Faith Seasoned Wisdom

Tuesday, August 8, 2023

Then Jacob sent messengers ahead to his brother, Esau, who was living in the region of Seir in the land of Edom.  He told them, “Give this message to my master Esau: ‘Humble greetings from your servant Jacob.  Until now I have been living with Uncle Laban, and now I own cattle, donkeys, flocks of sheep and goats, and many servants, both men and women.  I have sent these messengers to inform my lord of my coming, hoping that you will be friendly to me.’”  After delivering the message, the messengers returned to Jacob and reported, “We met your brother, Esau, and he is already on his way to meet you—with an army of 400 men!”  Jacob was terrified at the news.  He divided his household, along with the flocks and herds and camels, into two groups.  He thought, “If Esau meets one group and attacks it, perhaps the other group can escape.”  Then Jacob prayed, “O God of my grandfather Abraham, and God of my father, Isaac—O Lord, you told me, ‘Return to your own land and to your relatives.’ And you promised me, ‘I will treat you kindly.’  I am not worthy of all the unfailing love and faithfulness you have shown to me, your servant.  When I left home and crossed the Jordan River, I owned nothing except a walking stick. Now my household fills two large camps!  O Lord, please rescue me from the hand of my brother, Esau.  I am afraid that he is coming to attack me, along with my wives and children.  But you promised me, ‘I will surely treat you kindly, and I will multiply your descendants until they become as numerous as the sands along the seashore—too many to count.’”  Genesis 32:3-12

To learn from your mistakes is the essential quality of wisdom.  To apply faith to wisdom is to serve God above all.  Jacob had a rocky, selfish start to life.  It started in his mother’s womb, when he and his twin brother, Esau, had a daily wrestling match.  As they were born, Esau was first out, but Jacob was hot on his heels, actually grabbing his brother’s foot.  It was sibling rivalry with the first breath.

The story of their lives in their father Isaac’s home was contentious, to say the least.  Jacob’s selfish behavior divided his mother and dad, and made an enemy of his twin brother.  Esau was so angry with his brother’s treacherous ways, Jacob had to leave home and go live with their uncle Laban at a safe distance.  Esau swore he’d kill his twin if ever they met again.

Fast forward twenty years…Jacob is much wiser, and is on his way home to reconcile with his family.  He has no clue as to Esau’s mindset…will his brother make good on his vengeance threat?  Will it end in calamity?  Jacob is wise at this point, dividing his wives and children into two camps, hoping to minimize losses of life and property, if Esau is still bent on Jacob’s death.  But a new dimension has foraged its’ way into Jacob’s life and thinking – faith!  The night before he was to face Esau, he met face-to-face with God’s angel, and the outcome was Jacob’s commitment to serve God, and live by faith, even if it meant giving up everything he'd gained, or even his own life.

What Jacob had learned was what Jesus told Peter hundreds of years later – swords, be they steel or the treachery of human selfishness, may work for awhile, but they have little place in the heart of God.  It is faith that wins.[1]

Seasoning the wisdom of learned mistakes and rocky roads, with faith God has given, is the mark of a life changed and usable in God’s Kingdom.  It took Jacob decades of hard lessons to shed his clever ways in favor of God’s clear kindness…the deep faith of the unashamed!

For You Today

This world will afford you many opportunities to follow both Esau and Jacob’s early mistakes and sins…greed, treachery, revenge, and power.  In the end, those things only produce pain and regret, whether you wind up in jail, or residing in a mansion.  It’s all loss in Heaven’s record books.  The other, wiser choice is to season whatever you have learned with faith to do what the prophet Micah wrote:  do what is right, love mercy, walk humbly with your God.  Micah 6:8

Believing Behavior

Monday, March 6, 2023

Then the people of Israel set out from Mount Hor, taking the road to the Red Sea to go around the land of Edom.  But the people grew impatient with the long journey, and they began to speak against God and Moses.  “Why have you brought us out of Egypt to die here in the wilderness?” they complained. “There is nothing to eat here and nothing to drink.  And we hate this horrible manna!”  So the Lord sent poisonous snakes among the people, and many were bitten and died.  Then the people came to Moses and cried out, “We have sinned by speaking against the Lord and against you.  Pray that the Lord will take away the snakes.”  So Moses prayed for the people.  Then the Lord told him, “Make a replica of a poisonous snake and attach it to a pole. All who are bitten will live if they simply look at it!”  So Moses made a snake out of bronze and attached it to a pole.  Then anyone who was bitten by a snake could look at the bronze snake and be healed!  Numbers 21:4-9

Have you ever wondered why a prayer you lifted to Heaven never got answered?  You’re not alone.  Most people are reluctant to say that out loud, fearing perhaps God might immediately strike them dead with a lightning bolt, or, at the least, they’ll be embarrassed.

I think the answer to the question about why a prayer seemingly goes unanswered has to do with our lack of believing behavior.  We fail to see how this thing we’ve asked for will be answered, and our expectation becomes our reality; nothing happens.  It’s like a golfer taking a half-hearted swing at the ball, because he really wasn’t confident he could make the shot.  The result is what he expected deep down, not what he wanted.  His behavior wasn’t believing.

Now, please don’t lump me in with the name it and claim it or blab it and grab it fruitcake clans.  Most of that tripe is, at worst, thinking you can control God, forcing the Almighty into a corner with His promises attached to your unholy and thinly-disguised greedy materialism.  At the very least it is a misguided view of who is God, and who is not God.

In the case of God’s children in the wilderness, they wanted a change from manna, that supernatural, gracious provision from Heaven.  They weren’t satisfied and began to blame God and Moses for bringing them out to the wilderness and providing everything they needed on their journey to the Promised Land…also freely offered to them by their God.  That whole snake thing could have been avoided, but their unbelief in the way God was releasing them from Egyptian bondage, made their behavior a stench in Heaven’s nostrils.

Horrified by the thought of being exterminated by the serpents, one painful bite at a time, they turned in repentance.  They cried-out loudly:  We have sinned!    Notice however, God didn’t just make the snakes disappear; he had Moses make another snake, bronzed and on a pole.  Their faith wasn’t behavioral obedience until they looked to the serpent on the pole.

In following through (like a golfer, confident in his shot would follow through) those who had been bitten would be healed.  Perhaps, like any good father would expect from a child who has broken the rules, the LORD wanted to see if their belief would truly become behavior.

For You Today

If your desire is to go beyond wish kind of prayers, to faith prayers, let your behavior follow the words you utter with bowed head.  Believing Behavior!

You chew on that as you hit the Rocky Road; have a blessed day!

That Grass On the Other Side

Tuesday, January 31, 2023

The wicked draw their swords and string their bows to kill the poor and the oppressed, to slaughter those who do right.  But their swords will stab their own hearts, and their bows will be broken.  It is better to be godly and have little than to be evil and rich.  For the strength of the wicked will be shattered, but the Lord takes care of the godly.  Psalm 37:14-17

The old adage about greener grass on the other side of the fence could not be more reliable.  For years I’ve driven past a goat farm near our home.  I cannot begin to estimate how often I’ve seen both old and young of the flock with necks straining through the fence to get that luscious green grass on the other side.

It works that way for human goats too!  Those who are poor dream about the green grasses in the land of the rich.  (It’s the reason lottery tickets sell).  Flip that coin and you find the rich wondering what it would be like to live more simply, without the stress of having to protect their wealth from potential thieves.  Both sides of that fence imagine a carefree life of ease on the fence’s other side.  But more often you find the rich unable to resist the temptation to get richer…on the sore backs of those in poverty.  And so it has gone since the Garden of Eden.

Jesus warned about the trap of letting money, or the desire for that greener grass lifestyle, take the place of godliness…which is a life-building others up, instead of storing-up for sefishness sake[1].  Paul picked up on that theme, and instructed his young protégé, Timothy, to teach contentment[2]

It does not surprise me that God came to us in a lowly manger and was content, whether in the company of the rich movers and shakers, or those who were impoverished, destitute of the world’s goods, and no prospect for getting more.  He knew the riches of glory in Heaven with Yahweh; He knew, and had the power of the universe by his word in creation…but he laid it all aside, to be poor for us.

Jesus gave John a warning message for those who thought they had it made, as well as for those who think having what the rich had, would put them in that elite group of carefree livers of the good life:

You say, ‘I am rich.  I have everything I want.  I don’t need a thing!’  And you don’t realize that you are wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked.  So I advise you to buy gold from me—gold that has been purified by fire.  Then you will be rich.  Also buy white garments from me so you will not be shamed by your nakedness, and ointment for your eyes so you will be able to see.  I correct and discipline everyone I love.  So be diligent and turn from your indifference.  Revelation 3:17-19

For You Today

Whether you are rich as the upper class comes, or living nervously on Food Stamps and thrift store cast-offs, that grass on the other side of the fence only looks greener.  What God gave you…a soul with His image stamped on it…is your true wealth and worth.  And it is without price…unless you sell it to this world’s highest bidder.

You chew on that as you hit the Rocky Road; have a blessed day!

Awaken, O Sleeper!

Monday, January 23, 2023

Imitate God, therefore, in everything you do, because you are his dear children.  Live a life filled with love, following the example of Christ.  He loved us and offered himself as a sacrifice for us, a pleasing aroma to God.  Let there be no sexual immorality, impurity, or greed among you.  Such sins have no place among God’s people.  Obscene stories, foolish talk, and coarse jokes—these are not for you.  Instead, let there be thankfulness to God.  You can be sure that no immoral, impure, or greedy person will inherit the Kingdom of Christ and of God.  For a greedy person is an idolater, worshiping the things of this world.  Don’t be fooled by those who try to excuse these sins, for the anger of God will fall on all who disobey him.  Don’t participate in the things these people do.  For once you were full of darkness, but now you have light from the Lord.  So live as people of light!  For this light within you produces only what is good and right and true.  Carefully determine what pleases the Lord.  Take no part in the worthless deeds of evil and darkness; instead, expose them.  It is shameful even to talk about the things that ungodly people do in secret.  But their evil intentions will be exposed when the light shines on them, for the light makes everything visible.  This is why it is said, “Awake, O sleeper, rise up from the dead, and Christ will give you light.”  Ephesians 5:1-14

Some Biblical passages require zero commentary, except perhaps, an honest glimpse in the mirror.  The image of people sleeping in all the wrong places is a stark reminder that there is a time to sleep, and a time to wake-up.  We’re not talking about getting up to arrive at work on time, or get the kids off to school.  The “wokeness factor” is about how we approach life’s darker areas.

The apostle Paul reminds the believers at Ephesus that sexual sins (which is any sexual activity outside of marriage), obscenities (language, pornography, etc), and materialistic greed are what people do when they don’t have a clue about God.

Disciples of Jesus don’t participate in the activities of darkness for two reasons:

1.    Sexual impurity obscene language and foolishness, as well as materialism, lead to the darkness of societal downward-spiral.  It’s destructive!

2.    Because a believer has received Christ, the light of God’s goodness dwells within any disciple of Jesus, and that darker side of life will diminish our view of that for which we were created and saved.

We have, as apostle Peter declared, been called out of the darkness to serve Christ:

But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.  1 Peter 2:9

It is totally inconsistent to be a believer who proclaims the light of Christ from the shadows.  If there is any hope for this generation’s ability to witness of God’s saving and sanctifying grace, it will be for the church of Jesus Christ to walk in that light to which Jesus calls us.

For You Today

There’s enough darkness…time to stop sleeping through life; believers wake-up, and walk in the light.

You chew on that as you hit the Rocky Road; have a blessed day!

When Demons Pray

Wednesday, December 14, 2022

When Jesus arrived on the other side of the lake, in the region of the Gadarenes, two men who were possessed by demons met him.  They came out of the tombs and were so violent that no one could go through that area.  They began screaming at him, “Why are you interfering with us, Son of God?  Have you come here to torture us before God’s appointed time?”  There happened to be a large herd of pigs feeding in the distance.  So the demons begged, “If you cast us out, send us into that herd of pigs.”  “All right, go!” Jesus commanded them.  So the demons came out of the men and entered the pigs, and the whole herd plunged down the steep hillside into the lake and drowned in the water.  The herdsmen fled to the nearby town, telling everyone what happened to the demon-possessed men.  Then the entire town came out to meet Jesus, but they begged him to go away and leave them alone.  Matthew 8:28-34

There is a question here, screaming to be posed to anyone who reads this Gospel account:  Which is a better outcome…two men tortured and driven to hell, or two men healed of their madness, the consequence being a herd of pigs sacrificed?

So often I’ve heard the argument turn towards compassion for a herd of pigs (which were being raised for food), and ignoring the tormented men, possessed by demons.  The evidence of our sinful nature is seen in the epilogue to Jesus healing the men.  The whole town agrees, the pigs were more important to them than the healing of the possessed men.  By begging Jesus to leave, the entire town takes a stance against the liberating compassion of Christ, choosing instead the company of evil.  And thus it has always been.

If you take a closer look at the tortured men, the demons reveal everything that drives their decision.  Their whole activity has one purpose…to bring misery, pain, and death.  All their actions drove the men to violence and disruption.  This has been the game plan of Lucifer since being kicked out of heaven for opposing God.  Apostle Peter warned the flock about Satan’s ways:

Stay alert!  Watch out for your great enemy, the devil.  He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.  1 Peter 5:8

Why is this account in Scripture?  It holds up a mirror to today’s culture…anger, violence, murder, deceit, all of which turns upside-down that which God planned for us, His creation.  He designed the fruit of the Spirit as our dwelling:

But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!  Galatians 5:22-23

Ever opposing the good work of God, demons are under orders from Hell to destroy our peace, and every other work of Heaven, take us by the hand, and lead us to death’s doorstep.

For You Today

The question of the day (always) requires choosing whom you will serve.  So let’s ask it:  What if it were YOUR herd?

Spiritual warfare is not a choice…the battle is already raging.  And in any war, the choice of which side you’ll take must be settled long before the battle begins.

You chew on that as you hit the Rocky Road; have a blessed day!

How Much is Enough?

Wednesday, September 7, 2022

Once a religious leader asked Jesus this question: “Good Teacher, what should I do to inherit eternal life?”  “Why do you call me good?” Jesus asked him.  “Only God is truly good.  But to answer your question, you know the commandments:  ‘You must not commit adultery.  You must not murder.  You must not steal.  You must not testify falsely.  Honor your father and mother.’”  The man replied, “I’ve obeyed all these commandments since I was young.”  When Jesus heard his answer, he said, “There is still one thing you haven’t done.  Sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven.  Then come, follow me.”  But when the man heard this he became very sad, for he was very rich.  When Jesus saw this, he said, “How hard it is for the rich to enter the Kingdom of God!  In fact, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of God!”  Those who heard this said, “Then who in the world can be saved?”  He replied, “What is impossible for people is possible with God.”  Peter said, “We’ve left our homes to follow you.”  “Yes,” Jesus replied, “and I assure you that everyone who has given up house or wife or brothers or parents or children, for the sake of the Kingdom of God, will be repaid many times over in this life, and will have eternal life in the world to come.”                 Luke 18:18-30

The painting of Christ with the rich young ruler reveals the angst-filled pathos of not having a clue when it comes to the destiny of our souls.  The young man asked the elephant-in-the-room question everyone else was thinking…uhhh, Jesus, what’s gonna happen to me in the long run…and what should I do about it?

The men surrounding Jesus are listening intently.  You can see skepticism, fascination, and true holding-your-breath-for-the-answer-honesty in their faces.  After all, you don’t throw-off the question of eternity like you’d discard a candy wrapper.  This was important…even a rich man, with the world at his disposal, couldn’t resist asking for insight on eternal life.

Jesus pointed the young man to what’s written in Scripture about obeying God’s commands, honesty, kindness, generosity, and so on.  But the young man pressed deeper, and Jesus obliged him, and went right for the underbelly of the issue; his answer was, quite pointedly:  What’s the most important thing you wouldn’t want to give up?  The answer welling-up in the young man’s soul made him sad, very sad!  How can you let go of what possesses you?

Peter, (to the left of Jesus in the painting) is standing there with hands unfolded in a questioning motion.  The artist, I believe, is giving Peter’s voice that hopeful edge, as he’s reminding Jesus how he and the other disciples left all they had to follow…was that enough?  Jesus’ answer isn’t a get-out-of-jail-free card, a Christian believer’s ID you can present at the pearly gates.  It’s more of a reminder that the final judgment on each of us is in God’s hands.  It is the Father who looks into each person’s heart and judges, repaying reward or punishment with absolute righteousness.

For You Today

The question the rich young man asked is not a bad one if you ask it with empty hands and open heart.  But a better question might be:  Lord, I have decided nothing I have belongs to me…what should I do with it; how can I follow you today?

You chew on that as you hit the Rocky Road; have a blessed day!

How to Live in a Hostile World

Next week is Superbowl Sunday, and I was recalling the story Dr. Landrum Leavell, the president of New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary told about football when I was a student there.  Dr. Leavell’s uncle Roland attended Southern Baptist Seminary as a student during the tenure of the great theologian, President E.Y. Mullins.  One day during Roland's first year as a student, he absentmindedly fell in step with the tall, stately, and scholarly Dr. Mullins while walking down Fourth Street in Louisville.  Roland was very nervous, at a loss to know what to say to so exalted a person.  What he said was:  It was football season, so in my desperation I asked, 'Dr. Mullins, did you ever play football?'  With a characteristic twinkle in his eye he said, 'No, Brother Leavell, but I was in a stampede of mules once.’  Sometimes asking questions sets us up for the answers of a lifetime!  The question before the house this morning is:

What will life be like in a world

that is totally hostile to God?

You might be thinking:  Why ask that question, preacher?  I know life isn't as genteel as it was back in the fifties, but don't most people believe in God.  Doesn't our Constitution and Bill of Rights guarantee religious freedom?

At the present, those questions deserve a qualified yes.  But the Bible tells us that the Great Tribulation, with its accompanying rebellion against God (and God’s imminent judgment) is going to change everything.  The text today describes the very last moments of the Great Tribulation, and the ultimate demise of Satan's ruler, the Beast, and his worldwide domination – the whore, mystery Babylon.

As we pick up the text from last week, where John had described the fall of Babylon, because of her arrogant stand against God, the apostle now tells us about the judgment she (the coming apostate church) will suffer.

Reasons for the Judgment on Babylon

1. REAPING

After all this I saw another angel come down from heaven with great authority, and the earth grew bright with his splendor.  He gave a mighty shout:  “Babylon is fallen—that great city is fallen!  She has become a home for demons.  She is a hideout for every foul spirit, a hideout for every foul vulture and every foul and dreadful animal.  For all the nations have fallen because of the wine of her passionate immorality.  The kings of the world have committed adultery with her.  Because of her desires for extravagant luxury, the merchants of the world have grown rich.”  Revelation 18:1-3

The ancient world was as full as oppressive practices and people (if not more so) as our society.  John is not telling us that business is wrong, he is pointing at the rich and powerful who oppress the poor.  It is fruitless to pick on one form of laying up earthly treasures over another; most can be either good and useful, or evil and oppressive.  It is in the attitude.  I know rich people who are a great blessing to the Kingdom of God.  They earn and use money as a tool, with which to bless others.  I also know rich people who got and use their wealth in questionable ways.  The essence here is that of reaping and sowing.  What you get is directly related to how and what you sow.

2. RENEWAL

Then I heard another voice calling from heaven, “Come away from her, my people.  Do not take part in her sins, or you will be punished with her.  Revelation 18:4

In God's Word there is always a word for our time.  This word John’s a warning to believers to have nothing to do with oppressive Rome and the judgment that would come in his day.  However, the fitness of these words for the future, and now is timely as well.  The apostle Paul thought so:

Therefore, come out from among unbelievers, and separate yourselves from them, says the Lord.  Don’t touch their filthy things, and I will welcome you.   2 Corinthians 6:17

The word used to describe believers means different.  In no way can we be true to the Great Commission to go into all the world, while trying to maintain our holy huddle, maintaining no contact with those trapped in sinful lifestyles.  I think most people have missed the message at this point.  The people are not the enemy, Satan and death are our enemies!  You cannot witness without eyeballing people.  So, ,what does Jesus mean about staying away from those in Babylon?

While we may not be able to physically get out of the modern Babylon society, we can certainly keep the Babylon out of us.  Jesus said we would be in the world, but we don't have to be like the world.[1]

What do you do with yourself?  Are there activities in your life that you would feel uncomfortable having Jesus with you when you do it?  Now don't get me confused with a works-salvation preacher.  I know God forgives our sins, and we cannot become Christian by being good.  However, once we have become a part of God's family, He expects us to act like it.

A Christian believer, for instance, who spends his time hanging around a bar will still go to heaven, but he also is subject to cirrhosis of the liver, being arrested for drunken driving, getting knifed or shot in a bar fight, and generally being a poor witness for the unbeliever who sees that so-called Christian, dragging bleary-eyed into church after an all-night Saturday binge.  The same can be said for any bad habit you can name, beginning with over-eating, dear Methodist lover of dinner-on-the-grounds!

3. REMEMBERING

For her sins are piled as high as heaven, and God remembers her evil deeds.  Revelation 18:5

Genesis 6 is the account of Noah's ark (well it was God’s ark; Noah was just the contractor).  It’s recorded that God knew the heart (intention) of all men.  It doesn't take a White House leak to the Washington Post for God to know about sin.  He knew right where Adam was, and He knows your sin, and those of ancient and modern Babylon.  And He's got  a perfect memory!  He remembers every sin, except those covered in blood that's dripped from the cross.

4. RECOMPENSE

Do to her as she has done to others.  Double her penalty for all her evil deeds.
She brewed a cup of terror for others, so brew twice as much for her.  She glorified herself and lived in luxury, so match it now with torment and sorrow.
She boasted in her heart, ‘I am queen on my throne.  I am no helpless widow, and I have no reason to mourn.’  Therefore, these plagues will overtake her in a single day—death and mourning and famine.  She will be completely consumed by fire, for the Lord God who judges her is mighty.”  Revelation 18:6-8

Ancient Babylon destroyed Jerusalem, and God said through David that they would not get away with it:

O Babylon, you will be destroyed.  Happy is the one who pays you back for what you have done to us.  Happy is the one who takes your babies and smashes them against the rocks!  Psalms 137:8-9

God's principle of recompense is recorded in both Old and New Testaments,

“The day is near when I, the Lord, will judge all godless nations!  As you have done to Israel, so it will be done to you.  All your evil deeds will fall back on your own heads.  Obadiah 1:15

For you will be treated as you treat others.  The standard you use in judging is the standard by which you will be judged.  Matthew 7:2

Response of the Heathen for the Judgment on Babylon

What will be the response of the world, watching live by satellite, when Babylon's juggernaut of political and economic rule comes crashing down around its ears?

1. POLITICAL LAMENT

And the kings of the world who committed adultery with her and enjoyed her great luxury will mourn for her as they see the smoke rising from her charred remains.  They will stand at a distance, terrified by her great torment.  They will cry out, “How terrible, how terrible for you, O Babylon, you great city!  In a single moment God’s judgment came on you.”  Revelation 18:9-10

The rulers of the lesser nations, subject to Babylon, will have been dependent on the ruthless hand of the Beast, and Babylon's feared practices of terrorism to hold everything in check.  When Babylon falls, the other lesser rulers will be in hot water.  They will see how quickly the judgment falls, in just an hour (or season) and they will know they, too, are subject to being judged.

2. PROFIT LOSS

The merchants of the world will weep and mourn for her, for there is no one left to buy their goods.  She bought great quantities of gold, silver, jewels, and pearls; fine linen, purple, silk, and scarlet cloth; things made of fragrant thyine wood, ivory goods, and objects made of expensive wood; and bronze, iron, and marble.  She also bought cinnamon, spice, incense, myrrh, frankincense, wine, olive oil, fine flour, wheat, cattle, sheep, horses, wagons, and bodies—that is, human slaves.  “The fancy things you loved so much are gone,” they cry.  “All your luxuries and splendor are gone forever, never to be yours again.”  The merchants who became wealthy by selling her these things will stand at a distance, terrified by her great torment.  They will weep and cry out, “How terrible, how terrible for that great city!  She was clothed in finest purple and scarlet linens, decked out with gold and precious stones and pearls!  In a single moment all the wealth of the city is gone!”  And all the captains of the merchant ships and their passengers and sailors and crews will stand at a distance.  They will cry out as they watch the smoke ascend, and they will say, “Where is there another city as great as this?”  And they will weep and throw dust on their heads to show their grief.  And they will cry out, “How terrible, how terrible for that great city!  The shipowners became wealthy by transporting her great wealth on the seas.  In a single moment it is all gone.  Revelation 18:11-19

The merchant's howl!  There are things you can mess with in this life, and still be relatively safe.  But among the sacred cows is a man's wallet.  A preacher went to visit one of his members who was a farmer.  He very rarely gave anything to the work of the Lord.  They sat and talked after supper, Artis, said the Preacher, that was a mighty good dinner.  Your own beef?  The farmer replied with a smile, Yep; hand fed -- the best!  The preacher then asked, What do you suppose 5,000 head like that would bring at the market?  Oh, a great deal of money, preacher.  I just wish I had me 5,000 of those.  I'd give half the money I got to the Lord.  Said the preacher, Well, Artis, that's quite generous -- the Lord only asks for 10% -- and you'd give half?  Artis replied that he would.  Truly, if I had 500 sheep fer sale, I'd give the money for half of them to the Lord, too.  Remarked the preacher, My word, Artis, the Lord would sure be pleased.

An' preacher, he continued, I wish I had a hundred Arabian stallions t'sell -- half of that'd fetch a good offering for the Lord.  Said the preacher: And if you had just two pigs...

Wait a minute, preacher, that ain't fair, you already know I got two pigs!

The fall of Babylon will be worse than 1929 revisited.  It will be darker than Black Monday of recent recessions.   The kings, merchants, and masters of transportation will howl in lament, not for Babylon, but for their loss of profit.  How do you feel about material things?  The Scripture says that grass withers, and flowers fade; well, portfolios can blow up in your face.

Rejoicing Because of the Judgment on Babylon

1. VINDICATING RECOMPENSE

Rejoice over her fate, O heaven and people of God and apostles and prophets! For at last God has judged her for your sakes.  Revelation 18:20

An interesting aspect of the word rejoice is that it is a compound word that literally says good middle.  It’s as if the angel is instructing all of heaven to have a good belly laugh over the fate of Babylon.  It certainly doesn't sound like pray for your enemies, does it?  However, this simply recognizes the holy character of God.  He does exact vengeance on those who oppose him, and hurt His children.  God will never allow His name to be dragged down.

I will rescue you for my sake—yes, for my own sake!  I will not let my reputation be tarnished, and I will not share my glory with idols!  Isaiah 48:11

We serve a God who is high and holy.  He will vindicate His name.

2. VIOLENT RECOMPENSE

Then a mighty angel picked up a boulder the size of a huge millstone.  He threw it into the ocean and shouted, “Just like this, the great city Babylon will be thrown down with violence and will never be found again.  Revelation 18:21

What a picture.  Babylon is picked up like one of the millstones that were used to grind out its great wealth, and unceremoniously dumped in the sea.  It is a violent act of vengeance.  It is (as Jonathan Edwards preached) a terrible thing to be Sinners In the Hands of an Angry God!

3. VAST RECOMPENSE

The sound of harps, singers, flutes, and trumpets will never be heard in you again.  No craftsmen and no trades will ever be found in you again.  The sound of the mill will never be heard in you again.  The light of a lamp will never shine in you again.  The happy voices of brides and grooms will never be heard in you again.  For your merchants were the greatest in the world, and you deceived the nations with your sorceries.  Revelation 18:22-23

No more, no more, no more; what a desolate ring!  We imagine the return of Christ and Armageddon to be noisy with battle.  Have you ever stood at a battlefield the morning after?  No more is an appropriate description.  There is a deafening no more breath, no more cries, no more life.  No more!  In this passage I find poetic justice, and fulfillment of God’s judgment, that today Babylon is a barren place, where lights don’t shine, music is silent, and business is nowhere to be found.  Sadaam Hussein was forbidden by God to rebuild Babylon and be the new Nebuchadnezzar!  The place is a desolate ruin.  One commentator describes it in words of acute and painful reality:

One has the picture in this chapter of a grieving John walking among the now silent wasteland of human arrogance.  Everything has collapsed in the crashing sounds of Revelation chapter 18.  The lamps are out, voices are silent, the flutes and minstrels are no longer playing.  The scene is stark and hopeless.  The city was powerful, rich, and cruel, and now it has all come to this.

This is how the world ends, this is how the world ends, this is how the world ends, not with a bang but a whimper.[2]

4. VIRTUOUS RECOMPENSE

In your streets flowed the blood of the prophets and of God’s holy people
and the blood of people slaughtered all over the world.”  Revelation 18:24

The judgment of God is righteous.  No person will be able to stand in that day, and say, I didn't know.  In any case, it is a good thing that vengeance is a business for God…alone!  Only He can separate the tragedy of lost souls and judgment.  It is enough for us to be sinners in the hands of a loving, forgiving God, who has loved us for Christ's sake.

How, Then, Shall We Live?

In this hostile world we should live each day as citizens of Heaven, and not of Babylon.  History, our hearts, and the Scriptures tell us that this world is passing away.

Edward Gibbon's Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, written in 1788, could have come off the presses this morning.  In it he gives five basic reasons why Rome, and other great civilizations withered and passed from the scene,

1. The undermining of the dignity and sanctity of the home, which is the                          basis for human society.

2. Higher and higher taxes; the spending of public money for free bread and                 circuses for the populace.

3. The mad craze for pleasure; sports becoming every year more exciting,                                more brutal, more immoral.

4. The building of great armaments when the real enemy was within -- the                                     decay of individual responsibility.

5. The decay of religion; faith fading into mere form, losing touch with life,                   losing power to guide the people.[3]

This world is indeed hostile to the person who would live truly in a Christ-pleasing way.  But that's OK; it was hostile to the Master as well.  You, dear saint, are in good company.

And you are not home yet.  Keep living as a traveler; you're only passing through this hostile territory!

In the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, Amen!
