Coming Home

Wednesday, September 5, 2018

“Today I call on heaven and earth as witnesses against you.  If you break my covenant, you will quickly disappear from the land you are crossing the Jordan to occupy.  You will live there only a short time; then you will be utterly destroyed.  For the Lord will scatter you among the nations, where only a few of you will survive.  There, in a foreign land, you will worship idols made from wood and stone—gods that neither see nor hear nor eat nor smell.  But from there you will search again for the Lord your God.  And if you search for him with all your heart and soul, you will find him.  “In the distant future, when you are suffering all these things, you will finally return to the Lord your God and listen to what he tells you.  For the Lord your God is a merciful God; he will not abandon you or destroy you or forget the solemn covenant he made with your ancestors.  Deuteronomy 4:26-31(NLT)

When Moses realized his time leading the nation of Israel was done he gathered them together to share his final words of caution and encouragement.  Last words are important words, because they are words of wisdom gained from years of mistakes and successes; these words have been seasoned by time.
When we pay attention to last words in light of the way that person’s life was lived, we can learn something valuable for the life which we still have to live.  For the nation of Israel that meant understanding Moses knew something about realizing when you’ve slipped off the wagon and how to come home again.
Moses had spent enough time falling off the wagon.  Born to royal privilege, he became a murderer, conspirator, and someone who ran from his responsibilities.  Moses was a big disappointment in his early days.  But spending 40 years as a fugitive and a nobody shepherd on the back side of nowhere had taught him to get his life in line with God’s will.  When the time came at the burning bush, Moses was finally in a position to listen to Yahweh and put some of that wisdom to Kingdom use.
Moses came home to his royal destiny.  It was not as Pharaoh over Egypt, but as the father of a new nation; slaves were transformed into servants of the Most High God.  And Moses was their leader – a wise man who knew how to lead by the Spirit of God, and take the children of God to the Promised Land of God.
Fast Forward about 3,700 years and you will find God’s children still in need of wisdom and courage to follow God.  But the most pressing need is to know what Moses knew; when you’ve slipped off the God-wagon, there is nothing more pressing or right than to come back home.
I have seen it time and again; at the end of a worship service someone will take me by the arm and ask me to pray for them.  Or even before a service is past the call to worship I notice the downcast look of a Prodigal, the tear of a brokenhearted saint, previously on fire for Christ, but, of late a Christian soldier who is AWOL, absent in the ranks of Christ’s spiritual warriors.  The need is felt by that overwhelming absence – a Jesus-shaped hole on the inside; where once there was joy, now there is darkness.  And remembering the joy, they want to find their way home.
Moses told Israel that would happen to them.  And he told them when it did happen, just come on home.  Your God is merciful; Yahweh has not forgotten his covenant promises.
It is still that way; Jesus made sure we heard that right:

Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon you.  Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.”  Matthew 11:28-30(NLT)

For You Today
If you have that emptiness that is like a Jesus-shaped hole on the inside, and it’s been awhile since you walked with Him, remember coming home will always find the arms of our Lord open wide; remember also that the first step is always yours.
You chew on that as you hit the Rocky Road; have a blessed day.

The Cost of Arrogance

Tuesday, July 25, 2017
What sorrow awaits rebellious, polluted Jerusalem, the city of violence and crime!  No one can tell it anything; it refuses all correction.  It does not trust in the Lord or draw near to its God.  Its leaders are like roaring lions hunting for their victims.  Its judges are like ravenous wolves at evening time, who by dawn have left no trace of their prey.  Its prophets are arrogant liars seeking their own gain.  Its priests defile the Temple by disobeying God’s instructions.  But the Lord is still there in the city, and he does no wrong.  Day by day he hands down justice, and he does not fail.  But the wicked know no shame.  “I have wiped out many nations, devastating their fortress walls and towers.  Their streets are now deserted; their cities lie in silent ruin.  There are no survivors—none at all.  I thought, ‘Surely they will have reverence for me now!
Surely they will listen to my warnings.  Then I won’t need to strike again, destroying their homes.’  But no, they get up early to continue their evil deeds.  Therefore, be patient,” says the Lord.  “Soon I will stand and accuse these evil nations.  For I have decided to gather the kingdoms of the earth and pour out my fiercest anger and fury on them.  All the earth will be devoured by the fire of my jealousy.  “Then I will purify the speech of all people, so that everyone can worship the Lord together.  My scattered people who live beyond the rivers of Ethiopia will come to present their offerings.  On that day you will no longer need to be ashamed, for you will no longer be rebels against me.  I will remove all proud and arrogant people from among you.  There will be no more haughtiness on my holy mountain.  Those who are left will be the lowly and humble, for it is they who trust in the name of the Lord.  The remnant of Israel will do no wrong; they will never tell lies or deceive one another.  They will eat and sleep in safety, and no one will make them afraid.”  Zephaniah 3:1-13
(NLT)
Hans Christian Anderson wrote a tongue-in-cheek fairy tale about an emperor who was so vain and arrogant he was convinced by a shrewd tailor that because of the new invisible suit of clothes made for him he was the finest dressed ruler in the entire world.  Parading around in his skivvies, the emperor was the laughingstock of the parade!
Many have compared America as a chosen the purpose of being to God’s representative to the world, and a great force for good…just like ancient Israel.  Now, I would not, as the old expression has it, throw out that baby with the bath water.  However, if my friends are right about America’s self-view of invincible exceptionalism, and if our leaders are fully-clothed, in their right minds, I would simply submit that the comparison between the United States and God’s chosen Israel must be accepted in its’ entirety!  Another old saying holds that you must take the bad along with the good!
In Zephaniah’s prophecy, Israel is lambasted and warned that their arrogant ways, ignoring God, justice and mercy, are stripping the nation of any chance of being God’s witness of love.  Instead they are full of themselves and ripe for judgment.
Where did this arrogance come from?  It was largely the leaders who began to believe their own press reports about Israel’s special history, power and protection by God.  With impunity and unmitigated gall they began to congratulate themselves on their place in history and how they held all the cards.  They forgot the One who was really in charge.
Those who want to compare America as the New Israel need to see the pitiful similarity between ancient Israel’s leaders and America’s political power brokers, who act with either ignorance of, or indifference towards God.
Of course this is not much different than the voters who put them in power.  We have gone way past even the pretense of being a Christian nation, past modern and post-modern, all the way to godless hedonism.
May God have mercy on us; we are going to need it!

For You Today

As bleak as the political scene and horizon may look for America, there is always hope for a nation, an individual, or a neighbor who will return to God.
May it be so with me, and with you, as we commit ourselves to proclaiming His kingdom today; let the revival begin!
You chew on that as you hit the Rocky Road…have a blessed day!

The Sedative Effect

Friday, July 7, 2017
But you, lazybones, how long will you sleep?  When will you wake up?  A little extra sleep, a little more slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest—then poverty will pounce on you like a bandit; scarcity will attack you like an armed robber.  Proverbs 6:9-11(NLT)
It’s been a lot of years since I had surgery with general anesthetic.  Aside from the effect of having someone carve holes in you with a scalpel, there are other consequences.
Monday morning when the anesthesiologist put the mask on me and said, now just take a few deep breaths…I’m not sure I heard another word.  I awoke a few hours later…almost!  They told my bride, Elizabeth I was tough to wake up.  (She could only smile; she knows I sleep like a weary dead man anyway.)
I honestly don’t remember ever waking up.  I don’t recall them helping me to get out of the semi-private gown and into my jeans.  I seem to recall walking through the surgery center doors outside, but missed the trip back to Thomasville entirely, including a stop at the pharmacy for those wonderful little pills that took the post-op pain away.
The next two days are a hazy blur!  I will have to take it on faith that some unethical telemarketer didn’t get me to sign-away my firstborn into slavery while I was under the influence!
There are some other residual effects of sedation strong enough to bring down a herd of bull elephants; I’ll spare you the graphic intimate details!
You’re welcome.
One application about drug-induced sleep; it’s a little like the sin of complacency.  When you’re in deep, you hardly know you’re in deep.  And even when they – friends, family, or the preacher – try to awaken you, you can’t cooperate without some strong assistance.
God spoke to the nation of Israel, with that kind of rather harsh assistance, to get them to awaken from the sedative effect:
“I am the Lord, and I do not change.  That is why you descendants of Jacob are not already destroyed.  Ever since the days of your ancestors, you have scorned my decrees and failed to obey them.  Now return to me, and I will return to you,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.  “But you ask, ‘How can we return when we have never gone away?’  “Should people cheat God? Yet you have cheated me!  “But you ask, ‘What do you mean?  When did we ever cheat you?’  “You have cheated me of the tithes and offerings due to me.  You are under a curse, for your whole nation has been cheating me.  Bring all the tithes into the storehouse so there will be enough food in my Temple.  If you do,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, “I will open the windows of heaven for you.  I will pour out a blessing so great you won’t have enough room to take it in!  Try it!  Put me to the test!  Malachi 3:6-10(NLT)
The sedative effect of cumulative sin had dulled the spiritual sensitivity of God’s people, and they were quite comfortable in going through the motions of religious activities, while their hearts (and tithes) were far away from the God for which they proclaimed undying love.
Israel needed strong assistance out of their anesthesia…it was time to wake up!
Yet, despite their obvious, sleeping, sinful ways, God was still willing to bless them if they turned back to him.  Which proves once again that it wasn’t Israel’s people who had undying love for God…it was the other way around.

For You Today

Could it be America, its churches, and we, the people, need to return to our Heavenly Father as much as ancient Israel?
You chew on that as you hit the Rocky Road…have a blessed day!
