires and tempers, all the thoughts and intents of our hearts; of all the use we have made of our various talents, whether of mind, body, or fortune.  In this court [here and now], it is possible, some who are guilty may escape for want of evidence; but there is no want of evidence in that court.  All men, with whom you had the most secret intercourse, who were privy to all your designs and actions, are ready before your face.  So are all the spirits of darkness, who inspired evil designs and assisted in the execution of them.  So are all the angels of God; those eyes of the Lord, that run to and fro over all the earth, who watched over your soul, and labored for your good, so far as you would permit.  So is your own conscience, a thousand witnesses in one, now no more capable of being either blinded or silenced, but constrained to know and to speak the naked truth, touching all your thoughts, and words, and actions.  And is conscience as a thousand witnesses – yea, but God is as a thousand consciences!  O, who can stand before the face of the great God, even our Savior Jesus Christ![iv]

Who indeed is rich or powerful in the grave?  And who is it that can change one word of the Great Assize?

Charles Haddon Spurgeon preached in the late 19th century a sermon on this Great Assize,

But to the ungodly how terrible.  They are to receive the things that they have done; that is to say, the punishment due,—not every man alike, but the greater sinner the greater doom; to the man who sinned against light a greater damnation than to the man who had not the same light,—Sodom and Gomorrah their place, Tyre and Sidon their place, and then to Capernaum and Bethsaida their place of more intolerable torment, because they had the Gospel and rejected it—so the Lord himself tells us.  And the punishment will not only be meted out in proportion to the transgression, but it will be a development of the evil actions done in the evil consequences to be endured, as every man shall eat the fruit of his own ways.  Sin, after the natural order, ripens into sorrow.  This is not a blind fate, but it is the operation of a divine law, wise and invariable.  Oh, how dreadful it will be for the malicious man to have for ever to gnaw his own envious heart, to find his malice come home to him, as birds come home to roost, to hoot for ever in his own soul; for the lustful man to feel lust burning in every vein, which he can never gratify;—for the drunkard to have a thirst, which not even a drop of water can allay;—for the glutton who has fared sumptuously every day, to be in hunger perpetually; and the soul that has been wrathful to be for ever wrathful, with the fire of wrath for ever burning like a volcano in his soul; and the rebel against God for ever a rebel, cursing God whom he cannot touch, and finding his curses come back upon himself.[v]

Spurgeon’s description of Hell finds little support in this day.  It is this preacher’s humble opinion this is so because we are moving quite definitely towards that time where the Bible declares a great apostasy will overcome common sense and right thinking.

Apostle Peter warned:

But there were also false prophets in Israel, just as there will be false teachers among you.  They will cleverly teach destructive heresies and even deny the Master who bought them.  In this way, they will bring sudden destruction on themselves.  Many will follow their evil teaching and shameful immorality.  And because of these teachers, the way of truth will be slandered.  2 Peter 2:1-2(NLT)

Simply:

·       Right will be proclaimed as wrong and intolerant

·       Righteous living will be seen as bigoted and judgmental.

·       Kindness will be seen as weakness;

·       Bullying and sadistic treatment of those who cannot defend themselves will be seen as strong leadership.

In short, Christian values will, in the eyes of the world, be turned upside-down.

Paul warned Timothy:

For a time is coming when people will no longer listen to sound and wholesome teaching. They will follow their own desires and will look for teachers who will tell them whatever their itching ears want to hear.  2 Timothy 4:3(NLT)

The Great Assize, the Day of the Lord, Judgment Day is coming.  It may not be in our lifetime; it could begin before I finish this sentence.  The question we must deal with is:

how shall we live with this?

You live with this by embracing the truth that Christ can be either your Assize, your judge in the hereafter, or He can be your Savior now.  You just cannot have it both ways.

The simplest verse of Scripture even many unbelievers can quote is:

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him might not perish, but have eternal life.  John 3:16(KJV)

The strength of that one Scriptural truth is that God does not want to be your judge; he wants to be your savior.  He wants to redeem you from the judgment, so instead of hearing these words:

Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:  Matthew 25:41(NLT)

…you will instead hear these words

“Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the creation of the world.  Matthew 25:34(NLT)

Great Assize…or Great Savior and friend.

You have a choice – so says the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.  Amen

Sermon for January 26, 2014

Revelation 20:11 - 15[1]
At most funeral services you hear something about the resurrection.  It is almost without exception that the second resurrection was left out of the sermon.  Did you realize that there are two resurrections?
The Second Resurrection is Different from the First

The first resurrection

The first resurrection is the Body of Christ.  That is a good news event!  This is the next great event that Bible prophecy says is going to happen.  God will begin the end of time by opening all the graves of Jesus believers who have previously died.  Immediately following, God will take all the living Christians in something of a massive teleportation to meet Jesus in the air.  The whole Christian family is with their Christ in the air!

The second resurrection

The second resurrection is for those who are unsaved.  This is bad news.  Who are the unsaved?  Anyone who has not trusted in Christ for salvation.  The Bible says that all the people of all times will stand before the judge.
…each person is destined to die once and after that comes judgment, Hebrews 9:27
Of course the choice is up to each individual to believe or disbelieve.  However, it is unbelief that will bring you to the second resurrection of judgment, and not the first resurrection of rewards.  And, in that day the Scripture declares, we will all stand before the judge.  This indicates there will be no place to hide; stand with Him or before Him.

Do you want to be Judged by law…

Some folks imagine that simply being good is all it takes to make God happy – going to church, paying tithes, not kicking dogs, and helping little old ladies across the street.  Now, being good isn't bad (I even recommend it); but if you are going to count on your obedience, you'd better make certain you are perfect
The Bible says that offending only one of God's laws makes you a sinner.  If you choose to be judged on the merit of your behavior, you had better make certain you can stand in front of God perfect, sinless!
Some folks imagine there will be some kind of scale approach to the judgment.  If you have done some good things in life they will be placed on the positive side.  The bad things you have done are placed on the other side of the scale.  The theory is, if the good outweighs the bad, God is convinced you're not so bad, and He lets you in heaven.  That, my friend, is about as plausible as the Mother Teresa shooting a man down in cold blood, and then standing before the judge with a list of the orphanages and hospitals.  Don't you believe they wouldn't strap her in the chair!
Being judged by the law doesn't take into account anything good you've done, only the bad!  That's a dilemma none of us can deal with and overcome.  That's why God made the other judgment possibility available:

…Or Judged by Grace?

When you cannot stand in your own perfection, you can stand covered by the grace of Jesus.  He said that there is no one who comes to the Father, except through Him.  When you humbly confess your sinful condition (your inability to be perfect before God), and you ask Jesus to forgive you, He does just that!  And then when you stand before the Father, it is Jesus who stands in front of you.  The Father sees the perfection of His son, not your sin.
Which do you prefer; law or grace?
Remember if you choose to be judged by the law, the Ten Commandments -- everything you've ever said, done, or thought is written down in God's book of life (Rev 20:12).  Also, everything in that book is going to be revealed in that last day (Luke 12.2,3)
God will execute only one judgment at the second resurrection for all those who have refused to accept Jesus Christ as Savior – death!
For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.  Rom 6:23 (NIV)
A second reality about the second resurrection and its judgment...
The Second Death is Worse than the First
According to the Bible, the first death is temporary.  It begins, for the unsaved person, at Hell; and ends at the Great White Throne Judgment of God after the second resurrection.  That is bad enough.  However, the second death – judgment sentence of the second resurrection – is much worse than the first death.  It is:

Eternal

Matthew's gospel account (25.41-46) gives this reality from the lips of Jesus himself:  "eternal fire...eternal punishment."  There is no end to the torment -- it is eternal.

Extreme

In earlier chapters of The Revelation, John describes just how gruesome is the torment of unbelievers in the everlasting fire.
The smoke of their torment will rise forever and ever, and they will have no relief day or night, for they have worshiped the beast and his statue and have accepted the mark of his name.”     Revelation 14:11
I recently read This Present Darkness by Frank Peretti.  It is a novel of the struggle between demons and angels, worked out in a small town.  Knowing something about the outcome of all struggles between good and evil, I found myself shaking my head each time some demon alluded to their "victories."  I'd think to myself, If you only knew what I know, you wouldn't be acting that way, fella!
The second death is going to be eternal, extreme, and...

Equitable

Some sins incur a greater degree of punishment.  At the time of his earthly trial, Jesus told Pilate that the sin of Judas' betrayal was greater than most.
Then Jesus said, “You would have no power over me at all unless it were given to you from above.  So the one who handed me over to you has the greater sin.”   John 19:11
In some way the balance sheets of God have got to be reconciled.  While one sin makes you a sinner, and guilty of all sin; there is some way in which God will repay every evil according to the degree of wickedness that accompanies the sin.  Judgment will be equitable, fair – and that's what makes it awesome and scary!
Now, if the second resurrection is so awful, and the second death something to be avoided at all costs, what can we do?  What should we do?  Notice the answer found in the third difference:
The Second Birth is All That Can Prevent the Second Death
So don’t be surprised when I say, ‘You must be born again.’  John 3:7
The first birth is natural; it comes to all of us in the natural order of things; we are human beings, children of Adam's race.  The first birth ends in death.  The second birth is spiritual...
For just as there are natural bodies, there are also spiritual bodies.  The Scriptures tell us, “The first man, Adam, became a living person.”  But the last Adam—that is, Christ—is a life-giving Spirit.  1 Corinthians 15:44 - 45
Notice Paul says that the last Adam (Jesus) is a "life-giving spirit"?  The first birth ends in the first death.  The second birth ends in eternal life.  What does it mean?

Renewal Now

This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person.  The old life is gone; a new life has begun!   2 Corinthians 5:17
The one true mark of conversion from death to life is a changed life.  And it isn't just the outward things we do.  It is the inward life.  Do you love more?  Do you hate and gossip less?  Are you more willing to see others' point of view?  Is your inner life changed?  Renewal Now; and...

Reversal Then

Jesus told his followers a story about a self-centered, uncaring rich man, and a poor beggar who lay at the rich man's porch.  The rich man cared nothing for God, or what God would have him do.  He was born just once.  The poor man had little of this world's goods, he was sick and no one cared for him.  Yet he loved God and was born twice.
Both men eventually died and were judged.  The rich man wound up in torment, the poor man in paradise.  The rich man now called out to God and asked for a little relief.  God's answer:
…‘Son, remember that during your lifetime you had everything you wanted, and Lazarus had nothing.  So now he is here being comforted, and you are in anguish.   Luke 16:25
The second death is a place of knowing, remembering, feeling and suffering.  It is eternal, and worse than what we now call death.  There is only one thing in the universe than can prevent the second death – a second birth!
Do you remember the recent Academy Award winning picture, Schindler's List?  It's a true story of a German manufacturer who literally spent his fortune bribing German officials to save the lives of people destined to die in the Holocaust of World War II. Can you imagine what it would have been like to have been one of those people assigned to one of those camps?  You've heard all the rumors about what happens there. Now, you're marched in the gates, and you see those smokestacks with the ashes polluting the air, and you're chilled by the knowledge that you're literally breathing the ashes of fellow human beings.
There was no way out of that except one way.  There was no hope except one thing.  There was a list – Schindler's list.  A fortune had been spent to buy the lives of some 500 people. Those who were on that list did not have a special talent, did not have a special reason for being there, nothing exceptional or unexceptional about them.  It was just that their names were on the list.  And that list literally saved them from the fiery inferno[2]
There is another list.
Beloved, Jesus offers you the new birth, a spiritual birth, an escape from everlasting torment.  All it takes is the application of His blood.  He is willing.  The only question is:
Will you have it?
Will you accept Him now, and serve only Him?
There will come a time when all of history and destiny will be reduced to a list.  You are on Satan's death list – we are all sinners, and condemned by our sin.  Are you on Jesus' list of life?  Has the blood cleansed and made you whiter than snow?
Blessed and holy are those who share in the first resurrection.  For them the second death holds no power, but they will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign with him a thousand years.    Revelation 20:6
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
