What Was I Thinking?

Tuesday, July 23, 2019

Oh, how I love your instructions!  I think about them all day long.  Your commands make me wiser than my enemies, for they are my constant guide.  Yes, I have more insight than my teachers, for I am always thinking of your laws.  I am even wiser than my elders, for I have kept your commandments.      I have refused to walk on any evil path, so that I may remain obedient to your word.  I haven’t turned away from your regulations, for you have taught me well.  How sweet your words taste to me; they are sweeter than honey.  Your commandments give me understanding; no wonder I hate every false way of life.  Psalm 119:97-104

The Edsel was born in 1957 and rolled-out as a mid-size/price family car for the public the following year.  While initial sales were respectable, the 1958 so-called Eisenhower recession turned this high-performance gas guzzler into the most storied flop of all time in the auto industry.  Named after Henry Ford’s only son, who had died 15 years prior, Edsel became the next generation’s nickname for anything that was bound to fail.  When Richard Nixon defeated George McGovern for president in 1972 by 26% of the vote, someone suggested his middle name was probably Edsel!
The author of Psalm 119 is unknown to us.  David authored about half of the Psalms, and it may have been from his early years before the dust-up over Bathsheba.  It makes little difference whether it was David, Moses, Daniel or Heman who put pen on the parchment; God (the ultimate author of all Scripture gave us an incredibly important reminder here of human nature’s ability to be arrogant and spiritual at the same time…all it takes is a little naïveté.
The Psalmist claims wisdom and understanding greater than his teachers, purity of life that is above reproach, and a life that is governed by a heart completely devoted to obeying God’s ways.  King David seemed to have been that for much of his life, but there were times when the duplicity of David’s actions and words would’ve made Adolph Hitler or Joseph Stalin blush.  David could be a spiritual hero; he could also sink quickly to zero!
And such are we all.
The problem with this Psalm is not in the author; the problem is ours, imagining that God’s ways (sometimes called his rules, regulations, or commandments) can be kept perfectly; frankly, we cannot!  If there was a possibility that humans, any humans could live a life perfectly following devotion to God there would have been no reason for Jesus to take our place on the cross.  But human nature is tainted by sin, and there is no human that lives free from sin.  We are the human version of Edsel, bound to fail to love God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength![2]
But God does not leave us in the pit of despair, even though we might choose that far country in which to wallow.  As Paul asked in his letter to the Roman believers about his tendency to choose sin…doing the wrong he did so intently want to avoid, and not doing the good to which his soul aspired and longed-for, who shall deliver me from the body of this death?[3]  The answer echoed back that it was Jesus Christ who delivers us from sin.
For You Today
For human sinners Jesus’ death on the cross took away the penalty of our sin and made it possible to blunt its power over those who trust in His gift of atonement. And, there is coming a day when even the presence of sin will be removed.
You chew on that as you hit the Rocky Road; have a blessed day.

Going Out Into the Night

Wednesday, April 17, 2019

Now Jesus was deeply troubled, and he exclaimed, “I tell you the truth, one of you will betray me!”  The disciples looked at each other, wondering whom he could mean.  The disciple Jesus loved was sitting next to Jesus at the table.  Simon Peter motioned to him to ask, “Who’s he talking about?”  So that disciple leaned over to Jesus and asked, “Lord, who is it?”  Jesus responded, “It is the one to whom I give the bread I dip in the bowl.”  And when he had dipped it, he gave it to Judas, son of Simon Iscariot.  When Judas had eaten the bread, Satan entered into him.  Then Jesus told him, “Hurry and do what you’re going to do.”  None of the others at the table knew what Jesus meant.  Since Judas was their treasurer, some thought Jesus was telling him to go and pay for the food or to give some money to the poor.  So Judas left at once, going out into the night.  As soon as Judas left the room, Jesus said, “The time has come for the Son of Man to enter into his glory, and God will be glorified because of him.  And since God receives glory because of the Son, he will give his own glory to the Son, and he will do so at once.  John 13:21-32

I always worried about that exchange of bread; Jesus dipped the bread into the bowl, gave it to Judas intentionally, and then John (an eyewitness) records Satan entered into him.  My mind goes to possibilities such as whether Jesus caused Judas’ fall.  Did Judas know what he was doing?  Was he somehow duped into betraying Jesus?  Was Judas just a pawn in God’s game?
But all these questions work against free will.  At the moment Jesus held forth the piece of bread to Judas it was still an offer of friendship; one man holding forth the gift of sustenance to another.  On a deeper level, the bread was the symbol Jesus had used earlier…the bread of life, which was being offered; Jesus was saying, my life is in your hands, brother.  This makes receiving the bread truly, as Jesus’ friend, or falsely, as traitor, a ball that was still in Judas’ court.  When Judas took the bread with betrayal still in his heart, it opened the path to his soul for Satan to take charge.  Inviting that, Judas went out into the night.
The epilogue to Judas’ treachery could’ve been written differently had his heart been bathed in repentance for even thinking of selling Jesus to the religious leaders for 30 pieces of silver.  Later Apostle Paul would write about this moment taking place in the hearts of would-be followers of Jesus:

So anyone who eats this bread or drinks this cup of the Lord unworthily is guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord.  That is why you should examine yourself before eating the bread and drinking the cup.  For if you eat the bread or drink the cup without honoring the body of Christ, you are eating and drinking God’s judgment upon yourself.  That is why many of you are weak and sick and some have even died.  1 Corinthians 11:27-30

It gives a whole new perspective on the importance of communion to think in these ways about the possibility of our own connection with Judas when we treat God’s loaf and cup lightly.
The opportunities are only two:
           ·      Life in the light of Christ
           ·      Death going out into the night.
For You Today
Sometimes “holy week” can turn our attention to details that miss the weighty center of what God is doing.  We can scurry around getting ready for the Easter parade, bonnets, colored eggs, and such, when the real target is eternal life.
You chew on that as you hit the Rocky Road; have a blessed day.

The Thin Line Between Black Friday and Good Friday

Friday, November 25, 2016
The Lord observed the extent of human wickedness on the earth, and he saw that everything they thought or imagined was consistently and totally evil.  So the Lord was sorry he had ever made them and put them on the earth.  It broke his heart.  And the Lord said, “I will wipe this human race I have created from the face of the earth.  Yes, and I will destroy every living thing—all the people, the large animals, the small animals that scurry along the ground, and even the birds of the sky.  I am sorry I ever made them.”  But Noah found favor with the Lord.  Genesis 6:5-8(NLT)
I’m always thankful for Thanksgiving.  The atmosphere of family gatherings and a pause from the rat race to catch up with loved ones and take intentional moments to offer thanks to God for blessings…well, it just seems to put me in a good frame of mind.
Of late that frame has had some of the shine rubbed off its edges.  I have been besieged with an inbox full of Black Friday deals.  Amazon, Cokesbury, Macys, Sears, J.C.Penney, and anyone who ever got my email address want to offer me pre-Black Friday discounts and special, big-time-you-are-special-to-us-our-personal-friend-and-lifelong-buddy, Mr. R. Brownworth, customer #988979734572…shipping and handling separate, of course!
I now know how God felt when he decided to wipe humans off the face of the earth; enough is enough!
But I cannot read Genesis 6 without being caught up by that hopeful tag line:  But Noah found favor with the Lord.
Noah’s day was not all that different from our Black Friday mentality.  The mood of the day was party, party, and…well, party!  But Noah kept his focus on the calling God had laid on his life.  Frankly that’s hard to do when the noise of a culture says:  Turn up the volume, this party’s just getting started!  The focus of Noah’s life was to get ready for the event that would be a new beginning for the human race.
And so was the other Friday – Good Friday
If ever there was a moment of new beginning, the moment that itinerant insurrectionist of love spoke while hanging on a cross, Father, forgive them, they don’t know what they’re doing…it opened the flood gates of grace.
It’s a thin line between Black Friday and Good Friday.
On Black Friday the store floodgates open at Midnight and it’s all heels and elbows running like would-be matadors ahead of the bulls at Pamplona, crashing through the Apple Store entrance to snatch up the merchandise monster’s grace discounts.
On Good Friday the world stood silent while God died.
It’s somewhat schizophrenic to gather on Thursday, offer humble prayers of Thanksgiving around the table of God’s bountiful blessings, and then spend the afternoon watching football while searching your I-Phone for the best midnight specials.
But that is the picture of Noah’s day and our day; it is the picture of humans-in-need-of-forgiveness-day!  It’s our human-race family picture.
It is the picture of who we are…walking a thin line between the different Fridays.

For You Today

I saw a report on the news of a survey that asked if you were going to participate in the wee-hours shopping craze known as Black Friday.  The report predicted a sharp decrease this year.
I had two immediate thoughts:  Wall Street must be shaking in their boots, and perhaps God has more Noah-like people than I ever imagined.
Maybe Black Friday will turn out to be a Good Friday.
You chew on that as you hit the Rocky Road…have a blessed day!

A Broken Sense of Ethics

Wednesday, July 27, 2016
Instead, we will speak the truth in love, growing in every way more and more like Christ, who is the head of his body, the church.  Ephesians 4:15(NLT)
Sometimes truth is spoken, and there is no love in it.  This 30 year-old cartoon comes to mind:

The truth is, the coach wants a win, big-time!  When he takes his hat off, still foaming at the mouth and invites the team to pray, you wonder whom to believe, Jekyll or Hyde?  Just looking at the players, you know they’re feeling it too; notice how the player on the far right has a complete facial expression change from, Yeah, let’s kill ‘em to HUH?

I’ve seen a lot of that look in this political season; I’ve seen it mostly in the mirror.  That look shows up when I’m listening to the candidates.  That kill ‘em but pray for ‘em see-saw tone used by the wild-eyed candidates overwhelms my ability to believe almost anything they say on the campaign stump.

Duplicity, Fraud, Scammer, Deceiver, Treacherous….these are all synonyms describing people who say things that are meant to sway the listener’s support, but the actions which follow are inconsistent; they say one thing, mean and do another.

Now, please save the cards and letters – I’ve heard all the “reasons” why if you don’t vote for this one, you’re voting for the other. (Mathematically that isn’t true anyway – at most the value of a non-vote could only approach ½ a vote).

I do intend to vote, but this political cycle has been perhaps the biggest challenge I’ve ever faced to making an ethical choice, consistent with God’s Word on choosing godly leaders.

All of the candidates have ethical compromises.  Each claims to be Christian.  In the case of the Blue Party, a lifelong Methodist and Roman Catholic both support abortion; they’re both either in the wrong church, or consider themselves exempt…or above answering to that point.

In the Red Party, the candidates are a self-proclaimed Presbyterian, and a born-again Evangelical Roman Catholic.  In the case of the VP candidate, he still places money over faith.  He initially signed a religious freedom law in Indiana permitting people to refuse to do business with anyone on the basis of their faith, but the following week signed a watered-down version replacing it when corporations and celebrities complained.

As for the Presidential candidate, he claims to be a Presbyterian but denies ever apologizing to anyone – mother, father, or God.  As I recall, that little thing about confession of sin to God (apologizing) to confirm our belief is a rather standard requirement.  I do not presume to know his heart, but going to church for a drop of wine and a little cracker so you can feel good afterward….once every ten years, whether you need it or not, is hardly evidence to support a claim of godliness.

Once again – I do not intend to judge another’s heart relationship with God; in fact, I just wish they would all leave that part out of their speeches.

But, no matter what, it is going to be a rocky road to November 8th

For You Today

I invite you to do what I have committed to do…pray hard…every day…for the candidates to speak truth…and to learn to speak it in love.

And then, relax….God’s got this, believe it or not!

You chew on that as you hit the Rocky Road today…have a blessed day!
